Madhoo Shah opens up on filming a ‘horrible' kissing scene; says it made her feel bad: ‘It didn't serve any purpose'

Madhoo Shah
, also known simply as Madhoo, shot to fame in the early 1990s with iconic performances in 'Phool Aur Kaante', 'Roja', and 'Allari Priyudu'. Her performance in
Mani Ratnam
's 'Roja' made her a household name.
Despite her fame, Madhoo always had clear boundaries when it came to acting. She believed in keeping a 'gharelu' image and says it was her 'upbringing' that didn't allow her to do bold films.
'I said yes to everything… except this'
Madhoo never had many conditions when it came to accepting film roles, except one. In an interview with News18 Showsha, she said, 'And that's the only reason why I turned down films. Otherwise, I said yes to everything that came my way.'
That one deal-breaker? No explicit scenes.
A kissing scene that left her shaken
But even after setting her boundaries, one uncomfortable moment made its way into her career. Madhoo shared that there was one film where she ended up kissing her co-star – something she hadn't been told about in advance. 'It wasn't the kind of kiss that we see in films today. It was more like a peck on the lips but that made me feel really bad,' she recalled.
The most shocking part? She found out only after reaching the set.
'That I was required to kiss wasn't something that was conveyed to me before I began shooting. When I was told, they took me to the side and we had a conversation. They explained to me why it was important and that's why I did it. But it was the most horrible and non-convincing thing I had to do,' Madhoo shared.
'The kiss didn't even serve any purpose'
Madhoo went ahead with the scene, but it didn't sit well with her.
Looking back, she doesn't think it added anything meaningful to the film. 'The kiss didn't even serve any purpose. I didn't even have a conversation with the director to not include that scene in the film. I let it pass. I was too young in every way and not just by age. Today, 22-year-olds and 24-year-olds are so clever and exposed. At 22, I was very naïve,' she said honestly.
When 'Fire' sparked something new in her thinking
Years later, it was
Deepa Mehta
's 1996 film 'Fire' that helped shift Madhoo's mindset about on-screen intimacy. The film starred
Shabana Azmi
and
Nandita Das
as lesbian lovers – a bold move at the time.
'I don't mean to say that onscreen kissing is a bad thing. When I saw 'Fire' starring actors like Shabana ji, I thought they really broke the barrier of their own conditioning, which I was unable to do back then. I don't think I can do what they did even now. I appreciate actors who can shave their heads off or play lesbians in films,' she said.
Slowly stepping out of her comfort zone
Madhoo now hopes to take small steps to overcome her past fears and challenge herself as an actor. She expressed her desire to separate herself as a person and an actor and break psychological barriers in her own way. Reflecting on her younger years, she said she was once just a girl who wanted to be a movie star, but now she is an actor who wants to take on different kinds of roles. 'I want to see how much I can break my own conditioning and transform myself and if I can play a role as convincingly as Shabana ji did in 'Fire',' she shared.

Ronit Roy Reveals Why Playing Mihir In Kyunki Reboot 'Didn't Work' For Him: 'Unfortunately…'

Last Updated: Ekta Kapoor's TV saga Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi returns with a limited reboot. Ronit Roy, who played Mihir Virani, is happy for the show but said he won't return. Ekta Kapoor's iconic television saga Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which originally premiered in 2000, has officially returned with a limited reboot series. The much-awaited first episode of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 dropped on July 29, 2025. Ronit Roy, who portrayed Mihir Virani from 2000 to 2008, stepping into the role after Amar Upadhyay, recently expressed his joy over the show's comeback after 25 years, and revealed why the show couldn't work out for him. Talking about Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi reboot, Ronit Roy told ETimes, 'I am happy that they decided to bring back Kyunki. Unfortunately, it did not work out for me, but, of course, Kyunki is a show that has been very close to my heart. I did Kyunki for eight years of my life. And I wish the cast and crew of Kyunki, and the makers, the very best. Looking forward to watching it." Ronit Roy also shared his thoughts on returning to a long-running television show. He said, 'So I'm not averse to doing a long show or being on television for a long time. However, as I mentioned, there is still much to be desired on television. 25 years since I began. The world has changed. Some things need to be fixed regarding television. So once that happens, I will likely be back. Till such time, I'm happy where I am." Ronit Roy also reflected on how television has evolved over the years. He admitted he wasn't entirely sure about the current landscape, calling his recent return a brief stint. Comparing it to his earlier days in the industry, he noted that while he began doing mainstream television in 2000 and it's now 2025, there's still a lot of progress to be made, adding that 'there is much to be desired." News18 Showsha in its review for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi Reboot, wrote, 'Interestingly, Ekta Kapoor chose to keep the opening scene of her new show exactly the same as the iconic introductions she's known for in her earlier serials. Right from a Ganpathi idol to the dramatic camera angles and even the visual styling — nothing has changed. It's almost as if time stood still as Ekta decided to bring Tulsi back. The daily soap queen, who's often credited with shaping Indian television drama, didn't try to reinvent the wheel here. Instead, she leaned into the familiarity, perhaps intentionally, to evoke a strong sense of nostalgia among viewers." view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 15:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vikrant Massey To Win National Award For 12th Fail, Rani Mukerji 'Strong Contender' For Best Actress?

