Boy's sentence for killing 80-year-old Bhim Kohli to be reviewed

Glasgow Times04-07-2025
Bhim Kohli called out for help when he was attacked in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, near Leicester, on September 1 last year.
He died the next day with a spinal cord injury and fractured ribs.
Last month, Mr Justice Turner sentenced a boy, aged 15, who punched and kicked Mr Kohli, to seven years in custody, and a 13-year-old girl, who encouraged the attack by filming parts of it while laughing, to a three-year youth rehabilitation order.
Both children, who cannot be named because of their age, denied their crimes but were convicted by a jury at Leicester Crown Court.
A spokesperson for the Attorney General's Office said the case will be reviewed under the unduly lenient sentence scheme.
The spokesperson said in a statement: 'The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby KC MP, was appalled by this violent, cowardly attack on an innocent man.
'She wishes to express her deepest sympathies to Bhim Kohli's friends and family at this difficult time.
'After undertaking a detailed review of the case, the Solicitor General concluded the sentence of the 15-year-old boy could be referred to the Court of Appeal.
'The court will determine if the sentence is increased or not.'
Mr Kohli's daughter spoke of feeling 'angry and disappointed', adding that she believes their sentences do not 'reflect the severity of the crime they committed'.
In a statement after the sentencing hearing, Susan Kohli said: 'When they are released, they still have their full lives ahead of them. They can rebuild their lives. We can't.'
Mid Leicestershire MP Peter Bedford and the MP for South Leicestershire, Alberto Costa, wrote to the AGO last month asking for the sentences to be reviewed.
It is understood the sentence of the 13-year-old girl will not be referred to the Court of Appeal as the threshold had not been met.
A six-week trial heard that Mr Kohli's children found him lying on the ground in agony when he told his daughter that he had been called a 'P***' during the attack.
The boy said in his evidence he had a 'tussle' with Mr Kohli over his slider shoe before he slapped the elderly man with it out of 'instinct', which caused the pensioner to fall to his knees, but denied kicking or punching him.
In a letter written by the boy to a woman who had worked with him at the residential unit where he was being looked after, he wrote: 'I f****** hate what I did. I regret it so much.
'I have flashbacks of that day and it just upsets me. I kinda just needed anger etc releasing.'
The girl had filmed a series of video clips in which the elderly man was hit with the shoe by the balaclava-clad boy and another where Mr Kohli lay motionless on the ground.
She was heard laughing in the video clips which she kept in a passcode protected Snapchat folder.
In his sentencing remarks last month, Mr Justice Turner said: 'I am sure Mr Kohli did nothing at all to deserve what you did. What you did was wicked.
'You made a cowardly and violent attack on an elderly man.'

Killer of Claire Knights has jail sentence increased

A pub chef who murdered a woman while she walked her dog will spend nearly six more years in prison after Court of Appeal judges increased his sentence. Harrison Lawrence Van-Pooss was jailed for life with a minimum term of 25-and-a-half years in February for killing Claire Knights, 54, in Kent almost two years ago. He ambushed her as she walked back from a beach near Minnis Bay, sexually assaulted and then murdered her before hiding her body in a dyke. The 21-year-old then 'feigned' symptoms of psychosis following his arrest, the Court of Appeal was told on Friday. His sentence was referred by the Solicitor General for being unduly lenient, with Lord Justice Edis, Mr Justice Calver and Judge Angela Morris increasing Van-Pooss' minimum term to one of 31 years Jonathan Polnay KC, for the SG, said the judge at Canterbury Crown Court did not give enough weight to how Ms Knights had been targeted as a lone woman, the extreme nature of the violence and that her body had been hidden for two days before it was discovered. He also said the judge gave too much credit for Van-Pooss's guilty plea and his sentence therefore 'required an uplift of substance'. Stephen Moses KC, for Van-Pooss, said the targeting was 'a matter of moments rather than pre-meditated'. Van-Pooss also pleaded guilty to upskirting another woman at the pub where he worked the day before he killed Ms Knights. After she reported this, Van-Pooss was dismissed on August 22 2023, and he left, carrying a backpack with a chef's knife inside. He then built a 'den' by the railway lines near Minnis Bay, Lord Justice Edis said in his judgment. Ms Knights was believed to have been walking a white and brown spaniel called Zebulon when she ran into Van-Pooss the following day. Van-Pooss acted in a 'simple' and 'calculated' way, the judge added, as he beat her and stomped on her head, causing fractures and brain damage. Ms Knights was found concealed in a dyke, having been pushed into the water while she was still alive. Van-Pooss was arrested for the upskirting offence on the evening of the killing, and was later charged with murder. Lord Justice Edis said the killing of a lone woman created 'widespread concern in the local community' and that Van-Pooss received an unduly lenient sentence. He said: 'We consider that the judge, in approaching this difficult task, did fall into error because even having regard to double counting, the aggravating factors did outweigh the mitigating factors.' Solicitor General Lucy Rigby said: 'Lawrence Van-Pooss's attack on Claire Knights was horrific. He assaulted and brutally murdered her, in a totally random attack. 'I welcome the court's decision to increase Van-Pooss's sentence and I would like to express my deepest sympathies to Claire's family and loved ones.'

School staff member and RAF Air Cadet instructor unmasked as 'predator'

A former RAF Air Cadet instructor and Anglesey school worker who abused two boys has been jailed for four years. Jonathan Evans was jailed at Caernarfon Crown Court today for a string of sexual offences. The court heard Evans, of Breeze Hill, Malltraeth, Anglesey, "cupped his hands" over one victim's genitals. The judge Her Honour Nicola Jones noted the victim initially thought it was "banter" but later realised it was "abuse". You can sign up for all the latest court stories here Evans also sent explicit photos of himself on Snapchat to another victim and repeatedly asked for naked images of them. In a statement, the first victim said he had suffered "emotional stress". The abuse had affected him "mentally, emotionally, socially and professionally". Anna Price, defending, said there had been an "abuse of trust" and also a "degree of immaturity". It was the first time Evans had been before a court and it will be his first experience of custody. The case has been an "incredibly upsetting experience" for his parents who will support him throughout his sentence. Ms Price said after it is served: "He will have their support to help him to rebuild his life." She pointed out there had been a "delay" in the case. Matters were reported to the police in 2020 and he wasn't charged until 2024. The defendant has been under stress and has had "repeated contact with police to find out what's going on". She added: "He has been suspended from work and not able to find a job until February this year. His life has effectively been in limbo." The judge said there had been grooming with offences committed against several victims at different locations over several years. Evans was convicted of nine offences - three counts of sexual assault on a male, two counts of causing or inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity, two counts of sexual activity with a boy, and two counts of an adult abusing a position of trust. She jailed Evans for four years with the other sentences to run concurrently. Today police branded Evans a "manipulative predator". Detective Constable Richard Dwyfor Clark said the defendant had "committed serious sexual offences". He said: 'At the centre of this case are a group of young people and their families. I would like to thank them for the dignity and determination they have shown in bringing him to justice today. 'Evans was a selfish, manipulative predator who cynically abused his position of trust to exploit and harm children. 'I would also like to thank the prosecution legal team, Court and the CPS for their work in this case, as well as the Air Cadets and school who have supported this investigation throughout. 'If you suspect someone is being sexually abused, or if you have experienced abuse yourself, please contact North Wales Police. We will take your report seriously and support you.'
