Magic: The Gathering Has a Final Fantasy XV Cup Noodle Card

Gizmodo17-05-2025
With this 'Magic' card, longtime 'Final Fantasy XV' fans will never forget one of its most egregious forms of product placement.
Last week, Wizards of the Coast unveiled a sizable portion of its Final Fantasy cards coming to Magic: The Gathering in June. Now, the publisher's revealing some more of what's in store, and Final Fantasy XV fans will get a good laugh out of that game's representation in this set.
One of the Artifact cards players can get is 'Instant Ramen'; in Magic terms, it lets players draw a card or gain 3 Life if sacrificed. For those who played the 2016 RPG, it's a cheeky callback to that game's instant meal Noctis and friends can scarf down during their travels. In the game, players can take the 'Perfect Cup' side quest in Chapter 8 and acquire ingredients to make the best cup noodles your party member Gladiolus has ever had. Completing the quest gives Ignis a new recipeh! to cook for everyone else and provides stat boosts.
These weren't just any cup noodles featured in Final Fantasy XV: they were the Cup Noodle, from Nissin, a popular food manufacturer in Japan. Billboards for the noodles are placed around the game, and Square Enix later updated the game with even more cup noodle-themed cosmetics. XV was no stranger to product placement; another side quest had Noctis gazing at a dress worn by his lover Luna that was made by Vivienne Westwood, and the American Express logo could be spotted throughout the game. Subtle, this was not, and that's before the two-sided collaboration event with Assassin's Creed. Maybe another card puts Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII in her Versace dress?
Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy cards release on June 13.

Nintendo president apologizes for Switch 2 shortage — says demand greatly exceeded expectations

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has issued an apology during the company's 85th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, acknowledging that initial demand for the Switch 2 'greatly exceeded expectations.' The long-awaited console arrived on store shelves early in June, smashing the original Nintendo Switch's sales record by almost a million copies. Although it seems that the U.S. and the U.K. did not face any supply issues during the launch, other markets — most notably Japan — aren't as lucky. According to Nintendo Life, one shareholder even asked Furukawa about the reason for the shortage because of how severe the problem seemed to be. 'Currently, demand for the Switch 2 is outpacing supply in many countries, and we're unable to fully meet it. We understand that even some of our shareholders have not been able to obtain one. Starting in April, we accepted lottery-based purchases through the My Nintendo Store. The number of applicants greatly exceeded our expectations, with 2.2 million entries — a figure I publicly announced in my name along with an apology,' Furukawa said during the meeting [machine translated]. 'Since then, we've held four rounds of lottery sales, but there are still many who weren't selected. We've announced a fifth round starting in July. Many major retail stores have also resorted to lottery-based sales,' he added. 'Gradually, more locations are beginning to offer direct in-store sales as well. As a company, we are working to strengthen our production system so we can deliver as many units as possible to our customers. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the initial demand far exceeding our forecasts.' The company apparently prioritized the U.S. and Europe, which are its largest markets. According to Statista, Japan only ranks third in the company's global revenue, so it makes sense for Nintendo to stock up in countries where it will make the most sales. But even though gamers in those areas can easily buy a Switch 2, they did not escape from a few hiccups, including a few units that showed signs of tampering and staples puncturing screens after store employees staple the receipt to the box. Despite those issues, the Switch 2 is one of the more successful global launches in recent history. While some regions did not escape shortages, this is unlike the arrival of Nvidia's RTX 40-series and 50-series GPUs and the PlayStation 5, which all suffered from a lack of supply, leading to artificially increased prices and the proliferation of scalpers. So, if you're in the U.S. and the U.K., you don't have to worry about getting stiffed when buying the latest Nintendo gaming console — you can easily get one as long as you know where to buy the Switch 2. ‘Mecha Break' Is Finally Here, Get Ready For Some Epic Mecha Action

'Mecha Break' is finally out and available to play on PC and Xbox Series X|S. It's been a long while, but Mecha Break is finally here, and it delivers. With stunning visuals and fast-paced mecha combat, it's a blast to play. With multiple open betas and a long, troubled development history, it's taken a good while for the game to find its feet, but Mecha Break is now finally available to play on general release. It's also playable on Xbox Series X|S, and I've been giving it a proper go. It holds up surprisingly well on console with a pad, and it will be interesting to see how it does long-term. This is because, with the styling of the mecha designs and general high-speed aerial gameplay, I think that Mecha Break will find its audience mostly in Asia. So the choice of Xbox Series X|S to start with seems a bit strange, as the Xbox brand has never been popular in places like Japan, but a PlayStation 5 version is apparently still planned. You can also pick up the game over on PC via Steam, which is where I assume the bulk of the initial players will be. In any case, Mecha Break is a big and unashamed mecha game. Not a Gundam game trying to be an Overwatch clone, or a shooter with dudes cosplaying as mecha. ‘Gundam Hathaway' Gets A 90s Anime Makeover In Fan Animation

The Xi Gundam looks more like its Kazumi Fujita counterpart in this fan animation. Back when the Hathaway's Flash novels were written, no one thought we'd ever see an anime. So this new fan animation pays tribute to that in a very 90s way. Done by Space Boy, it approaches the story from the perspective of the original novels. That means character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto and modified designs by Kazumi Fujita, based on Moriki Yasuhiro's original illustrations. It also means that we have four tone shading, which holds up with the rest of 90s mecha anime, which would have been how these books had been adapted, if Sunrise had decided to go ahead with an anime right after the books were published. Personally, I think this looks superb. It also looks like it's done in 3D with some clever shading to make it work. Going 3D also makes a lot of sense, as the Xi Gundam and Penelope are incredibly complex mobile suit designs. The recent movie version of the first novel is much flatter in terms of the shading, with more modern character design. It's still great, but part of me now wishes we'd had Hathaway's Flash adapted back in the 90s. Space Boy also did a video a few months back of the Messer mobile suits from the Hathaway's Flash novels. These are effectively the grunt mobile suits of Mafty and also pop up in the movie version. Talking of the movie version, you can watch the first Gundam Hathaway movie over on Netflix. With the second movie set for release this Winter. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube.