As per reports, Rani Mukerji is being considered for her role in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Amid buzz that the National Awards will be announced soon, new reports claim that Vikrant Massey will win the Best Actor award, and that Rani Mukerji is a strong contender in the Best Actress category. While Vikrant will reportedly win for 12th Fail, Rani is being considered for Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Senior Journalist Subhash K Jha quoted a source as saying, 'Vikrant Massey's performance in 12th Fail is getting him the National Award. It is final." The source also mentioned, 'For the National award for Best Actress, Rani Mukerji is a very strong contender for her role in the film, Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, and there are also two actresses from the South also in the reckoning." While these are only unconfirmed speculations, Vikrant Massey's fans are waiting with bated breath to witness their favourite actor's dream come true. Earlier this year, Vikrant Massey exclusively told News18 Showsha that he has prayed for a National Award since he was a child wanting to be an actor. Reacting to the buzz around 12th Fail's speculated National Award win, Vikrant told us, 'I hope it does. And I'm sorry, without cost of sounding pompous, and with utmost humility. I hope it does. I hope the film wins an award. I hope Vidhu Vinod Chopra wins an award. I hope I win an award. I've always aspired for one." 'I've prayed for one when I was that young kid wanting to become an actor, I always wanted a National Award because that's the greatest achievement an actor in India can have, to be presented with an award by the President of the country. And I hope it happens. So, fingers crossed," the actor added. Meanwhile, on the work front, after Aankhon Ki Gustaakiyan with Shanaya Kapoor, Vikrant Massey is all set for his next film titled White, where he plays the titular role of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. As for Rani Mukerji, Mardaani 3 has been officially announced and is in production. The actress has also reportedly been roped in for Shah Rukh Khan's King. However, this is yet to be confirmed. Chum Darang On Rejecting Offers After Bigg Boss 18: 'I Wouldn't Do Stereotypical Roles'

Last Updated: Chum Darang gets candid about the biases she has encountered and passionately advocates for greater inclusivity in the entertainment industry. Chum Darang, who hails from Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, has opened up about facing discrimination in the showbiz world. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, the actress got candid about the biases she has encountered and passionately advocated for greater inclusivity in the entertainment industry. 'With a face like this, I think discrimination has walked along. I'm being very blunt right now. It is true that we do look a bit different. People are not aware of the region that I come from," Chum told us. Chum, who has been vocal about representation and inclusivity, stressed that while change has begun, there's a long way to go. 'I've been saying this for a very long time that inclusivity should be there. It's high time. I know it's there. Now that I'm a part of this industry, I can surely say that it is there, but it should be there on a larger scale. This is a very important medium. Everyone watches the Cinema, TV. So this is a very important medium and this has a lot of reach. So if inclusivity is done on the right page, I think it will reach the masses and people will be more aware about a lot of things," the actress added. Chum also pointed out that these biases often limit opportunities for actors from the Northeast, making it difficult to break through. 'We need risk takers to change this narrative. If we are willing to accept change and if we are willing to risk even a little bit, then things would definitely change. It is disheartening. Let's be very honest. But I truly hope it changes," she shared. 'I'm getting a lot of offers but those are not very nice. And from the very limited things that I get, I have to choose. That sometimes becomes a little discouraging for people who come from our region," she added. Chum also made it clear that she does not want to be a part of a project which stereotypes people coming from the Northeast. 'I would not want to do stereotypical roles. I can only vouch for myself. I can't speak for others, but I really would want people to just be choosy when it comes to representing or going out there. If I agree to do something that doesn't meet my standards, I would never do that. It does create a thing in somebody else's head. Then they keep writing the same things for people like us," she said. Chum Darang shared these thoughts while promoting her recent collaboration with Glow & Lovely's campaign, 'Apni Roshni Baahar La' — a nationwide movement encouraging women to lead with authenticity and purpose. Talking about the campaign, Chul said, 'It is a beautiful campaign, which I have been a part of.. It speaks about bringing your inner light out and being a part of this campaign makes me happy. It is something so important that everybody has to understand and inculcate that thing in their daily lives. It's a very beautiful message." First Published:
