Hamilton and Airdrie to host Scottish Chamber Orchestra concerts
Musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) will be hitting the high notes in Hamilton and Airdrie ans they visit on the ensemble's annual summer tour.
The orchestra will perform at Hamilton Town House on in July, with the programme including a world premiere, and then at Sir John Wilson Town Hall in Airdrie the following month where a trio of 'romantic' music treats are in store.
Online bookings for both events are available now, with tickets ranging in price from £20 for standard admission to free entry for under-18s.
SCO conductor Jonathan Bloxham will bring the orchestra to Hamilton Town House on July 17 as part of a three-date tour round Scotland with a programme showcasing their 'versatility and artistry in full force'.
The concert will feature the world premiere of Rewired, a concerto for soprano saxophone and chamber orchestra featuring soloist Lewis Banks and which is one of two new works for this year written by SCO associate composer Jay Capperauld.
Also on the programme at the 'summer classics' performance are Haydn's Symphony No. 80 in D minor, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat, often described as his 'most joyful' work.
The Airdrie performance on August 27 will be led by conductor Jakob Lehmann and principal clarinettist Maximiliano Martín, with the audience enjoying 'an evening of energy and elegance in a concert that sparkles with wit and youthful charm'.
It will open with Rossini's Overture to The Barber of Seville, described as 'a whirlwind of bustling brilliance and comedic flair' – before Martin takes centre stage for Spohr's clarinet concerto No. 2 in E-flat, followed by Schubert's Symphony No. 2 in B-flat.
Both Lanarkshire concerts take place at 7.30pm on their respective dates and are part of a wider 20-date tour across Scotland aiming to 'build relationships with local communities, put SCO musicians centre stage and bring world-class concerts to audiences who might otherwise not be able to experience them'.
Chief executive Gavin Reid said: 'We look forward to hitting the road once again [this summer] and bringing music to communities across Scotland. With our world-class musicians and a dynamic programme that truly showcases the depth of our orchestra, this tour promises to offer something for everyone – we can't wait to share the joy of live music.'

MOVIE REVIEW: We see if 'Superman' is a soaring start to the new 'DCU'
Vulnerable and battle-hardened 'Man of Steel' rocks in emotional thrill ride. James Gunn, co-creator of the new DC Universe ( DCU) 'media franchise', has taken it upon himself to helm its first big screen outing. David Corenswet stars as the Man of Steel and, thankfully, we dive straight into the action as there was no need for another take on Superman's origin story. Truthfully, despite really enjoying Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and Suicide Squad, I was nervous for this as the trailers hinted at a humour-heavy tone. There is some of that here but it doesn't overwhelm the story Gunn, also on writing duties, is trying to tell and with the odd exception - turning Skyler Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen into a ladies' magnet - laughs are earned. Raw emotion is often delivered - pretty much any scene involving Corenswet and Pruitt Taylor Vince's Pa Kent - and although we see very little of Corenswet's Clark, this is the most vulnerable cinematic Superman yet. Corenswet excels, whether his Man of Steel is physically and mentally beaten, wrestling with his adopted humanity, sharing tender moments with Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane or soaring through the skies into battle. There are a lot of characters but most get time to shine and Gunn doesn't burden his film with too many teases of what is to come in the DCU. Brosnahan is a steadfast, initiative-taking Lois, Nicholas Hoult's hot-headed, manipulative Lex Luthor is a nice throwback to the hyper-intelligent inventor often seen in animated form, Edi Gathegi's deadpan Mr Terrific is a surprise scene-stealer and, as made obvious in the trailers, Krypto makes for a wonderful canine companion. A late villain reveal is extremely obvious and, at times, there's an overload of CGI amid punch-heavy combat. And Gunn makes a brave change to Superman's origin that may annoy some devotees - but I was on board with it. Superman as a whole soars high on the comic-book movie scale as well as setting the stage for an exciting future for DC fans young and old. ● Are you excited for the new DCU? Stacey Dooley and Strictly partner Kevin Clifton make exciting joint announcement
