Britain's Tarvet says 'not here for the money' after landmark Wimbledon win
by Naharnet Newsdesk 30 June 2025, 17:11 Britain's Oliver Tarvet shrugged off any bitter feelings about rules preventing him from collecting all of his Wimbledon prize money to beat fellow qualifier Leandro Riedi in the first round on Monday. The San Diego University student rose to the occasion in his first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam, dispatching his Swiss opponent 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The 21-year-old will face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Italian veteran Fabio Fognini in the second round. Tarvet's victory came after he battled through three rounds of qualifying to make it to the grass-court Grand Slam for the first time. But Tarvet, currently 733 in the ATP rankings, will not profit significantly from his hard work. Under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules in the United States, players are required to stay amateur and are restricted in how much prize money they can claim from professional tournaments. Tarvet is planning to go back to university for his final year, meaning his Wimbledon prize money, which is now guaranteed to be at least £99,000 ($135,000), will largely go unclaimed. Tarvet can collect $10,000 as well as the expenses he has incurred during the tournament. The British player has called for a change in the rules, joking that he would fly his coach to London with a first-class ticket to try to ensure he would not have to forfeit too much. "In my opinion, I've worked hard to get this money. I don't feel like it's undeserved the money that I've got," he said before the tournament. "I think it would be good to see a change in the rules of the NCAA, but at the same time, I don't want to get involved. It's not really my place." After securing the biggest win of his career, Tarvet hugged his family at courtside and insisted money was only part of his motivation at Wimbledon. "I've got to find more and more on expenses by the day," he said. "We'll see. I'm not here for the money, I'm here for the crowd and the experience and just to stamp my mark. I think I've done a pretty good job so far," he told the BBC. "There's a lot of emotions, just really overjoyed. All the hard work I put in the last few years has clearly paid off. "It's my first tour-level event, to come out here, come through qualifying, win a first-round match, have a chance to play maybe Carlos on Wednesday, it's just a dream come true."

Paris Saint-Germain beats Seattle Sounders 2-0 to reach Club World Cup round of 16
by Naharnet Newsdesk 24 June 2025, 17:22 Paris Saint-Germain didn't allow a single shot on goal as the European powerhouse beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 on Monday and advanced to the Club World Cup round of 16. Paris Saint-Germain opened the scoring in the 35th minute when a shot from Vitinha that would've finished well wide of the net hit teammate Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and deflected in. The UEFA Champions League winners scored again in the 66th minute as the Sounders' transition defense broke down. Seattle failed to locate Achraf Hakimi, who was wide open by the back post. Bradley Barcola's pass found him with plenty of time to control and strike. Paris Saint-Germain won Group B on a goal-differential tiebreaker after Atlético Madrid defeated Botafogo 1-0. The 68,740-capacity Lumen Field was lively with 50,628 fans. Key moment Jordan Morris returned to the pitch for the Sounders for the first time since April to a massive home-crowd ovation. It was a meaningful moment for fans as Morris, who grew up in the area, played a key role in helping his longtime franchise qualify for the Club World Cup. Takeaways Paris will play the runner-up of Group A on Sunday in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Seattle has been eliminated from the cup. What they said "I think it was a great match, difficult for us, tough from the beginning because Seattle played a great match with intensity and quality on and off the ball. I think all the supporters enjoyed the show, and I like the way we play." — Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique "This has been one of the, I would say, toughest parts of my career in terms of missing this tournament. So much of the excitement around this year was this tournament. ... You drive around, see yourself on the bus (ads), you want to be out there playing. Watching these guys compete and do so well in this tournament, I just wanted to be out there to try to help. … But I'm looking forward to what's to come this year." — Morris

Wessam consolidated his hat trick with a header that sent the ball into the center of the box. Key moment Pepê converted the tying goal with his right foot from outside the box into the bottom left corner. Takeaways Both teams finished 0-2-1 in the tournament.
