Rutgers football safety Jett Elad has won a preliminary injunction that will grant him eligibility for the 2025 season, according to a decision released by United States District Judge Zahid N. Quraishi on Friday.
Elad, who transferred to Rutgers from UNLV, filed a lawsuit against the NCAA hoping to block the institution from enforcing its five-year rule, which allows for four competitive seasons in a five-year timeframe.
Elad and Rutgers argued that Elad's year at Garden City Community College in 2022 should not count toward his eligibility.
This will be Elad's seventh season of college football.
He previously spent three years at Ohio University before his JUCO year – he redshirted in 2019 and 2020, which didn't count toward his eligibility after the NCAA issued a waiver to all athletes because of the pandemic.
Much of the reason for Elad's argument stemmed from the ruling the NCAA made on Diego Pavia, the Vanderbilt quarterback who won an NCAA injunction before last season after he argued his JUCO year shouldn't count toward his eligibility clock.
In December, the NCAA announced that athletes would be eligible for 2025-26 if they competed at a 'non-NCAA school for one or two years' previously and would have exhausted their eligibility following the 2024-25 year.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano testified in Elad's case.
The court's decision is a major win for the Scarlet Knights, who will have one of their top impact transfers available next season.

We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. One of the things Myron Metcalf and Jeff Borzello touched on was ten teams that "could make a jump" this coming season. And, if you are an Ohio State fan, then you have to like what the ESPN duo things of the Buckeyes this season because they were named as one of those ten teams. OSU was able to retain some key pieces of its core group, but outside of that, there's been a major overhaul of the guys suiting up in the scarlet and gray this season. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Here's to hoping ESPN is right and that the Buckeyes make it back to meaningful games late and on into the postseason this basketball season. Son of former Tennessee basketball coach offered by Vols
Tennessee men's basketball is recruiting a prospect for its 2026 signing class and made his first big cut. Four-star small forward Bo Ogden announced Tennessee was among his top six schools, along with Gonzaga, Purdue, Texas, Kansas and Virginia, according to Joe Tipton of On3. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Ogden is a standout at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 18 small forward in the class and the No. 5 player in Texas. Ogden is a legacy prospect for Tennessee coach Rick Barnes. His father, Chris Ogden, played for Barnes at Texas from 1999-2003 and coached on his first staff at Tennessee during the 2015-16 season. He serves as general manager for Texas basketball. Tennessee offered Bo Ogden a scholarship on July 21, 2024. He has not visited the Vols. ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has issued a "warning" to the rest of the college football world. Herbstreit, a top analyst for ESPN, believes that locker rooms could collapse if something isn't done about the future of college football. Too many players are transferring, too many players are making decisions based on strictly money and too many programs are seeing a ton of turnover every year. The ESPN college football analyst believes that at some point, locker rooms could collapse, if something isn't done to stabilize the sport moving forward. He's probably not wrong about that, either. Many college football coaches seem to agree with Herbstreit, too. 'I hate to say, I don't have faith because you have to have faith for anything to work. So, I have a lot of faith going in, but I'll let you know in a year. You know, the NCAA couldn't control it in the past. There's no control right now. So it's got to be better than nothing, right?' Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi said. Many head coaches are just pushing for more consistency across the sport when it comes to controlling what's happening. Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert is part of that group, too. 'We've got to decide if we want Major League Baseball or if we want the NFL. Major League Baseball has some teams with $250 million [payrolls] and some teams playing Moneyball at $40 million,' Dickert said. 'Or do we want a hard salary cap like the NFL, and who's doing the best with their resources? You know, the NFL doesn't have GoFundMe for free agents, right? They don't; they play with a certain set of rules.' College football is working on solutions, following the NCAA vs. House settlement, but time will tell if it's enough.
