Patriots 2025 NFL Draft Guide: Edge Rushers

Yahoo19-04-2025
EDITOR'S NOTE: MassLive's Mark Daniels released his Ultimate Patriots Draft Guide for 2025 on Thursday, April 17. This story is an excerpt focused on the Edge Rushers in this year's class.
When it comes to a pass rusher, Mike Vrabel had an anchor in his Titans' defensive line with Jeffrey Simmons. He also had multiple different outside linebackers and prototypical defensive ends.

At defensive end, the Titans played Denico Autry (2021-2023), Mario Edwards (2022), and Jack Crawford (2020) in that span. They didn't draft any prototypical defensive ends under Vrabel.
Here are their Combine averages (note only one player did the bench press, so the number is skewed):

At outside linebacker, Harold Landry was one of Vrabel's top draft picks and performers. Landry was one of three outside linebackers drafted between 2018-2023 in Tennessee. Also drafted were Rashad Weaver and D'Andre Walker.
Here are the averages for those Titans outside linebackers:

As you can see, there's a stark difference between a Vrabel defensive end and an outside linebacker. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the Patriots add one of each in this draft.

Keeping those numbers in mind, here are the best Patriots fits:

Arguably the best player in this draft, Carter is an elite pass rusher. He played off-ball linebacker and defensive end at Penn State. Last year, he led the FBS with 23.5 tackles for loss and 12 sacks. Carter was dominant, earning First-team All-American, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and Defensive Lineman of the Year. He's ultra-athletic, agile, aggressive, and plays with high intensity. He's a projected Pro Bowl talent who could go in the top 3. The Patriots met with him at the Combine and he had a pre-draft visit in New England.
Keep an eye on: Mykel Williams, Georgia

Williams is an ultra-athletic pass rusher with a high upside. He earned Second-team All-SEC honors the last two seasons. Williams finished with five sacks and two forced fumbles last year. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, he has the size and athletic traits that suggest he could develop into an explosive NFL pass rusher. That's more of a projection as Williams will have to reach his high ceiling. He'll be a first-round draft pick. Williams had a pre-draft visit with the Patriots.

Batty is built like a prototypical defensive end (6-foot-6, 271 pounds) and hits on five Titans marks. He also hits on five traits as an outside linebacker. A team captain, he earned First-team All-Big 12 honors after making 59 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two interceptions. Service a 2-year LDS mission in Malaga and Spain and will be 25 as a rookie. Batty started a horse therapy non-profit and earned an award for community service in 2023. He's a projected Day 3 pick.

Downs is a 6-foot-4, 269-pound edge rusher who hits on six prototypical Titans traits as an outside linebacker. He finished with three sacks with 29 tackles, nine for loss. He's a two-time second-team All-Big 12 pick. He won OU's Bob Kalsu Award for leadership and serving as a role model last season. In 2023, he was honored for his exemplary community impact. He's a projected Day 3 pick.

Oladego is one of the most well-connected prospects to the Patriots. Eliot Wolf was on hand for his UCLA Pro Day. The Patriots then brought Oladego in for a pre-draft visit. He is the prototypical size for a Vrabel outside linebacker (6-foot-3, 259 pounds). Oladego is a high-character prospect who finished with 57 tackles, 13.5 for loss, and 4.5 sacks last season. He started his career as a middle linebacker before transitioning to an edge rusher. He's a projected third or fourth-round pick.

Bill Belichick nearly made ex-Patriots star Stephon Gilmore cry in front of team

Bill Belichick is not afraid to rip a player a new one, and Stephon Gilmore was apparently no exception. Gilmore, 34, recalled a time when Belichick lashed out at him during a team meeting not long after the cornerback first arrived in New England in 2017. 'He killed me one day, bro. It was when I first got there,' the five-time Pro Bowler said during an appearance on The Money Down Podcast on Thursday. 'I was pressed down on the receiver. It was a bunch route. …And I got picked. Bro, he killed me the next meeting. Advertisement 3 Head coach Bill Belichick of the North Carolina Tar Heels coaches at Kenan Stadium on April 12, 2025 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Getty Images 'I almost cried, how he did me. I ain't going to lie to you. I went to the bathroom, like man, bro. I can tell you one thing: I ain't never got picked again after that.' Gilmore, who wound up spending four years with the Patriots, was named to two All-Pro teams and took home Defensive Player of the Year honors for 2019 during his tenure there. Getty Images The South Carolina alum was also a member of New England's Super Bowl championship squad in 2018. Despite Belichick's apparent outburst toward Gilmore, the cornerback has always talked highly of the legendary coach, calling him the 'greatest' he's ever been around while criticizing the portrayal of him in the 'Dynasty' docuseries, which aired on Apple TV+ last year. 'Just watched The Dynasty. Bill was the greatest coach I've ever been around. Don't let that fool you. I'll never forget we were a predominantly man team during the 2018 season all the way up to the Super Bowl. When we played the Rams we switched to Zone,' Gilmore posted on X then. Gilmore has made clear, however, that he hopes to be on a team for the upcoming season. Advertisement 'I wanna play this year. It's just gotta be the right situation…I'm not just going to sign anywhere, it gotta be the right situation,' Gilmore said during the podcast. 'I still love the game. I still can contribute. Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings

Strange Darren Waller Trade Highlights Giants' Failings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Following their surprise playoff victory in the 2023 playoffs, the New York Giants got bold. They knew they needed to find top-notch talent to incorporate into their roster if they wanted to continue to move upward and compete with the best teams in their division and more. Advertisement Could the Giants stick with the likes of the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles? Could they make the moves to do so? Alas, the changes they made had a different effect on the franchise. Since their surprising 9-7-1 season in 2022, and their playoff win in the postseason, New York has seen their win total decrease in major ways. A big part of that has been the lack of production from some of the team's biggest acquisitions. Former tight end Darren Waller is among the best examples of this. Waller played just a single season with New York in 2023 after being acquired from the Las Vegas Raiders. The former sixth-round pick recorded 52 catches for over 550 yards and a single touchdown reception. He also missed five games due to injuries. Advertisement The former Pro Bowler retired shortly after the season. ... very much making it sound like he simply didn't like football anymore. After a year off the field, Waller is back - as a member of the Miami Dolphins. In a strange arrangement, New York traded the 32-year-old this week to allow Waller a chance to return to playing at the NFL level. Waller's retirement and return just highlight how massive some of Giants general manager Joe Schoen's failings during the offseason have been. New York has seen top draft picks be unable to make a positive impact, while acquisitions provide little relief. It's a big reason the team won just three games last year. Advertisement Waller's trade is a relatively good move for the G-Men, as they will get a little something back for a retired player. But the deal jumping into the headlines also highlights the whiff of a trade that brought Waller here in the first place, while also exposing just how much work needs to be done here to get this franchise back in shape to truly compete in the NFC East. And not just for one blip-on-the-radar screen playoff appearance. Sam Presti tells 2 stories about Jaylin Williams' personality: 'He's a source of energy'

As the Oklahoma City Thunder celebrated their 2025 NBA championship in their parade, Jaylin Williams was one of the highlights of the event. He made it worth it for the thousands of folks who battled through the high heat by voicing an epic WWE-esque speech that made Stone Cold Steve Austin smile. The Thunder rewarded Williams for his development with a three-year, $24 million contract extension a week later. For outsiders, to see somebody who only played 14 minutes in the NBA Finals was a little puzzling. But anybody who followed the NBA champion understands his value. Sam Presti told two stories in his 2024-25 end-of-season press conference about Williams. You usually don't get such in-depth answers about a team's third-string center, but the 23-year-old's affectionate personality refuses to pigeonhole him in such a micro-role. The first involved a morning shootaround. The Thunder were set to face the Philadelphia 76ers. They typically hold their shootarounds at the opposition's arena when on the road. That meant they went to Wells Fargo Center a few hours before tip. Presti noted that Williams kept the mood upbeat. He fought against the elements as the indoor temperature rivaled the outside. Which is quite a statement considering how cold it can get in Philly. He helped his teammates forget about the freezing temperature. "I just think he's a unique guy," Presti said about Williams. "He's a source of energy." The other story was the one that stuck out to most. Presti wind the clock back to November. After suffering a hip fracture that cost him three months, Chet Holmgren slammed his hand in frustration and pain. As most know, the 23-year-old took a while to get up. Once you realized Holmgren couldn't get off the floor without help, everybody in the arena went as quiet as a funeral. The lasting image of the seven-footer's injury was being helped off the floor by Isaiah Hartenstein and Williams. In a sick twist of irony, they were both also out dealing with their own injuries. Hartenstein with a hand fracture and Williams with a hamstring strain. While the public saw the beginnings of that group's time together, Presti revealed more details on how Hartenstein and Williams stayed by Holmgren's side inside the tunnels and away from the cameras during another career low point. "In all my years doing this, I've never, ever seen a player in that much pain. I mean, it was really tough. Hart and J-Will stayed with him the whole time in the back, and it was uncomfortable," Presti said. "It was uncomfortable because when someone is in that much pain, it's hard to be a bystander." Presti said Holmgren couldn't even sit down properly because of the amount of pain he was in. A hip fracture is about as bad as it gets. Any 9th-grade biology class will teach that to you. Hartenstein and Williams stayed by his side until he eventually left the arena to go to the hospital. "Those guys were both injured at the time. It was the greatest act of team support and teammate support I had ever seen. I don't know that it will ever be matched," Presti said. "They sat with him. They supported him." Despite a shakiness in his role, Williams remains a positive force on the Thunder. Those are the type of intangibles you can't see. As cheesy as it might be to outsiders, the 23-year-old's warm energy helped OKC win off the court, too.
