Why actor and comedian Griff Rhys Jones wants to preserve a Norfolk Kwik Fit garage
The actor and comedian Griff Rhys Jones is warning that one of the oldest reinforced concrete buildings in Britain is under threat unless it is better protected.
The building, 33-39 St James Street in King's Lynn, is currently a Kwik Fit garage and has been added to this year's Top Ten Endangered Buildings List, which highlights buildings under threat.
According to the Victorian Society, the building is an "extraordinary example of modernist design and concrete construction".
The society's president Griff Rhys Jones said, "It's extraordinary, it's a very early modernist building, and as such it might be of European significance."
The Grade II-listed building, built in 1908, was designed by Norfolk-based architect A.F. Scott.
It was listed in 2019 on the advice of Historic England and because of its clean lines and lack of decoration, it is considered a precursor to the post-First World War European Functionalism movement.
Scott had already designed the now-demolished Chamberlin's factory in Norwich in 1903, which was the first reinforced concrete building in East Anglia.
His great-granddaughter, Judith Merrill said that Scott was "very much one of his kind."
"He was an individualist" she said.
"He rode a bicycle - it's said he had the first pneumatic tyres in Norwich and cycled miles around Norfolk in them.
"He was well ahead of his time, and it needs preserving, because once it's gone, it's gone forever."
The St James Street building is now leased by Kwik Fit, although according to the Victorian Society a large part of the building is in long-term disuse and deterioration.
The society is now urging the investment company which owns the building to take action to protect it.
'This bold and brilliant building is an unheralded but pioneering example of early modernism" said the society's director, James Hughes.
"It deserves urgent attention, not just to preserve its fabric, but to celebrate its place in European architectural history," he added.
A spokesperson for Kwik Fit said the building is "structurally sound" based on inspections which are carried out at least once a month.
"Naturally we would prefer the property to be fully utilised, but our operations don't require the entire building," they added.
"We have attempted to let out the space we do not use.

We have really settled, we already knew so many people and everyone has been so welcoming. We both mainly work from home so we could do this. "The children went to school at Ysgol Rhoscolyn and two years later are now fluent in Welsh, we are trying with our Welsh too. We love it here but while the apartment was fantastic for holidays it is too small now the children are growing up. Our eldest now wants his own room. We will be sad to leave and if it was just me and John we would be staying here." On picking this way to sell the house, Jennie, who works in home decor and helps manage a holiday property, added: 'I realise this is quite unorthodox, but that's what we love about it - imagine winning a home in the most idyllic place for a fiver - it's a life changing chance for someone!" She wants local businesses to get involved in the promotion as they can get a 75p cut in each raffle ticket sold with no cost to themselves. In total the couple need to sell 150,000 tickets for the sale to go through. This would raise a total of £750,000 but Jennie that is not what they would receive. She said: "There are a lot of costs to pay, we will do the stamp duty, potentially for a second home purchase, and the legal costs, Raffall get 10% and then we have significant marketing costs for all of this. Also when we have affiliates selling tickets they get that 75p cut per ticket. "There is a lot of marketing needed to get the sales and we have to be careful not to overspend or this could end up costing us. We started this two weeks ago and so far we have had 4,500 sales." She added: "This really is a once in a lifetime chance for people to live or holiday in a magical place by the sea. "We're only moving round the corner as we love it so much in Rhoscolyn, so we can't wait to see our home enjoyed by a new family and for them to build their own memories here.' On the property, Raffall said: "The two bedroomed coastal haven, worth £325,000 is the definition of modern elegance with an open-plan kitchen and dining area ideal for entertaining and the stylish dining-living space a perfect place to relax. "The property also features a family bathroom, downstairs WC, balcony, private garage and shared garden. Properties in Rhoscolyn are few and far between with the competition offering a rare opportunity for someone to get on the property ladder in this sought after location which has a population of just 542 residents." Property raffles like have become more common in the UK in recent years although don't end with the home changing hands at the end due to the ticket sales target not being met.

