Telangana factory blast: PM Modi announces ₹2 lakh ex-gratia to kin of deceased, ₹50,000 for a dozen injured
'Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy at a factory in Sangareddy, Telangana. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM @narendramodi,' Prime Minister's Office posted on X.
"Extremely anguished by the loss of precious lives, following a chemical factory blast in Sangareddy district in Telangana. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the bereaved. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured. We wish them a speedy recovery. The State Govt and authorities are working at a war footing in their rescue efforts and providing immediate medical and other assistance to the injured," Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated in a post on X.
The incident took place around 8.15 am - 9.35 am at Sangareddy district's Sigachi Pharma Company in Pasamailaram Phase 1 in Medak, which claimed 12 lives and left dozens injured.
'There was a blast at Sigachi Pharma, a chemical production factory in Pasamailaram. The incident occurred around 8:15-9:35 am, and the police were informed within 10 minutes. We reached the spot within 20 minutes. NDRF, SDF, and other rescue teams, along with 10 fire engines, arrived at the scene. So far, six dead bodies have been found, and two people died while undergoing treatment at Chanda Nagar,' V Satyanaryana, Inspector General, Multi Zone II stated.
"As many as 12 people died and 34 people are under treatment. We are hopeful that there would be no more (deaths)," PTI quoted Telangana Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha as saying.

5 arrested for robbing Bengaluru jewellery store, fleeing with gold worth Rs 50 lakh
The Bengaluru police have arrested five men from Rajasthan for allegedly robbing a jewellery shop in the city and fleeing with gold ornaments worth Rs 50 lakh. Investigators have so far recovered 478 grams of the 600 grams of gold that was stolen. Announcing the arrests on Tuesday, Seemanth Kumar Singh, Police Commissioner, Bengaluru, identified them as Narayan Lal, 43, Keeraram, 35, Pushpendra Singh, 35, Mahendra Gehlot, 27, and Dilip Kumar, 36. All the accused have been presented before court and remanded in judicial custody. The commissioner said the accused used knives to intimidate a staff member at the store. According to the police, on May 9, the owner of Bhavani Jewellers left the jewellery shop to have his lunch, leaving an employee at the counter. Around 4 pm, two men entered the shop and threatened the employee with knives before taking 41 gold chains. The police relied on CCTV footage and other evidence to track down the accused and arrest them. Officers said Narayan sold phenyl in Kengeri. He had collected details of the jewellery shop located in Seegehalli and met Mahendra, who ran a grocery store in Kengeri. The two decided to rob the store and approached the people from Rajasthan who were doing odd jobs in the city. After the robbery, the accused sold the jewellery to one Dilip Kumar in Rajasthan, investigators added.

Tejashwi Yadav makes 15 promises to disabled community ahead of Bihar polls
Patna: Bihar Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday made 15 major poll announcements for the disabled community during a program held at Patna's Bapu auditorium. Tejashwi promised that if his government comes to power in Bihar, a separate commission and department for disabled people will be formed. He said that the disability certificate process will be simplified to ensure easier access to government benefits, and disabled individuals will receive a pension of Rs 1500 per month, increasing by Rs 200 annually, reaching Rs 2500 in five years. He also promised that schools would be established in every district and reserved beds in government hospitals. Tejashwi also announced reservations for disabled people in Panchayat elections, a separate stadium for disabled players to facilitate their sports training, government jobs for disabled sportspersons, 5 per cent reservation in housing schemes, helping disabled individuals secure their own homes, free smartphones, speakers, and essential devices for the visually impaired. Tejashwi Yadav also criticised the Bihar government, alleging it is not serious about the rights of disabled people, and positioned these promises as a commitment to social justice and inclusive development under a potential RJD-led government. According to the 2011 Census, India has 2.68 crore disabled individuals, which is 2.21 per cent of the population. Bihar, after UP and Maharashtra, has the third-highest disabled population in the country, with 8.69 per cent of the state's population. The disabled population in Bihar is 10.98 per cent in rural areas and 3.48 per cent in urban areas.

Bangalore City University to be named after former PM Manmohan Singh
Bengaluru: The Congress-led government in Karnataka has decided to name the Bangalore City University after late former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah made the announcement in this regard in the media briefing after the special Cabinet meeting held at Nandi Hills. A proposal to rename the Bangalore City University as "Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University" has been approved, CM Siddaramaiah announced. Bengaluru Rural district will now be renamed as 'Bengaluru North District', and Bagepalli town will be renamed 'Bhagyanagara', he declared. A Cabinet sub-committee chaired by Minister for Law H.K. Patil will be formed to review progress and further actions regarding illegal mining, CM Siddaramaiah stated. The committee has been directed to submit the report in a month. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah further said: "We have approved a total outlay of Rs 3,400 crore, including Rs 2,050 crore allocated exclusively for Bengaluru rural and urban districts." Regarding the Yettinahole Drinking Water Project, the revised estimate stands at Rs 23,251 crore, out of which Rs 17,147 crore has already been spent, he said. "The project is primarily a drinking water supply initiative. Replenishing lakes is a secondary priority," the CM said. Of the total 24.1 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water involved, 14 TMC is required for drinking water alone. Hence, the cabinet decided to complete the drinking water component first, he added. 'Within the next two years, we aim to supply drinking water to all the targeted districts and taluks,' the CM said. "The project aims to provide drinking water to 75 lakh people across 9 districts. The matter was discussed and a decision will be taken in the next cabinet meeting," CM Siddaramaiah stated. It was decided to build residential schools for children of registered construction workers in every district, with a total allocation of Rs 1,125.25 crore, he said. Two residential training centres will be built in Bengaluru at a cost of Rs 10 crore to train candidates from backward communities for competitive exams like IAS, IPS, IRS, the Chief Minister said. This special Cabinet session at Nandi Hills resulted in major decisions and project approvals aimed at boosting development in the region. The focus was particularly on improving drinking water access, education, irrigation, and healthcare infrastructure, he stated.
