Moritz Wagner set to return to Magic on one-year deal
Wagner, the brother of Magic forward Franz Wagner, will sign a contract worth US$5-million, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal likely will not be finalized until the league's offseason moratorium on moves is lifted Sunday.
Free agency officially started Monday and most deals that have been agreed to since then — along with some trades from last month, including the one that will bring Kevin Durant to Houston from Phoenix — can begin getting final approval from the league at that time as well.
There are several notable free agents still available. Among them:
— Injured guard Damian Lillard, who is available after the surprise waive-and-stretch move by Milwaukee that allowed the Bucks to agree to terms with former Indiana forward Myles Turner. Lillard isn't expected to play much, if at all, this season because he still needs at least several months to recover from an Achilles tendon tear suffered in the playoffs.
— Veteran center Al Horford, who helped Boston win the 2024 NBA title and is 62 games away from reaching 1,200 for his career.
— Point guard Russell Westbrook, who is set to enter his 18th year in the league and someone who averaged 13.3 points per game with Denver this past season.
— Point guard Chris Paul, who turned 40 in May and would be playing a 21st season in the league. He's coming off a year when he started all 82 games for San Antonio.
— There's also the question surrounding Golden State restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, who has been mentioned frequently in potential sign-and-trades that could send him to a new club.
Moritz Wagner tore his ACL in a game in December and has hopes of being ready for the start of this coming season. The Magic earlier declined an option to bring him back on a deal that would have paid US$11-million this year, and the backup center wound up taking less money to remain in Orlando — a team with serious hopes of contending in the Eastern Conference.
The Magic added Desmond Bane in a trade with Memphis last month, landed guard Tyus Jones earlier in free agency and are expected to give Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 pick in the 2022 draft, an extension this summer — one that likely will be in the range of nearly US$240-million for five years and would represent the biggest contract in franchise history.
Moritz Wagner was averaging a career-best 12.9 points through 30 games last season when he got hurt. He played for Germany's team that won the 2023 Basketball World Cup and was with his national team again for the Paris Olympics in 2024.
He is entering his eighth NBA season and what will be his fifth full year with the Magic.

The NHL brought more success, as he skated in 863 regular-season and playoff games since debuting in the league in 2013, putting up 498 points. Johnson was part of the Lightning's core when they reached the final in 2015 and helped them hoist the Cup back to back in 2020 and '21. Johnson finished with Chicago, playing three seasons with the Blackhawks, and Boston, signing with the Bruins early last season following his training camp tryout. Magic and Paolo Banchero agree on a 5-year extension. Total value could reach $287 million
Paolo Banchero has checked a lot of boxes since joining the Orlando Magic. Won rookie of the year, been an All-Star, helped the team to the playoffs twice. And now, the Magic are betting on there being more — much more. Banchero has agreed to the richest contract in Magic history, a five-year extension that is worth $239 million and could reach about $287 million should he become eligible for a supermax deal, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Monday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing had not been announced by either Banchero or the Magic. ESPN, which first reported the agreement, said it also included a player option for the final year. The agreement means the Magic have four players — Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and the newly acquired Desmond Bane — under contract for the next four seasons. And in the cases of Banchero, Wagner and Suggs, the terms extend out at least five seasons. Banchero was the rookie of the year in 2022-23, living up to his billing after being the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He was an All-Star in his second season and was well on his way to that again last season before an early-season oblique injury. Meyers, Riders return from bye week as CFL's only remaining unbeaten team
And then there was one. Receiver Dohnte Meyers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders returned from their bye week Monday as the CFL's lone undefeated team. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-1) fell from the ranks of the unbeaten last week with a 37-16 loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Saskatchewan (4-0) doesn't have the luxury of easing back into its season. It hosts Calgary (3-1) on Thursday night. 'It's always focus once you step into the building for a work week, especially when it's a West opponent,' Meyers said. 'Whoever we line up against we've got to let them know it's Riders football that they're playing.' The five-foot-11, 186-pound Meyers has emerged as a starter this season, his second with Saskatchewan. He has 15 catches for 208 yards and team-high two touchdowns. And he's shown versatility, opening 2025 at wide receiver before being shifted to slotback for Saskatchewan's last two contests with injuries to Samuel Emilus and Kian Schaffer-Baker. Meyers has no concerns about the Riders struggling to reclaim their mojo after a week off. 'I feel like we have a lot of veterans on our team — from the coaching staff to players — who've been on championship teams,' he said. 'This isn't their first rodeo. 'They have a lot of years and experience so they understand what it takes to be a professional and the frame of mind and competition level that need to be going on in practice.' Meyers had 24 receptions for 349 yards and a TD last season over four contests. Meyers' rise with Saskatchewan has been a patient one. He signed with the Riders in October 2023 and began last season on the practice roster before being added to the active roster for the club's 22-22 tie with Ottawa on Aug. 8. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native, who turned 25 on Sunday, had eight catches for 101 yards in that contest, his CFL debut. 'That (four games in '24) was pivotal for me, especially as a professional athlete and younger player,' he said. 'Although you practise all year long, game experience is when the bullets are live and there's nothing quite like it. 'Although I got hurt, I was able to build off all of those experiences coming into this year. It allowed me to have a clearer focus in the off-season regarding what to expect and get ready for while having something in my game to critique. It allows you to hit this year with a full head of steam, get back stronger and be a better version of yourself.' The '24 season also allowed Meyers to immerse himself into Canadian football. 'The waggle, spacing, the time clock and time management are all things you've got to get acclimated to,' he said. 'You just get more used to it and I kind of felt that sense of being more settled coming in. 'The waggle was something I focused on this off-season, same with playing on the wider field and spacing. 'There are no plays off in this offence because we (receivers) are involved in the running game,' Meyers said. 'The thing with A.J. is he's so explosive, it can be an inside run that breaks outside and back inside and A.J. could jump over somebody, it's crazy. 'That's what makes things so deadly. We've got Trevor back there, we have A.J. and there's so many other guys who're explosive that you just don't know what can happen on any given play.'
