Pune: The state Chief Electoral Office (CEO) has cancelled the current scheduled inspection of EVM-VVPAT machines for NCP (SP) candidate Prashant Jagtap from the Hadapsar Assembly constituency, citing a pending petition by him before Bombay High Court.
The verification process, originally scheduled from July 25 to August 2, involved an inspection of 27 EVMs, as appealed by Jagtap. However, the CEO office, in a letter to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), stated that the process cannot proceed as Jagtap's petition is pending for hearing in the court.
The letter refers to a fresh application filed by Jagtap before the high court on July 8, seeking restoration of his earlier petition.
"Since the petition is pending, the inspection and verification of the burnt memory and microcontroller of EVMs stands cancelled for these dates," the communication from the CEO office said. It stated that the petitioner, too, requested for stopping the process of scheduled verification due to the pending petition.

"The verification process for the Hadapsar candidate will not take place. However, the schedule will go ahead for NCP (SP) candidate Sachin Ghodke from Khadakwasla," he said. The collector had sought guidance on the issue from the CEO office.
Jagtap told TOI he received an official intimation regarding his application being put on hold for now due to the petition before the court. "I have been informed that due to the pending status of my petition in the high court, the verification cannot be conducted at this stage.
Once the matter is disposed of, I will seek verification again," he said.
The election petition filed by Jagtap was initially dismissed by the Bombay High Court on January 31. However, he subsequently filed a restoration application, and the court restored the petition through its order dated March 25. As the petitioner failed to comply with the directions outlined in that order, the high court dismissed the petition again on June 11.
Following this second dismissal, the counsel for the Election Commission of India (ECI) informed the authorities that the EVM-VVPAT machines involved in the case could be released. Subsequently, the ECI issued a letter on June 25, directing that the pending election verification activity be carried out.
Accordingly, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which is tasked with EVM maintenance and verification, was informed on July 7 to prepare a schedule.
BEL responded on July 12, appointing engineers and finalising the verification process to begin from July 25.
However, on July 8, Jagtap filed a fresh application seeking restoration of the election petition, which is currently pending before the high court. On July 22, he submitted a request to halt the verification process in light of the pending plea.
Taking cognisance of the new developments, the under secretary and deputy chief electoral officer wrote to BEL, instructing them to cancel the scheduled inspection and verification of the EVMs and VVPATs, specifically the "burnt memory" of the machines related to the Hadapsar Assembly segment.
Officials said any further action on the verification will depend on the outcome of the latest petition pending before the high court.

Maha govt mute spectator to rising crime, Rs 4,900 cr freebie scam: Sule
NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Mahayuti government for failing to address the rising crime rate in Maharashtra, accusing it of being a mute spectator as miscreants had no fear of the law. Speaking to reporters here, the Baramati MP claimed that a Rs 4,900 crore scam had taken place in the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yogana, the government's flagship scheme that provides a monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to women. She said parts of the state, including Pune and Beed districts, have witnessed a steady surge in crimes, while the government remains a mute spectator. "People have lost faith in the system. There is no fear of the law. Who is backing these criminals? Instead of looking into these questions, the government chooses to stay silent," she said. Sule criticised the delay in the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the 2022 murder of Parli-based businessman Mahadev Munde. "Only after Munde's wife, Dnyaneshwari, attempted self-immolation and met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, did the government act. We demand a fair and transparent probe by the SIT," she said. Sule also raised concerns about the recent communal unrest at Yavat in Daund tehsil, where groups of persons, angered by a social media post, vandalised and set ablaze properties. "This is a sensitive region. Political leaders and outsiders coming in and inciting unrest is unacceptable. I urge the chief minister and deputy chief ministers to control their people," she said. Sule urged Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, also the guardian minister of Pune, to ensure peace and communal harmony in Daund. "We have deep roots in Daund. Let's not allow outsiders to disturb its social fabric," she said. Maharashtra has become an example of how power and money can derail governance, she claimed. "There is a Rs 4,900-crore scam in the Ladki Bahin scheme. Farmers are committing suicide, and yet the government is focused on self-promotion," she alleged. Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare recently admitted that nearly 26.34 lakh ineligible persons, including men, were availing benefits of the Ladki Bahin scheme. On Fadnavis's recent remarks about rising hooliganism in Pune, Sule said, "If you acknowledge there's a law and order issue, what action have you taken? Who is protecting these contractors and gangsters?" She also flagged irregularities in the Election Commission's handling of voter rolls in Bihar, demanding a detailed discussion in the Parliament on electoral transparency and accountability.

No H1-B visas, just leave the country after you get a degree: Steve Bannon's explosive comment on foreign students
Steve Bannon said foreign students should be forced to leave US after they complete their studies. President Donald Trump's aide and former adviser Steve Bannon made an explosive remark on foreign students in the country and the H-1B visa programs, calling for a complete purge of international students. "I don't think you should have any foreign students in the country right now," Bannon said, adding that this is elbowing out American students. Calling the situation uncontrollable, Bannon said instead of stapling a green card to their diploma, the administration should staple an exit visa. "Boom, you are out of here. You get 30 days to hang out with classmates, you can come back for all the alumni stuff, but you are gone," Bannon said. The Trump adviser said absorbing all talent from all across the world is not going to make the world a better place. "The countries of the world won't get better if you're sucking up every piece of talent. That's how the British ran their empire. It's imperial," Bannon said. Bannon said if everyone wants to come to Harvard and they can't do that, they will come through central America and the US will remain in the same mess that it's trying to clear now. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Biggest Real Estate Discounts Ever a M3M India.
