Captain or Major? After bypoll win, Congress leaders fight over credit
T'puram/Kozhikode: UDF's win in Nilambur has sparked serious differences within the Congress, with senior leader Ramesh Chennithala voicing his displeasure over opposition leader VD Satheesan being praised as the 'captain' of the bypoll victory.
"When I was opposition leader, we won several bypolls. But no one called me a captain," he said. To ease tensions, Satheesan responded, "If I'm called the captain now, then Chennithala is the major of the party."
Chennithala said the party learned a key lesson from Nilambur — unity leads to victory. "In Nilambur, the anti-govt sentiment was strong and people clearly demanded change," he said.
Chennithala also distanced himself from Satheesan's 'Mission 63' plan for the upcoming assembly election.
Satheesan had proposed the strategy to secure 63 winnable seats, but the party hasn't revealed which seats are part of the plan. "Will it be a problem if we win more?" Chennithala asked.
On the debate over former LDF-backed MLA PV Anvar's entry into UDF, Chennithala said, "We tried to bring Anvar to our side, but his criticism of our candidate became a problem. We tried to correct him, but he didn't listen. So UDF decided to ignore him."

Asked if the opposition leader would become the chief minister if Congress won the next election, Chennithala said the party high command would take a final call.
While Congress leaders have largely aligned with Satheesan's stand opposing Anvar's entry into UDF, IUML leaders have signalled that the door is not totally shut on the former MLA with senior leaders saying that Anvar was a factor in Nilambur bypoll and the votes he secured would come up for discussion.
IUML MP ET Mohammed Basheer said Anvar was a factor in Nilambur bypoll as he secured significant votes and it was natural in politics to consider broadening UDF's support base ahead of future elections. "The matter of how to accommodate likeminded people for that is something which has to be discussed," he added.
Basheer said there would be more favourable changes in the relations between parties during elections and said that it is something that can be discussed then.
"The issue of Anvar's entry will automatically come up for discussions," he added.
Senior leader MK Muneer said though he felt that this is not the time to discuss Anvar's entry into the front, the votes he received would come up for discussion. "We are not viewing the over 18,000 votes he secured lightly. Most votes he secured came from the Left. That is not a small number," said Muneer.
He added that Anvar's remarks against UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath and Satheesan had created difficulties in reaching a collective decision.
"IUML had taken initiatives in this regard at the outset. But we won't do anything that would cause damage to the front," he said.
IUML's leadership meeting in Malappuram on Friday will discuss Nilambur election results. After UDF won in Nilambur, Satheesan had said that the front had closed its door to Anvar based on a collective decision and there were no discussions about reopening it at the moment.
Anvar, who resigned as the MLA after a fallout with CPM and necessitated the bypoll, made inroads into the vote banks of both fronts. He secured 19,760 votes (11.23%) in the constituency.

'Frequent flier PM' off on 5-nation jaunt: Cong takes a jab at Modi
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit abroad, the Congress on Tuesday said the "frequent flier PM" is off on a 5-nation "jaunt" and alleged that he is running away from four issues, including the Manipur situation and US President Donald Trump's claims about bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also alleged that the prime minister is running away from the "revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions". Prime Minister Modi will embark on a five-nation tour beginning July 2 to participate in the BRICS Summit in Brazil and expand India's ties with several key nations of the Global South. "When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt," Ramesh said in a post on X. He is running away from at least four issues that are agitating the nation, Ramesh said. Ramesh alleged that the PM is running away from Manipur, "which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed". The Congress leader claimed that PM Modi is also running away from revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor "because of the PM's decisions". His remarks were an apparent reference to the reported comments of India's defence attache to Indonesia. However, the Indian embassy in Indonesia, in a post on X on Sunday, had said that the defence attache's remarks have been "quoted out of context and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker". Ramesh also claimed that the PM is running away from the continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick. He further alleged that the PM is running away from "the continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice even after 70 days". "The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024)," Ramesh said. Besides Brazil, Modi will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia during the eight-day trip, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). In the first leg of the visit, Modi will undertake a visit to Ghana from July 2 to 3. From Ghana, Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. In the third leg of his visit, Modi will visit Argentina from July 4 to 5. In the fourth leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The prime minister will visit Brazil from July 5 to 8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit followed by a state visit. In the final leg of his visit, Modi will travel to Namibia.

Operation Kagar: Telangana Congress chief Mahesh Kumar Goud hits back at Amit Shah; defends party's stance on dialogue with Maoists
HYDERABAD: Telangana Congress president B Mahesh Kumar Goud on Monday condemned Union minister Amit Shah 's comments about the grand old party's stand on 'Operation Kagar', launched against the Maoists by the Centre. He questioned what was wrong with asking the Centre to hold talks with the Maoists. "The entire country saw how BJP withdrew from the war against Pakistan at the behest of US President Donald Trump's unilateral diktat to the central govt. What moral right do Amit Shah and BJP have to even question Congress' stand on Naxalites when the Modi govt agreed to a ceasefire and to hold talks with Pakistan, which sponsored terrorists, resulting in the Pahalgam attack?" he told reporters, after inspecting arrangements being made for AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge's July 4 visit to Telangana. Kharge would address Congress leaders and workers at LB Stadium on July 4. Congress has always prioritised peace, internal security, and national unity. Dialogue and diplomacy should never be seen as weaknesses but rather as tools to protect democracy and resolve internal conflict. The comments made by Amit Shah against Congress were politically motivated, he said. "The BJP govt stopped the war against Pakistan on the directions of Donald Trump. Why has Amit Shah not made any comments on this issue?" he asked.

"Super Premium Frequent Flier PM...": Congress MP Jairam Ramesh attacks PM Narendra Modi ahead of his 5-nation visit
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, ahead of his five-nation visit. The Congress leader alleged that PM Modi is running away from national issues. Sharing an X post, Jairam Ramesh wrote, "When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt. He is running away from at least 4 issues that are agitating the nation." Listing the national issues, Ramesh targeted PM Modi over the ethnic violence in Manipur . "1. Manipur, which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed," he wrote on X. On the issue of Operation Sindoor , he alleged that India suffered setbacks on the first two days of the operation and also mentioned US President Donald Trump's claim of mediation between India and Pakistan. Live Events "2. Revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions. 3. Continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick," he wrote. Ramesh also targeted the Prime Minister for not bringing the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice. "4. The continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice, even after 70 days. The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024)," the post further read. Earlier, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched an attack against the BJP-led government over his allegations of mediation by the United States in Operation Sindoor, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi "followed" Donald Trump following a call by the US leader. Addressing a convention of Congress workers in Bhopal, Rahul Gandhi attacked the BJP-RSS and alleged that if slight pressure is exerted on them, "they run away out of fear". "Now, I understand RSS-BJP well. If slight pressure is put on them, they run away out of fear. When Trump called Modiji, Modiji kya kar rahe ho, Narender-Surrender and with 'ji hazooor', Narenderji followed Trump. In the 1971 war, the Seventh Fleet came from the US. Indira Gandhi said, I will do whatever I have to do. This is the difference. This is their character; all of them are like this. Since the Independence movement, they have had this habit of writing letters of surrender," Rahul Gandhi said. Meanwhile, PM Modi will embark on a five-nation visit from July 2, during which he will attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil and hold meetings with leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to strengthen bilateral ties.
