A man has been arrested in the thefts of wallets and bank cards from unlocked vehicles at parks in Genesee County, Michigan.
Lester Muex, 48, of Detroit, was arrested after security video at one of the retailers was used to help identify him using a victim's bank card, Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said in a video report. Meux was lodged in the Genesee County jail on six counts of unauthorized use of a financial transaction device, the chief said.
The first incident under investigation happened June 1 at Creasey Bicentennial Park on East Grand Blanc Road. The victim was watching a softball game when a man grabbed a wallet out of his unlocked vehicle. The bank cards were immediately used at a local retail store and gas station.
Renye said police attempted to access security video from both the store and the gas station, but ran into "roadblocks" and delays in getting permission for review of the footage.
"We frequently hear from the public that we're not doing anything with cases ... when in fact we are," he said about the time involved with accessing security images from businesses. "These things take time."
While officers were still working on that investigation, a second incident with similar circumstances was reported.
The second incident happened June 3 at the Henry Ford Genesys Trails in Grand Blanc Township. The victim had left her car doors unlocked, and her wallet was stolen. The suspect used her credit cards at a different retail store.
On this occasion, police were able to get quick access to the business's exterior video, which showed the suspect driving a black, older model pickup truck. Additional security video inside a store gave a view of the potential suspect that police reviewed for leads with facial recognition technology.
"That's where our investigation really took off," the chief said.
Once they had a possible name, they could start looking into which vehicle he might have been driving
The suspect was taken into custody Wednesday without incident after he left a hotel in Chesterfield Township.

Motorcyclist killed after striking disabled car on westbound I-696 in Royal Oak
A 20-year-old Ypsilanti motorcyclist died early Saturday morning when he struck the rear of a disabled vehicle on westbound I-696 in Royal Oak, Michigan State Police said. Troopers say the crash happened around 12:30 a.m. Saturday when a 30-year-old Clio woman driving a BMW was speeding in the left middle lane of a construction zone and rear-ended a Nissan sedan, sending the Nissan to a right shoulder wall where it stopped. The BMW reportedly struck a left median wall before being left disabled under the Campbell Road bridge. A short while later, the Ypsilanti man driving a Suzuki motorcycle was reportedly driving recklessly and speeding in and out of traffic when he struck the disabled BMW and was ejected from his motorcycle, according to police. The man was taken to an area hospital, where he later died. No other injuries were reported. During an investigation, troopers said they smelled alcohol on the driver of the BMW and that she failed field sobriety tests. She was arrested, and charges are pending a review by prosecutors. The freeway was closed for several hours as troopers conducted a crash investigation. "This crash highlighted the dangerous driving behaviors we see causing preventable crashes," said MSP Lt. Mike Shaw in a statement. "We continue to remind drivers to slow down, especially in construction zones, and do not get behind the wheel impaired."

MSP seeks Eaton County woman. Why police say she's endangered
ROXAND TWP. — Michigan State Police are asking for the public's helping in finding a 64-year-old Eaton County woman. Police believe Lisa Lynn Martin left her home in the 700 block of St. Joe Highway in Eaton County's Roxand Township about 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, according to a July 5 social media post. She is considered endangered because she's without necessary medication. Martin was last seen wearing a black T-shirt or blouse, dark-colored shorts, Skecher tennis shoes and eyeglasses, State Police said. Detroit Juvenile Detention Center employee accused of supplying teens with marijuana gummies
A Detroit Juvenile Detention Center employee is accused of giving four 17-year-old boys housed at the center marijuana gummies. Joseph Robinson, 22, of Detroit, is charged with four counts of furnishing a controlled substance (marijuana) to minors and four counts of furnishing contraband to prisoners. Wayne County prosecutors allege that Robinson, while working as a mentor at the facility on Wednesday night, gave gummies to the teens. Fellow employees allegedly noticed the four boys as being "lethargic, incoherent and in an impaired mental state," prosecutors say, and brought them to an area hospital. The teens were released later the same day. Robinson was arrested on Thursday after an investigation by detention center officials. "There is simply no excuse for the defendant's alleged behavior. It is especially reprehensible because the defendant was supposed to be a mentor to the young men housed at the JDF — and not a catalyst for criminal conduct. The result of his actions was the exact opposite of what this volunteer program was designed to be about," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a statement. Robinson is expected to be arraigned Saturday.
