Two powerhouse companies make game-changing breakthrough that could revolutionize electric vehicles: 'Unprecedented speed'
BASF and Group14 Technologies announced their breakthrough silicon battery solution that delivers faster charging, higher energy density, and extreme durability — even when facing scorching temperatures that would typically damage traditional batteries. The innovation uses commercially available materials in a drop-in-ready format, making it easier for manufacturers to adopt quickly.

Silicon has long promised superior battery performance compared to traditional graphite, but past attempts struggled with stability and cycle life. The collaboration combines BASF's Licity 2698 X F binder — specifically developed for silicon-rich anodes — with Group14's advanced silicon battery material, called SCC55.
Test cells for the silicon battery typically exceed 1,000 charging cycles while retaining 80% of their capacity under standard conditions. These batteries still achieved over 500 cycles while providing nearly four times the capacity of traditional graphite anodes at temperatures reaching 113°F.
This innovation can help to address major barriers to EV adoption by promising batteries that charge faster, last longer, and perform reliably in extreme conditions. Group14's SCC55 material can improve charge times dramatically while enabling batteries to last up to 50% longer than conventional lithium-ion technology. Group14's SCC55 material already powers millions of devices worldwide, and their collaboration with BASF's specialized binding technology creates a solution that meets and exceeds current industry requirements for commercial battery production.

The company posted consolidated revenue of KRW 5.6 trillion, an 11.2 percent decrease quarter-on-quarter. The operating profit was KRW 492.2 billion, marking a 31.4 percent increase quarter-on-quarter, with operating profit margin of 8.8 percent. The operating profit includes North American production incentive, which is estimated at KRW 490.8 billion. "In the second quarter, we secured stable EV battery sales and also started production at our new ESS battery facility in North America," said Chang Sil Lee, CFO of LG Energy Solution. "However, constrained customer purchase sentiment, coupled with the reflection of metal price decline to our average selling price (ASP) affected our quarterly revenue." Lee added, "At the same time, we saw improvements in our product mix thanks to increased production in North America, along with enhanced cost efficiency and favorable material cost ratio, all of which contributed to the quarterly operating profit even when excluding North American production incentive." At the earnings conference, LG Energy Solution outlined its market outlook and strategic action plans for the second-half of the year. Following tariff and policy changes in the U.S., Europe, the U.K. and the associated cost pressure on major automakers, the company anticipates a short-term slowdown in EV demand. At the same time, it expects advancements in autonomous driving technology to drive mid-to long-term growth momentum. The company projects increased demand in the energy storage system (ESS) market, capitalizing on new business opportunities from both existing and new renewable energy plants and AI data centers. It also predicts that the IRA Investment Tax Credit (ITC) will present more opportunities by incentivizing a shift in the supply chain toward non-Chinese battery suppliers. In terms of market competition, the company expects recent policy changes to strengthen barriers against Prohibited Foreign Entities (PFE) entering the U.S. battery market, thereby reinforcing the advantage for battery companies that have already secured local production capabilities and stable operational competencies. Taking these transitions into account, LG Energy Solution now aims to build on its second-quarter accomplishments and maintain its growth momentum. In the second quarter, the company focused on establishing local ESS battery production, which recently came to fruition with the start of production at its first North American ESS battery manufacturing hub in Michigan. Tesla's going through a bumpy ride. The electric vehicle company on Wednesday reported a second consecutive quarter of declining auto sales. In Europe, Tesla's market share fell for the sixth straight month to 2.8% in June from 3.4% a year ago. The Trump administration's plans to reportedly roll back the U.S.' push for cleaner vehicles will probably hit Tesla further. A $7,500 EV tax credit in the U.S. will expire at the end of September, indirectly raising the cost of Tesla vehicles. Meanwhile, traditional carmakers will no longer need to purchase EV regulatory credits from Tesla — which receives them for free because its vehicles are completely electric — as the Trump administration intends to stop fining traditional carmakers for missing emission standards. That means Tesla will soon lose a source of revenue. They say bad things come in threes. Here's the last. While Tesla's bitcoin holding is currently worth $1.24 billion, according to its investor deck, it could have been worth billions more. In 2022, the company dumped 75% of its bitcoin. But faced with mounting debt driven by deteriorating electric vehicle demand and a flood of low-cost components from fast-growing Chinese rivals, the startup's business model proved chipmaker JS Foundry, also known as JS Fab, launched in December 2022 with the backing of a fund run by the Development Bank of Japan and created by Mercuria Investment and Sangyo Sosei Advisory. JS Foundry filed for bankruptcy protection with the Tokyo District Court last week, leaving behind an estimated $110 million in outstanding debt. Finally, JS Foundry attempted talks with overseas investors to form a capital tie-up that would have helped it enter the silicon carbide power semiconductor segment, a next-generation technology known for its superior power those talks collapsed earlier this year, effectively cutting off JS Foundry's last remaining viable path to survival. JS Foundry's collapse comes amid broader turmoil in the power semiconductor space. Rohm, another Japanese chip giant, recently reported its first net loss in over a decade, blaming underperforming power semiconductor investments. Last month, U.S.-based Wolfspeed () , previously known as Cree, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move triggered major write-downs for Japanese chipmaker Renasas Electronics, which had extended financing to Wolfspeed.
