Ali Oliver highlights importance of keeping children active
National School Sports Week is an annual campaign by the Youth Sport Trust, dedicated to celebrating the power of PE, sport, and play to build brighter futures.

Youth Sport Trust CEO Ali Oliver MBE hopes to create awareness of the need for children to be active as she helped to launch National School Sports Week on Monday.
Oliver was at Dame Dorothy Primary School in Sunderland for a day packed with sport and activity as they kicked off the campaign which promotes the importance of daily physical activity by encouraging schools, families, and communities to engage in 60 minutes of PE, sport, and play.

Pupils were involved in a Girls Active session where leaders from the student body taught sessions to younger years and PE classes using National School Sports Week resources.
It marked the start of a week dedicated to bringing attention to the need for children to spend 60 minutes active each day.
'National School Sports Week is an opportunity to shine a light on why it's important children are active and get those important messages across about not just physical health, but social wellbeing in the digital age,' said Oliver.
'Playing together physically is really important for the cognitive benefits, because sadly lots of adults will judge physical education on their own experiences.

'Today's generation is a much more sedentary generation, and it's really important that the school day compensates for some of the time that young people are more sedentary in the rest of their lives.'
The annual campaign highlights and aims to change worrying statistics that indicate children are less active than ever.
Research shows that fewer than half (47%) of children are meeting the Chief Medical Officers' guidelines of engaging in an average of 60 minutes or more of sport and physical activity daily.
In Sunderland, where the week was launched 25% of children in reception are overweight or obese - and over 40% by Year 6.

But the Youth Sport Trust are on a mission to change the direction of travel and transform the lives of young people through sport.
'[We want] to equip educators and empower young people so together they can create brighter futures through the power of play and sport,' explained Oliver.
'We have a wonderful vision, which is a future where every child enjoys the life-changing benefits of PE and sport.
'We also deliver a number of products and services which schools can use to help them think more creatively, whether it's about how they use their playground, or how they make their maths lessons more active.'
National School Sports Week is an annual campaign by the Youth Sport Trust, dedicated to celebrating the power of PE, sport, and play to build brighter futures. This year, powered by Sports Direct x Under Armour, marks the 30th anniversary of the Youth Sport Trust, who is a UK leading children's charity for improving young people's wellbeing through sport and play. How Brighton Forward Became A Target For Two Premier League Rivals
BRIGHTON, ENGLAND - APRIL 12: Joao Pedro of Brighton & Hove Albion celebrates scoring his team's ... More first goal with teammates during the Premier League match between Brighton & Hove Albion FC and Leicester City FC at Amex Stadium on April 12, 2025 in Brighton, England. (Photo by) Joao Pedro enjoyed an excellent 2024/25 season. The Brazilian forward was a key figure for Brighton, registering 16 goals and assists in 27 Premier League appearances. These numbers were enough to attract the attention of Chelsea and Newcastle United with both clubs interested in signing Pedro this summer. Recent reports claim Chelsea and Newcastle have opened talks with Brighton over a move for the 23-year-old. Liverpool has also been mentioned as another club that could get involved in the race to sign Pedro who is ready to take the next step in his development. He is a high-potential attacker. (Photo by FRANCK FIFE / AFP) (Photo by FRANCK FIFE/AFP via Getty Images) Chelsea has already signed Liam Delap this summer with the young Englishman already making an impression for his new team at the 2025 Club World Cup. Newcastle, meanwhile, is intent on strengthening its forward line for the new season. After missing out on Bryan Mbeumo, Pedro has been identified as a target. Pedro isn't just a goal threat in and around the opposition penalty area. Indeed, the 23-year-old is extremely versatile and is comfortable playing a number of different roles across the forward line. Pedro operated as a centre forward for Brighton last season, but also as something of a number 10 behind a focal point up front. This is surely why Chelsea and Newcastle both want Pedro. Both teams already boast top-level centre forwards and so Pedro would be expected to fill in around the likes of Alexander Isak and Delap with Nicolas Jackson also a factor at Stamford Bridge. He would offer a lot of cover in various positions. BRENTFORD, ENGLAND - APRIL 19: Joao Pedro of Brighton & Hove Albion in action during the Premier ... More League match between Brentford FC and Brighton & Hove Albion FC at Gtech Community Stadium on April 19, 2025 in Brentford, England. (Photo by Vince Mignott/) As a modern forward, Pedro ticks a lot of boxes. He is comfortable with the ball at his feet. He can beat an opponent in the dribble. He can finish inside the area, and also outside of it. Pedro is position-less in the way he interprets his role in Brighton's fluid frontline and this makes him a good fit for countless teams at the elite level. Brighton reportedly wants more than £50m for its prize asset, reflecting the value of the Brazilian to the south coast outfit. The Seagulls have a reputation for being one of the smartest clubs in the Premier League and so Pedro will only leave the Amex Stadium if it suits the selling club. Brighton will need to find a replacement. Chelsea and Newcastle would both give Pedro a platform to prove his quality in the Champions League next season. The Brazilian is certainly good enough for this level and might even be targeting a starting place for his national team at the 2026 World Cup. This could be a pivotal summer in Pedro's career.

🎥 Remembering Havertz making his mark in debut Arsenal season
Arsenal's recent Premier League journey remains one of hope despite finishing second-best in three consecutive seasons under Mikel Arteta. Despite growing frustrations surrounding whether or not the club gets over the line in the end, many recent signings have helped the former Gunners midfielder move the needle on the pitch, with Kai Havertz key among them. Advertisement The German international has become an integral cog in the wheel at the Emirates since arriving from league rivals Chelsea on this day two years ago. A former wunderkind at Bayer Leverkusen, the Aachen-born midfielder-come-forward would go on to score 13 goals in the Premier League across an influential debut campaign on the other side of London, with a late winner against Brentford providing proof of his growing importance to the club on the pitch. Havertz rose highest in the box to get on the end of a Ben White cross after the England international was slipped into the box by Martin Ødegaard, with the German cancelling out Yoane Wissa's first-half equaliser after Declan Rice's 19th-minute opener. Advertisement Despite the club's pending movement for a new centre forward in the current summer market, Havertz will no doubt remain vital as the club sets out to achieve its goals. 📸 Richard Heathcote - 2024 Getty Images

Shrewsbury sign Sang from Port Vale
Shrewsbury Town have signed versatile 25-year-old Tom Sang from Port Vale. Sang has signed a two-year deal with the Croud Meadow club, who were relegated to League Two last season after finishing bottom of League One. Advertisement He made 32 appearances for Port Vale as they finished second in League Two to secure promotion last season. The Shrews' director of football Micky Moore said: "Tom is a really good footballer. He started at Manchester United as an attacking midfielder and, like Tom Anderson, Sam Clucas, Sam Stubbs and Will Boyle, he arrives having a promotion on his CV." He added: "He can play and in multiple positions and is also a great person. "His arrival means we now have 18 players in the squad, which I think gives Michael Appleton a great opportunity to get his principles and ideas into the group early."
