Chelsea's Club World Cup campaign gets underway this evening as they face LAFC in Atlanta, and Enzo Maresca's squad is under more scrutiny than ever.
While the Blues secured their main objective last season by qualifying for the Champions League and winning the Conference League, it was far from plain sailing and there is work to do ahead of the new campaign.

While Maresca insists Chelsea are chasing silverware in the United States, he may approach this competition as an extension of pre-season. There are several new faces in the squad and some lingering questions that need answering.
Here, Standard Sport breaks down three key issues that Chelsea need to address at the Club World Cup...
Striker conundrum
Nicolas Jackson's claim to the starting striker spot at Chelsea is under pressure.
He finished last season under a cloud, enduring a 14-game goal drought and earning a needless red card which ruled him out of the run-in.
And Liam Delap's £30million arrival from Ipswich means Jackson will face serious competition for his position next season.

The situation could yet get worse for the Senegalese, as the Blues look to add another No9 this summer.

After Maresca confirmed the striker role remains up for grabs, it feels like a big summer for Jackson, while Delap will be out to impress.
Goalkeeper spot
Chelsea's goalkeeper situation has been the butt of many jokes in recent weeks.
Four shot-stoppers were named in their squad for the Club World Cup, but they still looked to sign AC Milan's Mike Maignan last week.
Neither Robert Sanchez nor Filip Jorgensen laid a convincing claim to the No1 shirt last season, and now face competition from highly-rated youngsters Mike Penders and Gaga Slonina, while a new goalkeeper could yet join.
Chelsea will enter next season as title hopefuls. To have any hope of making that dream reality, a quality first-choice goalkeeper is a must.

Sanchez, who finished last season in reasonable form, has been handed the No1 shirt for now, but whether he can live up to it remains to be seen. With plenty of understudies waiting in the wings, there is no room for error.

Andrey Santos
Of the countless wonderkids to have been signed by Chelsea and sent away on loan since Todd Boehly's takeover, few are as hotly anticipated as midfielder Andrey Santos.
The 21-year-old Brazil international spent last season at Strasbourg and impressed as the club narrowly missed out on European qualification.
He will play his first competitive minutes for Chelsea this summer, but faces the unenviable task of unseating one of Chelsea's current midfield core - the £274.8m trio of Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, and Romeo Lavia.

Santos is far too good to sit on the bench, and knows it - he will not be content to play second fiddle to Maresca's stalwarts.
It is a nice problem for the Chelsea boss to have, choosing between four top-class midfielders, but it must be solved this summer.

Chelsea boss Maresca will let Neto decide whether to play following Jota tragedy

Enzo Maresca will let Pedro Neto decide if he is in the right frame of mind to play for Chelsea in Friday's Club World Cup quarterfinal clash against Palmeiras, after the tragic death of his international team-mate Diogo Jota. 'He's very sad,' manager Maresca said of Neto at his pre-match press conference in Philadelphia on Thursday. 'More than sad, but we are also close to Pedro to support him in this moment. Advertisement 'It's completely Pedro's decision (if he wants to play). I had a chat this morning with Pedro and we support him. Whatever decision he will take, it is the correct one and we are going to support him in any case, so it doesn't matter if he will be on the pitch. We will see how he is feeling tomorrow.' Liverpool's Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, were killed in a car accident in Spain when their vehicle veered off a road and burst into flames near the Spanish city of Zamora, according to police. Jota is succeeded by his wife Rute Cardoso – the pair married just weeks ago – and three children. Elsewhere in the Chelsea squad, Romeo Lavia remains a fitness doubt but Maresca will give every chance to the 21-year old — particularly when considering that fellow midfielder Moises Caicedo is suspended for the clash at Lincoln Financial Field. 'Romeo, we're not sure if he can be fit — we're going to try tomorrow,' Maresca revealed. 'He had small problems at the end of the last game against Benfica, it's just a muscle problem. As I said, tomorrow we'll see if he's fit, but if not we're going to have to find different solutions because Moises is suspended.' New £50million signing Joao Pedro has integrated with the squad well since arriving in the United States, and Maresca did not rule out the possibility of handing minutes to the Brazilian international if the opportunity was there. 'Joao's situation is a bit strange, or different, because he was on holiday,' Maresca said. 'He was working (on holiday), but it's not the same when you work for yourself compared with when you work for the team. But we are really happy with Joao, the last two days he played with us — we will see if we need him. If we have a chance to give him some minutes, we will give him some minutes.' Chelsea will also come up against one of their future players in Palmeiras' teenage starlet Estevao. However, Maresca was keen to ensure that Chelsea remain focused in their preparation against Abel Ferreira's side rather than singling out any particular individual. Advertisement 'When we prepare games, we think about the team, not the players on the other side — and we have done exactly the same for this game,' Maresca said. 'We prepare the game for Palmeiras not against Estevao.' 'In this moment he is a Palmeiras player and he is going to play against Chelsea tomorrow. The only thing we are focused on is doing our best to beat Palmeiras and not beating Estevao.' Chelsea needed extra-time to get past Benfica in a weather-delayed round of 16 contest, but has landed in what can fairly be considered the easier half of the draw. Victory over Palmeiras would set up a semifinal against either Fluminense or Al Hilal on Tuesday.

