Celebrate Juneteenth by streaming this must-see Netflix drama with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes

From "Miss Congeniality" to "Little Miss Sunshine" to "Drop Dead Gorgeous", the competitive world of beauty pageants has been explored numerous times on film, but one of the best is "Miss Juneteenth," a Southern drama that sees a former beauty queen and single mom prepare her rebellious teenage daughter for a local pageant in Texas.
But where other movies have focused on the silliness and superficiality of the pageant circuit, the 2020 title — which was written and directed by Channing Godfrey Peoples ("Queen Sugar") in her feature film directorial debut — is a thought-provoking, character-driven watch that digs into hefty topics, from racism to motherhood to the meaning of freedom, all guided by two great lead performances by Nicole Beharie and Alexis Chikaeze.
"Miss Juneteenth" is available to stream on Netflix, as part of the streaming service's ever-changing selection of movies and TV shows. And here's why you should celebrate Juneteenth with this moving drama.
In "Miss Juneteenth", Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a single mother in a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas. She is the former winner of the local Miss Juneteenth pageant, which offers a full scholarship to a historically black college.
However, her own education was derailed by the birth of her now 15-year-old daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze), which forced Turquoise to drop out of college and for a time to work as a stripper.
Seeking a better life for her daughter, Turquoise enters Kai into the same Miss Juneteenth contest, despite the teen girl's lack of enthusiasm for the pageant life and her own personal passions to pursue dance. Mother and daughter simultaneously butt heads but also get closer as they navigate deferred dreams and differing aspirations in this heartfelt multigeneration tale.
Along with offering up one of the most believable mother-daughter relationships on screen in recent years, "Miss Juneteenth" paints a vivid, authentic picture of Black life in Fort Worth, Texas. Writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples personally drew upon her own hometown, her childhood and her life experiences to create the character of Turquoise.

The drama currently has a near-perfect 99% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site's critical consensus reading: "Like a pageant winner walking across the stage, 'Miss Juneteenth' follows a familiar path – but does so with charm and grace."
Nicole Beharie received a Gotham Award for Best Actress and David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter praised the star for the "natural luminosity" and "radiant warmth" she brings to her scenes
Writing for The New York Times, Lovia Gyarkye highlighted film's thoughtful handling of its various themes, "from the significance of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, to the legacy of racism in predatory bank lending practices. But what's most impressive is the amount of space Peoples's black female characters inhabit in the narrative."
This Juneteenth, let the film be a powerful reminder of both the struggles and the enduring spirit of freedom.

This Allison Janney comedy is an underrated Netflix show to watch this weekend (July 25-27)

When Netflix's streaming service first launched, it fundamentally changed what television was. In the years since, the streaming service has become the home to so many shows that I find it impossible to keep track. What shows are worth watching, which ones aren't, and how long will they remain relevant? This week, we've pulled together three great, deeply underrated shows that are well worth your time, each for very different reasons. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new shows to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, the best shows on HBO Max, and the best shows on Disney+. Building the Band (2025-) One of the smartest reality competition series to air on Netflix, Building the Band follows musicians who, as contestants, receive the chance to form bands of their own, auditioning one another. As the bands begin to solidify, they discover just how difficult it is to meld musical styles, personalities, and performance types. The show has celebrity panels who help and advise, but Building the Band turns an almost radical amount of power over to its contestants, and you'll ultimately find yourself deeply invested in the bands that they form. You can watch Building the Band on Netflix. Mom (2013-2021) It never had the ratings of The Big Bang Theory, but Mom was arguably the superior CBS sitcom. What was most surprising about Mom was the way the series managed to meld its most serious ideas with genuine comedy. The series follows a struggling single mother who is also a recovering alcoholic as her mom, another recovering alcoholic, waltzes back into her life. Mom took addiction seriously, and Anna Faris and Allison Janney were both up to the task of playing complex characters. Without fail, Mom was also deeply funny, and that's why it works. You can watch Mom on Netflix. House of Lies (2012-2016) Although it was never the most popular prestige comedy of its era, House of Lies was nonetheless a dark and funny series with an all-star cast. The show follows a group of consultants who are deeply clever and convince corporations of all kinds to pay for services from them that they almost definitely don't need. Led by Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell, this ensemble comedy was a little bit of a precursor to shows like Succession, although the characters on this show aren't quite that wealthy. Unfortunately, though, they might be just as depraved, and that's what makes them so entertaining. You can watch House of Lies on Netflix.

The Matrix is now streaming for free. Find out how to stream great movies (July 25-27)

Streaming has undoubtedly changed how we watch movies. While nothing can replace the theatrical experience, the pros of streaming ultimately outweigh the cons. That being said, the prices are getting out of control. Offset those costs by downloading FAST services, free apps that offer thousands of movies at no cost to the consumer. If you believe the quality of movies on FAST services is poor, think again. The Matrix, one of the most influential movies of the last 30 years, is streaming for free. The hits don't stop there. Learn how to stream The Matrix and two other films below. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. The Matrix (1999) Trying to explain the importance of The Matrix in two paragraphs is borderline impossible, so I'll give you the Cliff's Notes. Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix explores a dystopian future where humanity becomes trapped inside a simulated reality controlled by machines. Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves), better known as the hacker Neo, is recruited by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) to join his band of rebels in the fight to free humans from the Matrix. Morpheus believes Neo is 'the One,' humanity's messiah who will destroy the sentient agents trying to keep people from escaping the Matrix. Many of The Matrix's elements — fight choreography, slow motion, wire fu techniques, and philosophical themes — inspired an entire generation of movies. Without The Matrix, most of your favorite action and sci-fi movies in the 21st century would not exist. Stream The Matrix on Pluto TV. The Wedding Singer (1998) If Happy Gilmore 2 becomes a hit, perhaps Netflix would want to explore another sequel to another Adam Sandler '90s movie, The Wedding Singer. Before 1998, Sandler was best known for his juvenile and immature humor. The Wedding Singer displayed Sandler's softer side, proving something that many of us have known for years — the Sandman is one of Hollywood's most versatile actors. The kind-hearted Robbie Hart (Sandler) is left at the altar on his wedding day. To make matters worse, Robbie works as a wedding singer, meaning he's constantly surrounded by love and happiness, two things he has yet to find. The only thing snapping him out of his depression is Julia (Drew Barrymore), a cheerful waitress who asks Robbie to help plan her wedding. As the two bond over wedding plans, Robbie realizes he loves Julia and wants to be the one to marry her. Grow Old With You is a Hall of Fame Sandler song. Stream The Wedding Singer on Tubi. The Worst Person in the World (2021) Do not take the title, The Worst Person in the World, at face value. Renate Reinsve's Julie might believe she's a bad person, but in actuality, she's confused about her life and afraid of the future. It's a normal feeling for anyone in Julie's shoes, an unmarried twentysomething transitioning into her 30s. Divided into 12 chapters, a prologue, and an epilogue, The Worst Person in the World explores Julie's romantic life, including her relationships with a comic artist (Anders Danielsen Lie) and a barista (Herbert Nordrum). The spectacular Reinsve injects passion, charisma, and depth into her character while subverting our expectations in a familiar genre. Reinsve and director Joachim Trier will reunite later this year in the Oscar favorite Sentimental Value. Stream The Worst Person in the World on Tubi.

Kevin Costner's ambitious Western is underrated — watch it now on HBO Max (July 25-27)

Several of Warner Bros.' biggest releases of 2025 are streaming on HBO Max. A Minecraft Movie, the third-highest-grossing movie of 2025, and Sinners, Ryan Coogler's critically acclaimed vampiric horror, are occupying the first two spots in the top 10. Beyond the top 10, there are a plethora of underrated movies worthy of your time. Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is much better than the mixed reviews it received at the time of its release. This weekend, give Horizon and these two underrated movies a shot. Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on HBO Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary (2024) Christopher Cross. Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins. Steely Dan. Toto. These five musicians and bands helped pioneer a genre of music that became known as yacht rock. Developed in the late '70s and early '80s, yacht rock is a West Coast sound that infused soulful vocals with easy-listening lyrics. Yacht rock is a combination of soft pop, jazz, R&B, and funk. Yacht rock's popularity exploded in the mid-1980s, but by the end of the decade, it began to lose its stranglehold on pop culture. That's when an unlikely ally — hip hop artists — began sampling yacht rock beats in their songs, which led to a resurgence in the genre. Yacht Rock: A Documentary is an informative exploration into a genre that deserves much more credit for its significant impact on the music industry. Stream Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary on HBO Max. Blue Beetle (2023) Blue Beetle was one of DC's casualties in 2023. James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios, clearly wanted the 2023 slate — Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 — to disappear and make way for the new DC Universe. That being said, Blue Beetle displayed the most potential, which is probably why an animated series was greenlit. Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes, a recent college graduate who becomes the Blue Beetle after fusing with the Scarab. The Scarab encases Jamie in an armored exoskeleton with superpowers, including flight, strength, and agility. Despite his initial hesitation, Jamie comes to accept his newfound abilities and embraces his new calling. On its surface, Blue Beetle is a superhero adventure, but the movie works best as a grounded family drama thanks to its terrific cast. Stream Blue Beetle on HBO Max. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024) Kevin Costner has become the butt of a lot of jokes for Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. Costner personally funded $38 million of the $100 million budget shared by the first two films. His ambition may have gotten the better of him, considering Chapter 1 flopped at the box office, and Warner Bros. removed Chapter 2 from its release calendar. All that being said, I'm glad Horizon exists because there are moments in this film — including the Apache raid and Hayes' confrontation with Caleb — that are pure cinematic magic. A Western about life on the American frontier is in Costner's wheelhouse. Mr. Costner, please sell the rights to Netflix to release the next three chapters. Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max.