Foreign YouTube stars secretly paid by UK Government for 'propaganda'
A three-year investigation by Declassified UK has found that online influencers are made to sign legal contracts banning them from disclosing the government's involvement. "Feedback" on each video is given by Whitehall officials before the influencers are allowed to publish them. London-based media agency, Zinc Network Ltd – co-founded by a former Conservative Party spin doctor – is heading up the work on behalf of the Foreign Office in a deal worth nearly £10 million of public money. READ MORE: UK ministers told to increase Scottish Government borrowing limits Zinc has won lucrative contracts from the UK, US and Australian governments. Speaking to Declassified, one former employee described Zinc's work as 'state propaganda' and accused it of interference in foreign elections. Another said the relationship with some online influencers was 'extremely exploitative'. In recent years the company has recruited hundreds of internet celebrities for various clients, particularly in central and eastern Europe. Influencers are instructed to sign non-disclosure agreements prior to being told about Foreign Office involvement, so anyone watching their videos would have no idea they had been funded and signed-off by UK Government officials. The work has included a campaign to mobilise young voters in the 2023 Slovakian elections. That election was ultimately won by Robert Fico's left-wing nationalist Smer party, which is seen as being 'pro-Russian'. One former employee said that, by targeting younger voters, Zinc Network's campaign amounted to 'interference in a sovereign country's internal affairs'. Rules set out by the UK's Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) say: 'If an influencer is paid in any form… and the brand has shared control over the content, the post must be obviously identifiable as an ad.' The rules go on to say that 'ads mustn't materially mislead by omitting the identity of the marketer.' In 2022, Zinc signed a £9,450,000 contract with the Foreign Office, which is due to end in December this year. Usually, large contracts are published in full on the government's website, but in this instance the contract was kept secret. For almost two years, the Foreign Office tried to prevent it from being released under the Freedom of Information Act, leading to three separate reprimands from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) who ruled in favour of transparency each time. A heavily redacted version of the contract was eventually disclosed, although the ICO is now assessing a fresh complaint over the Foreign Office's refusal to release the document's full annexes. The documents show that Zinc was contracted to help counter disinformation in 22 countries across Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, and in the Baltics. They say: "This project fits within wider 30-year UK Government objectives, to provide balanced, independent voices to more people in the regions.' In a response to a parliamentary question about Zinc last month, the government admitted it 'provides feedback on videos for social media' to 'ensure alignment with overarching project objectives, and conflict and gender sensitivity criteria'. However, the statement added: 'Due to the risks posed to our partners and beneficiaries of these projects we do not publish detailed information about them.' Responding to the investigation, a Foreign Office spokesperson said: 'The UK will always champion truth and democratic values. Working with partner governments, we use a range of efforts to resist and rebut disinformation spread by those that wish to target the British people and our allies. 'As part of this important work, we collaborate with commercial organisations, independent media outlets and civil society to combat manipulation and interference in democratic participation.' Zinc said in a statement: "Zinc Network is proud of our work helping civil society push back against hostile Russian influence, especially given the destruction being wrought on Ukraine. We operate within all applicable legislation and our own ethical frameworks around transparency and duty of care, as reviewed by an independent media ethicist."

