Man arrested after rats released near Sheffield mosque
A man has been arrested for racism offences after rats were released near a mosque in Sheffield, according to police.South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to Grimesthorpe Road in Burngreave just after 20:15 BST on Monday to reports a man had stopped at the side of the road and released three rats from the boot of a vehicle.A 66-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of a racially or religiously aggravated public order offence had since been released on police bail, a force spokesperson said.Inquiries into the incident would continue over the coming days, they added.
Insp Alec Gibbons, of the North East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We understand this reported incident has caused concern locally and I'd like to reassure you that we are working hard to understand the full circumstances of what took place."I'd urge anyone who has information which has not yet been reported to police to contact us online or by calling 101."

Girl, 7, dies after tree collapses at park in Southend
One girl has died and another is in a critical condition after a tree partially collapsed at a park in Essex. The girls, aged seven and six, suffered serious injuries when they were among a number of children caught beneath the tree at Chalkwell Park in Southend. Essex Police confirmed the seven-year-old girl died in hospital and her family are receiving support from specialist officers. Three other children suffered minor injuries following the incident. An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 2.55pm to reports that a tree had fallen in Chalkwell Park in Chalkwell. "Six ambulances, three ambulance officer vehicles, the London Air Ambulance and Kent Air Ambulance were sent to the scene. Police said an investigation is continuing into what caused the tree to collapse. 'Unimaginable hardship' for families Chief Superintendent Leighton Hammett said: "Families are facing unimaginable hardship this evening and all of our thoughts are with them at this time. "I cannot begin to put into words how difficult today's events have been, and continue to be, for them. "It's also not lost on me how traumatic it must have been for the members of the public who witnessed this awful incident. "Across a matter of moments, many of them went from enjoying the warm summer weather to rushing to the aid of strangers without a second thought." Chief Sup Hammett also paid tribute to police, ambulance and fire crews who "did all they could," adding that "today's loss is one they will all take personally". FINES issued to firms that illegally employ asylum seekers have plunged by a third — despite migrants in the black market soaring to all-time highs. There were 2,171 penalties worth a total of £110.8million in the year to the end of March. 1 That is down 30 per cent from the record high of 3,089 issued in 2016, Home Office figures show. In the last three months of 2024, 35 car wash companies were fined a combined total of £2.95million. But officials now fear companies fined for failing to employ legal staff are simply dissolving instead. Directors are then starting new firms with different names, that inherit none of the legal liability to pay the cash back. Last year, Booom Car Wash Limited, near Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, in North London, was ordered to pay £180,000 for illegally employing four staff. Companies House shows it dissolved on December 6, before it even paid a penny. Golden Hand Car Wash Limited, based in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, is currently in the process of closing only months after a £120,000 fine.