The couple have been together since they won Strictly in 2018. BBC Strictly professional Kevin Clifton has shared an update with fans over a huge 'first' with his long-term partner Stacey Dooley, seven years after the pair won the ITV show. The couple have lived a happy life together since they were dance partners on the 2018 series of Strictly, and they share a daughter together. Documentary journalist Stacey and dancer Kevin are set to work together for the first time since their Strictly triumph. The pair announced back in March that they are going to be hitting the stage together in the critically acclaimed, smash hit, supernatural thriller 2:22 - A Ghost Story. The play's extensive UK-wide tour opens at Manchester Opera House on August 4, and will continue through to November. There will be a second leg of the tour running from January 8 - June 20 2026, with casting to be announced, reports Manchester Evening News. Returning to the role of Jenny following a limited run at the Gielgud Theatre in 2024, Stacey will perform alongside Kevin who will play Jenny's husband, Sam. With just weeks to go until the tour opens, Kevin and Stacey have been seen heading into rehearsals. Alongside a picture of the pair on Instagram, former Strictly pro Kevin said: "Day 1 back working with this little fella again. Last time was 7 years ago @sjdooley @222aghoststory." And fans were quick to share their excitement. @bizzielizzie39 said: "Can't wait to watch you both in it, coming to Manchester next month." @andielcfcsutton wrote: "Can't wait to see you both in it." @kaz_evs commented: "Coming to see you in Bristol and am more than excited!" @susancronshaw added: "Looking forward to seeing you in August in Manchester." The news of the couple's rehearsing comes after Kevin opened up about what it could be like working with his real-life partner. Even though Stacey, 38, has learnt to leave her characters - including Jenny - at the stage door, Kevin, 42, has to "live and breath" his characters and, therefore, may bring Sam home with them. Speaking on the latest episode of the All That Chat podcast, Kevin admitted: "We're not a very argumentative couple - touch wood - we don't argue a lot. "I'm sure it'll be fine. But also, Stace and me are very different in that Stace can very much go do her job, do it great, and then leave it at the door and come home. "Whereas I'm a bit obsessive and I have to live and breathe the character. I'll probably bring the character home, which might get interesting. It could be the ending of us." Kevin thinks it will be tricky to act with Stacey on stage. He explained: "When it's your partner in front of you who knows everything about you and all your insecurities and then you start playing this character in front of them ... it's going to be weird. Michael Madsen's cause of death revealed weeks after actor's death aged 67
Michael Madsen's cause of death has been confirmed after the Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 star died on July 3. Madsen's manager, Ron Smith, confirmed that the actor died earlier this month after suffering a cardiac arrest and being found unresponsive in his Malibu home. Now his death certificate from the L.A. County Medical Examiner has been released, confirming the cause of the cardiac arrest. The report, seen by TMZ, detailed that Madsen was dealing with cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, and chronic alcoholism, which brought on the cardiac arrest. Another significant condition was thromboembolic disease (also known as deep vein thrombosis). After Madsen's death, various celebrities and family members paid tribute to the actor, remembering him fondly. Per the NHS, symptoms of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in the leg are: throbbing pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh, when walking or standing up swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs) warm skin around the painful area red or darkened skin around the painful area – this may be harder to see on brown or black skin swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them Madsen's son Luke, who he shared with ex-wife DeAnna, shared a loving but heartbreaking tribute on Instagram about his father, also mentioning his late brother. 'Some people's heroes wear capes. And fly shooting lasers out of their eyes. Some people's heroes can fight off armies and overcome anything. 'My hero wore a cowboy hat. My hero stood taller and stronger than any man I've ever met. My hero understood me better than anyone. My Hero is the coolest, most badass human being I know.' Hudson Lee Madsen, was Luke's older brother and Madsen's son, who took his own life in 2022 when he was 26 years old. After appearing on screens for the first time in the 1980s, Madsen earned over 300 credits to his name throughout his career, including the likes of Sin City, Species and James Bond flick Die Another Day, as well as his long-running collaboration with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino. His first notable screen role was in the science fiction film WarGame in 1983, going on to appear in Killing Time, Blood Red and Thelma & Louise. More Trending His first real breakout role came in Quentin Tarantino's 1992 directorial debut, Reservoir Dogs, in which he played the criminal and main villain, Mr. Blonde. Following this role, he appeared in the Free Willy franchise, Mulholland Falls and Die Another Day, before other notable roles came in Tarantino's Kill Bill films in 2003 and 2004, and Tarantino's 2015 flick The Hateful Eight. Madsen was also cast in Sin City, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Scary Movie 4.
