‘Crysis 4' development paused as Crytek lays off 15% of staff due to financial issues

Express Tribune12-02-2025
Crytek, the German-based developer known for the Crysis series, has announced that the development of 'Crysis 4' has been paused.
This decision comes as the studio plans to lay off approximately 15% of its workforce due to financial challenges. The layoffs are expected to impact around 60 employees from the development and shared services teams. Those affected will be offered severance packages and career assistance services.
Founded by the Yerli brothers, Crytek is renowned for creating the 'Crysis' series, which debuted in 2007. The series follows a group of nanosuited soldiers battling powerful mercenaries and alien invaders called the Ceph. The fourth installment was set to be a direct sequel to 'Crysis 3' (2013), and was expected to push the limits of modern gaming hardware. However, development on 'Crysis 4' has been on hold since the third quarter of 2024.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Crytek explained that this decision was part of ongoing efforts to ensure the studio's long-term financial sustainability. While 'Hunt: Showdown' continues to grow, the studio has faced increasing pressures to reduce costs across operations. Despite this setback, Crytek remains committed to the future of 'Hunt: Showdown,' especially following the popular addition of Ghost Face to the game's roster.
Crytek's portfolio also includes other major titles such as 'Far Cry,' 'Ryse: Son of Rome,' and 'Kingdom Come: Deliverance,' the latter developed by Warhorse Studios using Crytek's proprietary CryEngine.
As of 2024, Crytek is the largest game developer in Germany, with around 400 employees. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the 'Crysis Remastered Trilogy,' which includes support for Deep Learning Super Sampling on PC. Although development on 'Crysis 4' is on hold, the studio continues to work on other projects and maintains a hopeful outlook for the future.

NA panel seeks action over PTCL document delay

The Parliamentary Panel on Monday expressed serious concerns over a delay in submitting documents related to a property transaction and recommended disciplinary action against Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). MNA Aminul Haque of MQM chaired the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication. The chairman expressed displeasure over PTCL's failure to respond in time to queries regarding the sale and purchase agreements of its properties. PTCL President and Etisalat Group CEO Hatem Bamtaref, who attended the meeting via Zoom, was criticised for the delayed submission of briefing papers. Committee member Sher Ali called for formal action against PTCL, stating that reprimands were insufficient. Mahesh Kumar also raised concerns about the stalled merger between Ufone and Telenor. He accused Telenor of intentionally causing service disruptions. The PTA chairman said the merger case is currently under review by the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). Another member, Sadiq Memon, expressed serious concerns about reports of Microsoft scaling down its operations in Pakistan. Minister of State for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja clarified that Microsoft and Google have engaged in large-scale certification programmes in Pakistan. While Microsoft had laid off 16,000 employees globally over the past year, she said it remains unclear if any Pakistan-based employees were affected. She also revealed ongoing efforts to convert Microsoft's liaison office into a full operational setup in Pakistan and hinted at Google's potential entry into the local market. During the session of the NA body, Etisalat Group's Bamtaref underscored strong UAE-Pakistan ties and added that the group was focusing on emerging technologies like 5G and artificial intelligence. Officials from the Privatisation Commission informed the panel that PTCL's privatisation was finalised in 2006 under an international agreement, though they offered to share further details in an in-camera session. Committee members objected to the lack of prior notice for this request. PTCL officials clarified that the property agreement in question was between the Government of Pakistan and Etisalat and had no direct linkage with PTCL. The chairman postponed the agenda item to the next session and agreed to hold the upcoming meeting in-camera. On broader telecom issues, committee member Zulfiqar Ali lodged complaints about weak mobile signals in his constituency. The USF CEO assured him that the approved project would be completed. The PTA chairman also briefed the parliamentary panel on the status of Long Distance and International (LDI) operators, revealing that 9 out of 21 companies have pending license renewal cases, with over 100 related matters in court. Due to the complexity, the IT minister recommended forming a sub-committee to hear all stakeholders. The chairman agreed to this proposal. The PTA chairman confirmed that the interior ministry had ordered the suspension of internet services in Panjgur due to security concerns. He also revealed that over 100 telecom towers have been damaged in Balochistan, including three completely destroyed between July 9 and 12. Committee member Pauline Baloch emphasised the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan, noting that roads remained blocked for hours and basic services were under threat. Khawaja proposed holding a joint meeting to address these challenges.

Toronto rapper top5 stabbed in neck while attending Wireless Festival in London

Toronto rapper Top5, whose legal name is Hassan Ali, was reportedly stabbed in the neck by a masked assailant while visiting London over the weekend of July 13–14, 2025. The incident allegedly occurred while the artist was engaging with fans near the Wireless Festival, where fellow Toronto native Drake headlined for three consecutive nights. Top5 survives an attempted hit on his life in London after suffering stab wounds to his neck The Toronto rapper was talking to fans when a masked man ran by and stabbed him — keep6ixsolid (@keep6ixsolid) July 14, 2025 The stabbing was first reported by hip-hop commentator DJ Akademiks and Toronto-based blog keep6ixsolid. According to their accounts, a masked individual approached Top5 while he was speaking with fans and stabbed him in the neck. Despite the seriousness of the injury, Top5 survived and is reportedly recovering. Keep6ixsolid shared an update on Instagram stating that no major arteries were hit during the attack. Authorities have not confirmed the exact time or location of the incident, and as of now, Top5 or his team have not issued any public statements. The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear, though online speculation has pointed to ongoing tensions within Toronto's rap scene. Notably, rappers Why G and FB, known affiliates of the 'Wassa' camp, were also in London for the festival. Following news of the incident, both artists allegedly posted laughing emojis to their Instagram stories, which some interpreted as mockery or indirect commentary on the attack. Top5 has long been a controversial figure in Canadian hip-hop, known as much for his legal issues and online persona as for his music. In 2021, he was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 20-year-old Hashim Omar Hashi. However, those charges were stayed in 2024 after a court ruled that his lyrics and social media posts could not be used as evidence. Hours before the stabbing, Top5 reportedly said during a livestream, 'There are no real killers in London'—a comment some have viewed as potentially antagonistic. Hip-hop media figure DJ Akademiks, who is close to Top5, addressed the situation on Instagram, writing, 'Praying for peace at top five. I love you, brother.' Authorities in London have yet to comment on the incident.

American rapper Azealia Banks has publicly accused former UFC champion Conor McGregor of sending her unsolicited explicit images, sparking widespread attention and backlash online. In the posts, Banks alleged that McGregor not only sent her 'crooked' nude images but also attempted to silence her with threats. 'How you gonna send a btch some crooked dck pics then threaten her not to tell,' Banks wrote, tagging McGregor's official X account. '@TheNotoriousMMA n**** do you know who the f**k I am? Conor McGregor 4 President 🇮🇪 — Azealia Banks (@azealiaslacewig) July 14, 2025 McGregor, who turned 36 on the same day the allegations surfaced, reportedly deleted the messages and unfollowed Banks shortly after the posts went viral. Social media reaction was swift, with many users condemning McGregor's alleged actions and referencing the UK's Online Safety Act 2023, which criminalises sharing non-consensual explicit content. This incident adds to McGregor's history of legal and behavioural controversies. Earlier this year, he was ordered to pay €200,000 in damages to a woman in Ireland who accused him of rape. He is also facing a separate sexual assault lawsuit in the United States stemming from an alleged incident in a Miami arena restroom. McGregor has not publicly responded to Banks' claims. As the posts continue to circulate online, legal experts and advocacy groups have raised concerns about potential violations of privacy and online safety laws. Both parties have a history of public feuds, but the latest episode has reignited conversations around consent, power dynamics, and the consequences of celebrity misconduct in digital spaces.
