Best Virginia survives, sets up TBT showdown with Herd That

Dominion Posta day ago
MORGANTOWN — Best Virginia squandered a 17-point lead to begin the fourth quarter and had to pull off a mini-comeback Friday night to pull off a 72-69 over DuBois (Pa.) Dream in the opening round of TBT.
Toby Okani sank two free throws to end the game inside the Charleston Coliseum, but the WVU alumni team, seeded third in the West Virginia Regional, had to overcome a 69-65 deficit in the final moments to do so.
BOX SCORE
The victory sets up another meeting against Marshall's alumni team, Herd That, at 5 p.m. Sunday (FS1).
Herd That — the No. 2 seed in the region — beat SIKH Warriors, 84-71, in the opening round.
Best Virginia led 62-45 heading into the fourth quarter, but that's when disaster struck.
It turned the ball over six times and made just one basket before the Elam Ending was set up.
By that time, Dubois Dream had closed to within 64-60 — the target score was 72 points — and took a 69-65 lead after a dunk from Shane Hunter.
Best Virginia's Tre Mitchell scored off a turnover and then took a 70-69 lead from a free throw by Kedrian Johnson and lay-up from Mitchell.
The Dream went for the win with a 3-point attempt that came up short and Okani was fouled and went to the line for the win.
A 57.3% free-throw shooter during his one season at WVU in 2024-25, Okani calmly sank both free throws for the win.
'Survive and advance sometimes is pretty and sometimes is ugly,' Best Virginia head coach Jarrod West said. 'All of our downfalls and negative plays they created, so you have to give them all the credit. But if we win five more games like that, we walk away with $1 million. To these guys' credit, they're dogs.'
James Reese, who played collegiately for Buffalo, North Texas and South Carolina, led Best Virginia with 21 points on 8 of 19 shooting.
Mitchell added 13 points and Okani had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Best Virginia shot 40% (26 of 65) for the game and turned the ball over 35 times.
Jacorey Williams, a former Conference USA Player of the Year while at Middle Tennessee State, scored 29 points and added 10 rebounds to lead Herd That to the second round.
Williams began his college career at Arkansas, but landed at Middle Tennessee State after being dismissed from the Razorbacks.
Herd That came away with a 46-34 edge on the glass with Derek Cooke Jr. adding eight points and 11 rebounds.
Jean Pierre Tokoto added 18 points for Herd That.

Young Thunder Champ Sheds Light on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Leadership Style

Oklahoma City Thunder All-NBA First Team point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a banner year in 2024-25, earning his first MVP award while leading his team to a 68-14 record and its first post-Seattle SuperSonics championship. In a fresh conversation with Sportskeeda's Mark Medina, young shooting guard Ajay Mitchell spoke about learning from Gilgeous-Alexander and some of Oklahoma City's other great vets during his eventful 2024-25 season, which ended in a title. Mitchell was occasionally trotted out in spot playoff minutes during the postseason, although the former No. 38 pick in the 2024 draft wasn't a night-in, night-out contender. Mitchell reflected on Gilgeous-Alexander's preferred leadership style. "I think the way he leads [is] by the way he acts. Seeing him in the gym after practice and before practice, and the way he takes care of his body," Mitchell said. "It's just the way he's consistent throughout everything. For young players like us, it's really important to have leaders like that and see how they go about the game. It really helped me just learn from him, not only just asking questions. But looking at what he does and looking at the way he acts really helps." Mitchell, who has plenty of defensive upside, spoke glowingly about what he's been able to glean from All-Defensive Team Thunder wings Jalen Williams, Luguentz Dort, and Alex Caruso. "They're great defenders. They're the best defenders in the league," Mitchell raved. "Seeing how they go about the game, for me it was the way they watched film. I think it was kind of different than in college. There, we just watch film. But they were really pointing on the guys they were going to guard. It's the way the game is so slow for them on defense, the way they can make reads and be playmakers on defense, I think that's a big part of it. It's not just about guarding your guys, but being able to make defensive plays. They can read players and get steals. The way they go about defense is amazing. There is a lot to learn from." Carmen's Crew opens title defense of TBT with win over GoTime Green Machine

The Ohio State alumi basketball team known as "Carmen's Crew," started its defense of its TBT (The Basketball Tournament) championship by winning its first matchup in the tournament over No. 8 seed GoTime Green Machine, 78-67 in Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Sunday. The win came in a different way than years past. Two non-Buckeyes led Carmen's Crew, with Scott Thomas leading the way with 20 points, including three shots from beyond the arc to pace the way. Thomas played for Bowling Green in college. The second-leading scorer was also a player without ties to Ohio State, guard Jamel Morris (from Fairmont State), who poured in 13 points. The game was close in the first half, with the lead going back and forth. GoTime Green led 21-19 after the first quarter. Carmen's Crew found the mark from three-point range in the second quarter, hitting five triples to take a 42-36 lead at halftime. The Ohio State alums took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring GoTime Green 24-17 in the period to take a 66-53 lead heading to the fourth quarter. Camen's Crew couldn't quite put away GoTime Green in the fourth, allowing things to tighten up all the way to 66-61 and then 69-63 when the Elam Ending was activated. From there, Carmen's Crew made fairly quick work of things, winning on a Jamel Morris layup. Only one former Buckeye played in the first game, and it was Keyshawn Woods, who contributed seven points and four rebounds. William Buford, Trevor Thompson, and Kaleb Wesson did not play. We'll see if that continues going forward, most likely not. Carmen's Crew will be back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. ET against the winner of Locked In Elite and Fort Wayne Champs.
