Laura Dahlmeier, German Olympic biathlon champion, dies in Pakistan mountaineering accident

Express Tribune6 days ago
German Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier has died at the age of 31 following a tragic mountaineering accident in northern Pakistan.
Her management confirmed on Wednesday that the former biathlete was struck by falling rocks while ascending Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday, July 28.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the incident occurred at around noon at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters in the remote Hushe Valley region of Gilgit-Baltistan. Dahlmeier was climbing with her mountaineering partner Marina Eva, who survived and sent a distress signal after being unable to rescue Dahlmeier due to dangerous terrain and ongoing rockfall. She later descended to base camp with the help of local rescuers.
Authorities launched a rescue mission immediately, with Pakistani military helicopters on standby. However, worsening weather conditions, including low visibility and heavy monsoon rains, prevented aerial access to the accident site. Local climbers, including two Americans attempting the same route, also tried to assist. Dahlmeier's management said her injuries were likely fatal on impact.
In accordance with Dahlmeier's documented wishes, no one was to risk their life to recover her body. 'It was Laura's express and written will,' her team said. 'She wanted to remain on the mountain if something happened.' Her family has thanked the rescue teams for their efforts and asked that her wishes be respected.
Dahlmeier, who retired from professional biathlon in 2019 at age 25, was widely celebrated for her athletic achievements. She won two gold medals and a bronze at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and accumulated a total of 15 medals at the Biathlon World Championships. After retirement, she became a certified mountain and ski guide and volunteered with mountain rescue services.
German leaders and sports organizations paid tribute to Dahlmeier, describing her as a national icon and an ambassador for sports and nature. President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised her as a 'role model for peaceful and fair coexistence,' while the German Olympic Sports Confederation highlighted her 'dedication, passion, and legacy beyond medals.'
Dahlmeier had been in Pakistan since late June and had recently climbed the Great Trango Tower prior to her final ascent.

Wirtz's creativity can make up for Alexander-Arnold loss, says Liverpool boss Slot

Trent Alexander-Arnold's departure to Real Madrid has left Liverpool wanting for creativity but the signing of attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz can help offset that deficiency, the Premier League club's manager Arne Slot said. Liverpool smashed their transfer record in June to sign Wirtz and bolster their attacking options, with the German international having scored 57 goals and provided 65 assists in 197 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz played in a Liverpool shirt for the first time at Anfield on Monday, putting in an impressive performance in the Merseyside club's 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in a pre-season match. 'I think there's always room for improvement in every department. Like I said, we've added a few, in my opinion, extra weapons. So, Florian (Wirtz) has a lot of creativity in the final third,' Slot told reporters. 'We've lost with Trent (Alexander-Arnold) a lot of creativity from the back. Trent's crosses and picking out runners was so special – I think Flo has this quality as well in a totally different position. 'But he brings that creativity, the pace of Hugo (Ekitike), the pace of both full-backs – Milos (Kerkez) and Jeremie (Frimpong) today.' Inter Miami calls Lionel Messi's leg injury 'minor' Liverpool, who won the Premier League to secure a record-equalling 20th English title, have been busy in the transfer market as they look to build on last season's success. Slot said it was crucial to strengthen the squad. 'Our competitors are not sitting still,' he added. 'Not only they try to improve as well but they have also made a lot of signings, like we all have done. So that's why it's going to be a very interesting Premier League in the upcoming year again.' Liverpool take on FA Cup winners Crystal Palace in the Community Shield on August 10, before beginning their Premier League title defence against Bournemouth at Anfield on August 15.

Alexander Zverev fights back to oust defending champion Popyrin from Canadian Open

Alexander Zverev rallied from a set down to beat defending champion Alexei Popyrin 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3 in Toronto and move into the semi-finals of the Canadian Open on Monday. Top seed Zverev was unable to convert two set points in a tight first set, but built up 3-0 leads in both the second and third sets to clinch the win in two hours and 42 minutes. The victory took the German's head-to-head record against Australian Popyrin to 4-0 and sent him to his 75th semi-final on the ATP Tour, joining Novak Djokovic as the only active men's tennis player to have reached the mark. 'I had to tell myself, even though I lost the first set, I thought we were both playing actually quite well,' said Zverev, who won the Canadian Open in 2017. 'I had to find a return position in the beginning because he's a very big server, and when he gets into a rhythm, it's very difficult against him. 'I did that in the second and third set. Honestly, I can't complain about much. I played one loose game on my serve in the second set, but apart from that, it was pretty good.' Zverev next faces Russian Karen Khachanov, who beat Alex Michelsen of the United States 6-4 7-6(3). Mboko's run continues Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko stormed into the semi-finals of the women's tournament in Montreal with a 6-4 6-2 win over Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro to continue her fairytale run. The 18-year-old, ranked 85th in the world, found herself a break down early in the second set, but won six straight games to become the first Canadian to reach the semi-finals of the Canadian Open since 2019. 'I'm so excited to be in the semi-final here. I want to thank everyone for your support once again. It has been unreal,' said Mboko, who beat No. 1 seed Coco Gauff on Saturday and is set to enter the top 50. Mboko next takes on Elena Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion, who was leading 6-1 2-1 when her opponent, Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, was forced to retire from their quarter-final match due to a wrist injury. Rybakina will meet Mboko for the second time in as many weeks, with the ninth-seeded Kazakh winning 6-3 7-5 when the pair faced off in the Washington Open last month.