EXCLUSIVE 'We came here for our escape and things went wrong': How couple's dream of a quieter life that featured on Escape To The Country descended into tragedy
It was meant to be a fresh start in the idyllic Norfolk countryside for Emma Izzard – a new chapter filled with clean air, peaceful days and hope for the future. But the charity worker who once appeared on the BBC 's Escape to the Country in pursuit of that dream has tragically died, after a secret battle with alcoholism spiralled beyond her control. Emma, 53, featured on the popular property show in 2021 alongside her then partner, Kym Lofthouse, as the pair searched for a 'slower pace of life' away from the hustle of their home in Luton. Guided by presenter Ginny Buckley, the couple were filmed touring charming homes dotted across Norfolk – eventually settling in the market town of North Walsham. Though they later separated, the two women remained close. An inquest last week at Norfolk Coroner's Court heard how Emma's promising new life soon began to unravel. Behind closed doors, she was struggling with alcohol addiction – a fight that intensified following a devastating personal blow. Speaking at her home in a village outside North Walsham, Kym Lofthouse reflected on the painful irony of Emma's broken dream, telling MailOnline: 'We came here for our escape and things went wrong.' It had been an exciting time when the couple decided to go on TV to find their new home in the country. Kym, a former soldier who went to school in Suffolk, had Tweeted in September 2020: 'It's a wrap! Filming complete and what an amazing few days working with the Escape to the Country team'. But last week she chronicled Emma's tragic demise before the coroner. '[Emma's] alcohol levels increased when her mother was taken to hospital in July 2022, and she thought she was going to lose her,' she told the hearing, according to The Eastern Daily Press. 'After six months of secret drinking, she wanted to stop but couldn't get the help required quickly enough and began drinking again.' Despite multiple attempts at rehab, the court was told, Emma relapsed each time. 'Emma did not want to drink but it had taken a strong hold of her,' Ms Lofthouse added. And her mother, who had died shortly before Miss Izzard's own passing, struggled with mental ill health – something Miss Izzard supported her with. Miss Lofthouse added: 'Emma had a very strong bond with her mother. 'Emma lived with her for many years and continued to look after her even when she did move out.' On 19 November last year, Emma was rushed by ambulance to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after she began vomiting blood at her home. The following day, she suffered a cardiac arrest during a medical procedure known as a gastroscopy. Doctors were unable to save her. Her cause of death was recorded as an oesophageal and variceal bleed, with alcohol-related liver disease. Coroner Johanna Thompson concluded that Ms Izzard's death was alcohol-related, noting a 'history of excess alcohol consumption'. She said the 53-year-old had presented to hospital with 'symptoms of acute alcohol withdrawal' and, despite best efforts, her condition could not be reversed. Tragically, the court also heard how Emma's father – who died when she was still a teenager – had also struggled with alcoholism, casting a long shadow over her life. When the couple first moved to Norfolk, Emma's Facebook posts were full of enthusiasm over the new life they had found, and she changed her profile photo to one of her standing, arms aloft on a paddle board. On her 50th birthday in July 2021, she posted: 'Wow what an amazing couple of weeks celebrating my 50th. Thank you for all my FB messages and to all my lovely friends who travelled to Norfolk to help me celebrate, ❤️ߒ?❤️It's been the best. 'Looking forward to more friends coming to celebrate over the next month. How long can I drag this out for Kym Lofthouse.' And in September of that year, she told how the pair had 'christened the new kayaks today in the beautiful Norfolk sunshine. Loved every minute of it.' After their amicable separation, Emma remained in North Walsham and bought a modest semi-detached home on a quiet housing estate. Neighbours recalled a woman determined to rebuild her life. Mark Sowerbutts, 66, who moved into the same street just a week before Emma, told the Mail: 'I remember when she moved in. She gave me a potted history of what had happened. 'She said she had split up with her partner, quite amicably.' Mr Sowerbutts said Emma threw herself into getting the house set up. 'She was just 100 per cent getting moved in here and getting things sorted out. 'She seemed totally gung-ho about getting things organised,' he said. 'She had bought a BBQ and I helped her bring it around.' He also recalled a woman who appeared cheerful and upbeat – and gave no indication of the demons she was battling privately. 'She never gave the impression she had alcohol problems,' he said. 'She moved here from somewhere local. She seemed fairly cheerful. She was getting really into the swing of things. 'It was quite a shock [to find out she'd died]. She seemed to be getting on with her life fairly well, so it was a shock.' Mr Sowerbutts also described a regular visitor to the home – a woman believed to be Kym – who would arrive periodically with a dog the pair still shared. 'A woman used to come and visit her. She used to say they had shared ownership of a dog and periodically the woman would come and bring the dog and the dog would stay a day or two,' he added. But behind the façade of a new beginning, Emma's struggles persisted – worsened by grief, isolation, and a battle for support that came too late.
