Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak takes the flag as Thailand's first FIA F3 winner

Time Out16 hours ago
Motorsport fans are buzzing as Thailand's dream of hosting a Formula 1 race edges closer to reality. But even before the lights go out on that future, there's already something to celebrate as Tasanapol 'Tern' Inthraphuvasak became the first Thai driver to win a race in the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
At the legendary Silverstone Circuit in England, the 19-year-old racer grabbed reverse grid pole position for the Sprint Race on July 5 and led it from start to finish, crossing the line ahead of 29 other drivers to take a victory.
Before his recent triumph, Inthraphuvasak steadily rose through the ranks, starting in karting on his home soil in 2013 and racing across Asia, the U.S. and Europe. He claimed runner-up titles in major karting series by 2017 and debuted in single-seaters in 2021. After winning races in British and Spanish F4 and competing in the 2023 Formula Regional Middle East Championship, he stepped up to FIA Formula 3 in 2024 with AIX, continuing his rapid rise.
While FIA Formula 3 isn't quite at the level of Formula 1, it's an important third-tier international single-seater championship organised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). It plays a crucial role in the 'Road to F1,' giving young, aspiring drivers a platform to develop their skills and showcase their talent as they aim to move up to Formula 2 and eventually the sport's highest tier.
This historic achievement shows that the nation has another rising star alongside Alex Albon, who's already waving the national flag with Williams Racing. In the years ahead, we could see even more Thai drivers joining the grid.

Brit dad dies while pursuing Thai boxing dream just days before wife gives birth

Ryan O'Connor, who was from Lancashire, fell seriously ill while pursuing his lifelong dream of training at a Thai boxing academy - and his family has been left heartbroken A devoted father died alone in Thailand just days before his wife gave birth back home in the UK. Ryan O'Connor, 30, flew to the country for his "last chance" to fulfil a lifelong goal - to train at a Thai boxing academy - before his second baby was born. Tragedy struck just weeks later when he became suddenly unwell, bedridden with severe diarrhoea and what the family suspect was a serious infection. ‌ He managed a video call to his parents on June 26, during which he described his symptoms, but his condition deteriorated minutes after this conversation. Ryan's dad had contacted his hotel to request urgent medical help but, by the time the emergency service personnel had arrived to his room, Ryan had gone into cardiac arrest. ‌ The dad, from Lancashire, died just days before his 31st birthday, and days before his wife Joanne O'Connor gave birth to their baby girl. Ryan leaves behind the newborn, his three-year-old daughter and his partner. Ryan's grieving brother, Liam, said: "If you knew Ryan, you would know he was a great dad and husband. His strength, humour, and warmth have touched so many people. Now it's our turn to rally around him and his family during their darkest hour. ‌ "(Joanne) now faces the unimaginable pain of preparing to bring new life into the world whilst coping with the uncertainty of their future and the devastating knowledge that their new daughter will never meet her father. Riley, the first child who is nearly three, will not see her father again." Medics were unable to restart Ryan's heart on June 26 after his cardiac arrest. The keen boxer was placed on life support in hospital but went into septic shock the following day, with his kidneys failing, and passed away the next morning. Liam has created a GoFundMe fundraiser to help Joanne, who has now been left to raise two young children alone. The campaign aims to help cover mounting costs, including essential living expenses, the possible repatriation of Ryan's remains, medical bills, and longer-term support for the young family. Recalling his brother's trip, Liam told Mail Online: "He just wanted to do it before he had two children. He thought he couldn't go out there before having two children. It was his last chance to go and do something that he's always wanted to do." Liam described Ryan as "loud", "funny" and "my best friend". He continued: "Please consider donating whatever you can and share this page widely. Every donation, no matter how small, would make a huge difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

Culture spokesman Max Wilkinson said: 'For too long, the jewel in the crown of British football has been locked behind an expensive barrier. "It keeps fans out while lining the pockets of broadcasters. 'Fans are being rinsed of every last penny to watch the beautiful game. Danny Rohl's assistant in line to succeed German as new Sheffield Wednesday boss

Danish coach Henrik Pedersen looks set to be Sheffield Wednesday's next manager having agreed a deal to stay at the club despite a backdrop of unmitigated chaos Henrik Pedersen is set to succeed Danny Rohl as boss of crisis club Sheffield Wednesday. The Dane, 47, was Rohl's assistant at Hillsborough as the highly-rated German staged a great escape to keep the club in the Championship before steering the Owls to a top-half finish last term. But things have turned sour with under-fire owner Dejphon Chansiri failing to pay players and staff on time in successive months, leading to a transfer embargo and almost certain points deduction. Wednesday are also in trouble for defaulting on payments to the tax man and to other clubs regarding historic transfer fees. ‌ Despite this, Pedersen is keen to stay in the Steel City after his contract expired at the end of last month having settled in the area with his young family. ‌ Wednesday announced late on Monday night that Pedersen had agreed a deal to stay with the club and would join the players on their pre-season training camp at St George's Park this week. But it's understood that he will step up to become manager when Rohl, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, has finalised a severance package that will rubber-stamp his exit from Hillsborough. Rohl has been linked with jobs at Southampton and Leicester as well as a clutch of positions in his native Germany, but is yet to secure a move elsewhere. ‌ 'When the opportunity presented itself and the chairman asked me to extend my current contract with the club, I didn't hesitate," Pedersen said. 'It's no secret that my family and I have fallen in love with this great club and also this wonderful city that has made us so welcome. The fans are what carries a club through tough games, good times and bad. And our supporters are the best. ‌ 'I'm excited to continue my role at the club and getting back to work supporting the team and working with the great group of players we have. To the fans, I look forward to seeing you all again soon.' Thai tuna magnate Chansiri, meanwhile, has accepted he is in the end game as Owls owner and has agreed to work with a professional group who boast a proven track record of selling football clubs. Chansiri has already rejected at least two bids from a Florida-based consortium of businessmen and professional sportspeople, including Sheffield-born Wednesday fan Adam Shaw who has made his money Stateside. ‌ John Textor, who has recently left Crystal Palace, has also been credited with interest while there are additional glances from the Middle East. But Wednesday are unable to sign any players on more than £7,000-a-week while ever their debts to players, the tax man and other clubs remain. They have also been banned from spending transfer or loan fees for the next three windows. The future of talismanic captain Barry Bannan is also still uncertain having seen his contract expire at the end of last season, though he joined up with the rest of the squad to report for pre-season last week and is with his teammates at St George's Park.
