RM5k aid for Tambunan small traders

TAMBUNAN: A total of RM275,000 was distributed to 55 licensed small stall traders in Tambunan through a one-off special aid of RM5,000 each. The assistance was presented by Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan at the Tambunan District Community Hall. The initiative is part of the 'Bantuan Untukmu' program aimed at easing the operational costs of traders, improving their business infrastructure, and boosting grassroots entrepreneurship. In his speech, Dr Jeffrey expressed pride in the achievements of the Tambunan community, noting that the district has nearly eradicated hardcore poverty. However, he acknowledged that there remain segments of the population living in poverty who require targeted strategic support tailored to current needs. He stressed the importance of continued support and new initiatives to ensure no citizen is left behind in the development process. Dr Jeffrey also reminded the people of Tambunan to stay alert to the various forms of assistance available, not only from the State Government but also from the Federal Government. He emphasized that such aid is not meant to foster dependency but to serve as a stepping stone toward self-reliance and long-term well-being. The federal government, through the Sabah Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industries (Maffi), has also intensified efforts in rural development with allocations exceeding RM33.59 million for agri-food projects across Sabah. These projects include the rehabilitation of 534.55 hectares of abandoned paddy fields, the construction of 23 agricultural produce collection centres, and the implementation of integrated cash crop and livestock initiatives. These efforts not only generate economic output but also empower the local agricultural sector. He also highlighted the Agropreneur Muda program, which offers opportunities for youth aged 18 to 45 to become agricultural entrepreneurs. The program provides grants, fertilizer assistance, access to productive land, and technical training. He noted that the initiative is particularly relevant for young people in Tambunan who possess idle land with development potential. He advised the RM5,000 aid recipients to use the funds wisely, whether to improve their stall structures, upgrade business equipment, or increase inventory. The assistance is expected to boost their daily income and stimulate the local economy through higher-quality services and products. Furthermore, he encouraged traders to view the aid as a catalyst toward achieving more stable and sustainable income streams. In closing, he congratulated all recipients and expressed hope that their businesses would continue to grow and benefit their families and communities. High Court upholds RM780,000 awarded to sacked exec
The High Court in George Town, Penang, upheld an earlier decision by the Industrial Court. GEORGE TOWN : The High Court here has upheld an Industrial Court's decision awarding nearly RM800,000 in back wages and compensation to a senior employee of a semiconductor firm who was wrongfully dismissed in 2018. The High Court's decision will see Kon Siang Boon, a former global account manager at Molex (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, retaining the RM789,333.58 awarded to him by the Industrial Court last year. The High Court also ordered the company to pay RM7,500 in costs. Justice Anand Ponnudurai, in his ruling today, said there was no error of law in the Industrial Court's findings, and that the court had rightfully preferred Kon's version of events over the company's, based on the credibility of witnesses. Kon, who had been attached with the company for nearly 30 years, was accused of making fraudulent claims while on a business trip, which Molex claimed breached company policy, and was subsequently sacked in 2018 after a domestic inquiry. The Industrial Court, however, found the dismissal unjustified and procedurally flawed. At the time of his dismissal, he was earning over RM21,000 a month, with bonuses and allowances. According to the facts of the case, from 2016 to November 2017, Kon submitted meal and transport claims under the prevailing company travel policy, which were all approved by his superiors. Molex revised this policy on Nov 1, 2017, to bar meal claims. However, the Industrial Court found that this revised policy had not been clearly communicated to Kon. The court accepted Kon's testimony that he only became aware of the new rules in December 2017 and had stopped making such claims after that. In delivering his ruling, Anand said the Industrial Court's decision was reasonable and backed by detailed analysis.

Harn Len posts stronger 4Q, declares special dividend of 3.00 sen
KUALA LUMPUR: Harn Len Corp Bhd remains cautious and is actively formulating strategies to safeguard its business operations. The plantation group said these include enhancing efficiency and implementing cost rationalisation measures to mitigate potential negative impacts. Harn Len noted that the crude palm oil (CPO) price is currently hovering between RM3,900 to RM4,100 per tonne. It said prices fluctuated in June 2025, driven by a surge in global crude oil prices early in the month and the ceasefire in the Israel-Iran conflict. 'Surge of soybean oil prices and high demand from India will help to support the CPO price, where the average CPO price for the year is forecasted to remain above RM4,000 per tonne,' it added. In the fourth quarter ended May 31, Harn Len's net profit surged to RM22.5mil, or earnings per share of 3.68 sen, from RM1.5mil, or 0.27 sen, a year ago. This brought its full-year profit to RM33.4mil, or 5.75 sen. Quarterly revenue rose 39.3% to RM70.9mil from RM50.9mil, lifting full-year revenue to RM283.2mil. Harn Len said the higher operating revenue was mainly driven by increased sales volumes of CPO and palm kernel. The surge in profit was primarily due to a gain from the disposal of an investment property. It has declared a special dividend of 3.00 sen per share for the financial year ended May 31, 2025, payable on July 15 to shareholders on record as at July 1.

Factory worker loses RM500k in online investment scam in Muar
MUAR: A 46-year-old factory worker lost nearly RM500,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam promising unrealistically high returns. The victim, who lodged a police report yesterday, was lured by an advertisement on social media in early May. Muar police chief ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the victim clicked on a link and was later contacted via WhatsApp by an unknown individual. The scammer instructed him to download an app called 'PHG PLUS,' which guaranteed returns of 50% within a week and 500% in six months. 'Believing the promises, the victim deposited a total of RM488,740 into six different accounts through 39 transactions between May 21 and July 21, 2025,' Raiz Mukhliz said in a statement. The victim only realised he had been cheated when he tried to withdraw what was supposedly RM6 million in profits. He was then asked to pay an additional RM600,000 for 'income tax' before any withdrawal could be processed. The case is now being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Authorities urge the public to be cautious of online investment schemes offering unusually high returns. – Bernama
