MMDA, Makati suspend number coding scheme due to Habagat

GMA Network16 hours ago
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday announced that the number coding scheme will remain suspended in the capital region on Wednesday, July 23 due to the inclement weather.
'The agency continues to remind road users to be careful when driving and wading through floodwaters, if unavoidable,' the advisory read in Filipino.
Meanwhile, Makati City also announced the suspension of the number coding scheme within the city on Wednesday.
'Mayor Ate Nancy Binay reminds people to be careful when driving in heavy rain, if they must leave the house,' the announcement in Filipino read.
Makati residents who need an emergency response may call 168, it added.
Further, work in government offices and classes at all levels in Metro Manila are still suspended on Wednesday due to the continuous heavy rainfall brought by the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the Malacanang said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

DILG's Remulla says sorry for humorous class, work suspension announcements

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla on Wednesday apologized for the humorous posts of his department for the announcement of class and work suspensions due to the bad weather. Remulla told GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita in an interview that he was not downplaying the struggle of the public and that he was just trying to lighten their mood. 'Siguro hindi nila ako naiintindihan. Pabiro talaga ako. Hindi ko naman minamaliit ang pinaghihirapan nila. Ang ginagawa ko lang, ang pagpapaalala ay ginawa kong mas magaan para hindi negative vibes lagi ang naririnig,' Remula said. (Maybe they just don't understand me. I am really humorous. I am not downplaying what they are going through. All I am doing is reminding them. I made it lighter so that they don't always hear negative vibes.) 'Kung 'di naman nila naiintindihan ay humihingi ako ng pasensiya. Pero ganoon talaga pagkatao ko. Ano na lang, intindihin na lang ito na wala naman akong masamang intensiyon,' he added. (If they don't understand, I apologize. But that is just how I am. Just understand that I don't have any bad intentions.) In a post on DILG's Facebook account on Tuesday, Remulla said, "Mga abangers, may inaabangan ba kayo? Mamaya na kain muna ko." (Guys, are you waiting for something? Later, I have to eat first.) Then, the DILG again published a post with Remulla saying, 'Mga abangers, sarap ng bogchi ko. Sa kabusugan ay nakaidlip nang sandali. Oh eto na inaabangan niyo!' (Guys, I had a delicious meal. I fell asleep for a while after being full. Oh, this is what you've been waiting for!) Remulla was referring to the announcement of class and work suspensions due to the impact of the bad weather caused by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat). The post received mostly angry reactions. Twelve people were reported dead due to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Crising and the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday. Five of the fatalities were recorded in Calabarzon. Negros Island Region had three fatalities. One fatality each meanwhile was reported in Metro Manila, Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARRM). The victims died due to drowning and falling trees. Nine people were also reported missing and seven others were reported injured. The information from the PNP is up for validation by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). —KG, GMA Integrated News

Community pantry organizer heartened by bayanihan amid relief ops

The organizer of Community Pantry PH, which conducted relief ops amid the heavy rains and floods this week, took to social media to express her gratitude for volunteers. Patricia "Patreng" Non shared photos of people getting together to pack and serve food despite the stormy weather. 'Tuwing may ganap ang Community Pantry PH relief ops man o hindi lagi pa din ako nagugulat kung gaano kagaling, kababait at mapagbigay ng mga tao,' she said. Patreng said that she is not romanticizing calamities and the pandemic, but it is during times like these that show 'kung paano natin nae-empower ang isa't isa at kung paano natin nire-reclaim ang rights natin tulad ng safe na space at pagkain gaano man kahirap ang sitwasyon.' 'Babangon at kikilos ang mga tao para sa isa't isa.' She added the volunteers and kitchen organizers are not in politics but are always willing to serve. 'Sana eventually makuha na din natin yung mga tamang serbisyo para sa atin so we can do so much more for ourselves, our family at sa ating community,' she said. 'Yakap! Maraming salamat sa lahat ng kitchen organizers!' On Tuesday, Patreng said that relief operations are underway, with the goal of bringing food to the people affected by the floods in Metro Manila and nearby areas. By afternoon, there were already 101 community kitchens. Patreng Non is one of the organizers of the Maginhawa Community pantry that was set up to provide people with free food during the COVID-19 pandemic and was replicated in many areas. According to PAGASA's morning bulletin on Wednesday, Tropical Depression Dante maintains its strength as it moves northwestward over the Philippine Sea. The Southwest Monsoon or Habagat is forecast to continue bringing moderate to sometimes intense rains over Metro Manila and several provinces. —Nika Roque/JCB, GMA Integrated News