Alexander-Arnold settling in as Real Madrid target Club World Cup glory

Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is finding his footing at the club as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund (CHARLY TRIBALLEAU) Real Madrid paid extra to bring defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in early from Liverpool to compete in the Club World Cup and it is paying off as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals. The England international created the only goal of the game for Gonzalo Garcia as Xabi Alonso's side beat Italian giants Juventus 1-0 in the last 16. Advertisement With Alonso moving to a back three as soon as he had the personnel available, Alexander-Arnold has benefitted from playing as a right wing-back in their last two matches. That is where he is set to continue against German outfit Dortmund in New Jersey on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium. Alexander-Arnold's floated cross for Gonzalo against Juventus was the precise kind of attacking output that led Madrid to bring him in. "He could have had many more assists already," said Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. "In training, he is horrible to play against. His corner kicks are another level. Advertisement "I don't think I have seen a guy like this with such quality. As a goalkeeper it is a nightmare, but it will help make me better." Madrid skipper Dani Carvajal is back from a long-term injury but may end up being used more as a centre-back than in the wing-back position now that Alexander-Arnold has arrived. Los Blancos paid as much as 10 million euros ($11.75 million) according to reports to sign the 26-year-old a month before his Liverpool deal expired, but have already made approximately 54 million euros for reaching the Club World Cup quarter-finals. After struggling a little at right-back against Al Hilal in Madrid's opening 1-1 draw, Alexander-Arnold has steadily improved. Advertisement Manchester City's 4-3 defeat by the Saudi Arabian club showed in hindsight the defender's problems were not entirely of his own making. - Repeat with a twist - As well as beating Dortmund in the 2024 Champions League final, Madrid came from two goals behind to thrash them 5-2 this season in the group phase of the same competition. However both teams have changed significantly since then. They have new coaches, in the newly-appointed Alonso and Dortmund's Niko Kovac, who has done a fine job since arriving in January, helping them secure qualification for next season's Champions League. Advertisement Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen's arrivals have shaken up Madrid's defence, while Borussia Dortmund brought in Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. However the midfielder's yellow card against Monterrey in the 2-1 last 16 win means he is suspended for the clash against Madrid and will therefore not face his older brother Jude Bellingham. Madrid's French striker Kylian Mbappe did not score in the rout of Dortmund in October amid a crisis of confidence, but since then has found top form. After returning from a stomach bug as a substitute against Juventus, Mbappe will be keen to start against the Bundesliga side and add to his tally of 43 goals. Advertisement The former Paris Saint-Germain star, who is on a collision course with his former club in the semi-finals should they both progress, could come in for Gonzalo, despite the 21-year-old scoring three goals at the tournament. "It's inexplicable," said the forward, whom Alonso compared to former Madrid great Raul, saying Gonzalo had some of the same qualities. "I saw a great ball coming in from Trent, I saw Rudiger didn't get to it and I said to myself, 'this is mine!'" added Gonzalo of his goal against Juventus. Alonso, who arrived at Madrid from Bayer Leverkusen, will take on his former Bundesliga rivals Dortmund. Advertisement "We know (him) very well, he worked two and a half years in Germany, and he did a fantastic job," said Kovac. "Now he's implementing everything he had in Leverkusen at Real Madrid. So we're expecting the same what we had in Leverkusen, only with different players. "We're looking forward to it but you have to play football for 90 minutes, and if we put everything onto the pitch, the same performance as we saw (against Monterrey), I think that we will have a good chance." rbs/ea

'Family comes first': Liam Martin withdraws from rep games to be by partner's side

Liam Martin has revealed he'll step down from consideration for the Kangaroos' end-of-season Ashes series in England because fiancée Chelsea is due to give birth around that time. Australia will play three Test matches against the Old Enemy in the revamped Ashes series in October and November, but Panthers and NSW star Martin won't be involved. Martin told the on Thursday he'll be staying home in Australia for the birth of his first child. 'We're due in October – I'm pretty excited – but it means I'll probably have to pull out of the Ashes,' Martin said. 'Given it's the first baby, I don't want to miss it. If it was in Australia, I'd definitely play, but given it's on the other side of the world, Chelsea could divorce me before we're even married. Martin missed last year's Pacific Championships tournament due to a shoulder injury, but has been a walk-up starter for the Kangaroos whenever he's been available. He admitted he hadn't told anyone in the Kangaroos hierarchy because the national team is currently without a coach. "I love pulling on that green and gold jersey, but family comes first, so I made the decision early on," he added. 'You hear the boys with kids speak about life having extra meaning after [having kids], and who you play the game for. It's been in the back of my mind this year how I'll need to try and leave a legacy for the family that they can be proud of.' Making Martin's decision easier is the uncertainty surrounding the Ashes series. Mal Meninga was forced to step down as Kangaroos coach when he agreed to take on the Perth Bears job, and Brad Fittler withdrew from contention this week when he was thought to be the front-runner. Fittler then made telling comments that nothing had been organised by ARL officials in terms of accommodation, training facilities and logistical issues, despite the tour being just three months away. Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters now appear to be in a two-horse race to become the next Kangaroos coach, although whispers have emerged that Wayne Bennett could get the job if the NRL breaks it's own rules. The NRL and ARL Commission have always insisted a club or State of Origin coach can't hold the Kangaroos role because it doesn't allow for enough time and focus. But leading reporter Phil Rothfield revealed this week he believes that rule will be broken and Bennett will get the gig. Rothfield said he thinks the Commission will allow Bennett to lead the Kangaroos in a caretaker capacity just for the Ashes series, before appointing a full-time coach after that. Speaking on NRL 360 on Wednesday night, fellow journalist James Hooper said: 'I think they need to get the best candidate in all seriousness, and if that means changing this outdated rule that we can't have a club coach anymore, so be it. I wouldn't have an issue if it was Wayne or Ricky (Stuart) or (Craig) Bellamy." RELATED: Toby Sexton in $1 million club switch to replace premiership hero Another teammate joins Selwyn Cobbo in leaving Broncos Queensland State of Origin stars Harry Grant and Cameron Munster both said this week that Smith would do a great job. But the former Maroons and Kangaroos captain admitted he hadn't heard from anyone about the role.
