While the world might enjoy an ice cream some days during the hot temperatures, America celebrates an entire month dedicated to the sweet and cold dessert. According to worldpopulationreview.com, the USA is the second-largest consumer of ice cream, with about 20.80 litres of ice cream being consumed every year, which is equivalent to 5 gallons of the dessert per person. No wonder the country celebrates ice cream with a national day!

celebrated?

Americans celebrate National Ice Cream Day annually, on the third Sunday of July. This is because in 1984, then President
Ronald Reagan
created the day to celebrate and honour the dessert that was enjoyed by over 90% of the population.
Additionally, it was also done to honour the American dairy industry, where most ice cream companies are family-owned and have been in the business for more than 50 years.
The president also termed ice cream as "a nutritious and wholesome food" and declared July as National Ice Cream Month!

On 80th anniv of Flying Officer Sekhon, villagers seek repair of road leading to his village

Ludhiana: It is not a matter of pride that even as the 80th birth anniversary of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was celebrated with great fanfare Thursday, the road named after him, which connects Ludhiana to his native village, lies in a shambles. This surely doesn't befit the celebration to honour his bravery. Residents of his village, Issewal, lamented that they have long been suffering because of the poor condition of the road leading to the birthplace of the great martyr and sought that the govt undertake its repair work at the earliest. Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration during war time, in recognition of his lone defence of Srinagar Air Base against a Pakistan Air Force air raid during the India-Pakistan war of 1971. He is the only member of the Indian Air Force to be honoured with the PVC. TOI travelled from Ludhiana to Issewal on the road named after him along the Sidhwan canal and found most stretches along its six kilometre length dotted with potholes. It is particularly bad near Birmi village and Issewal. Daljit Singh, cousin of the flying officer, said the issue of the poor condition of the road, which connects to Mullanpur Hambran road, was raised at various levels, but nothing has been done so far. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NYC Hotel Smartphone Booking | Bookmark Now! | New York City Hotel Booking | Mill Canyon Road Click Here Undo "New colonies are coming up in the area, and so the traffic on the road has increased. The road leads to the native village of the great martyr, so it should be kept in a proper condition and be re-carpeted," Daljit, who retired from the telecom department, said. Another villager, Major Singh, said though the condition of roads in the village has improved, the one connecting Ludhiana to their village is in dire need of repair. He called upon the govt to urgently do something in this regard. Yet another villager said it doesn't look like the road leads to the native village of the only officer of the Indian Air Force who received the country's highest wartime gallantry award. He said the state govt is responsible for the upkeep of the road and should get its repair work done without further delay. Deepinder Singh Chahal (Atley Chahal), a builder whose office lies on the road, said the govt and builders need to work together and get it repaired. It is not just the residents of the area, but also those who have offices along the road who face inconvenience because of it. Meanwhile, senior Congress Leader Captain Sandeep Sandhu, who is the Halqa Dakha constituency incharge of the party, said he has raised the issue multiple times, but to no avail. He added that as the country celebrates the birth anniversary of the great martyr, the road to his native village should have been in a better condition. MLA Dakha Manpreet Singh Ayali said the road was a kuchha road, but during the SAD govt, it was widened under PMGSY. It was named Sardar Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon Marg. The MLA said they had asked the state govt to repair the road, but they were told that there were no funds. A PWD official said they will soon start the repair work.

Residents pour out their woes at Janaspandana in Hassan

Hassan: The Janaspandana programme organised to redress public grievances in Hassan evoked a good response. A total of 140 applications were received, and deputy commissioner KS Latha Kumari directed the officials concerned to take action on them by the next programme scheduled for next month. The DC instructed officials to conduct a Pension Adalat alongside the land record campaign to identify those who were left out and provide govt scheme benefits to eligible individuals. The DC directed the assistant commissioners to take strict action to remove encroachments on lakes, grazing lands, and cemeteries. She also instructed that applications lacking necessary documents be submitted to the missing committee and directed officials to ensure bus services for school and college students in Bandi Timmanahalli, Alur taluk. She advised submitting applications when the Ambedkar Development Corporation invites applications for borewell projects. In case of any complaints, officials were instructed to visit the site in person and address the problems. The IAS officer also directed ensuring the safety of all govt buildings, prioritising the repair of school buildings for children's safety, and protecting govt properties. In response to a request to provide 5kg of rice and other food items instead of 10kg of rice per person through ration shops, she suggested forming a team to visit selected gram panchayats in each taluk, gather public opinions, and prepare a comprehensive report for submission to govt. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Eligible poor families should receive ration items, and the tahsildar was instructed to personally visit, verify, and provide the benefits. Volunteers recover 7 bags of liquor bottles during Chamundi Hills cleanliness drive

1 2 3 Mysuru: A cleanliness drive carried out by Yuva Brigade volunteers at the Chamundi Hills on Sunday revealed that the 1,001 steps are being misused for liquor consumption during the night. The volunteers recovered around seven bags of liquor bottles from both sides of the steps. The locals urged the forest, police, and temple authorities to ensure that the steps are kept sacred and devoid of these illegal activities. The cleanliness drive started at 6.15am on Sunday, led by the state convener of the organisation, Chandrashekhar Nanjanagud. Sixty-seven volunteers participated in the drive, during which two tractors of waste, especially plastic drinking water bottles, were collected from the steps. "As the Aashada Friday celebrations concluded last week, we decided to embark on this cleanliness drive. Plastic waste is common in most of the sacred places. But liquor bottles on the steps really shocked us," he said. "We want the local police and the temple authorities to look into this issue seriously," he added. Post-cleanliness drive, Chamundi Hills gram panchayat arranged vehicles to ferry the waste collected by the volunteers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo According to the locals, the waste menace continues to haunt even after several awareness drives by the locals, govt, and non-governmental agencies; the steps remain polluted. Ensure steps to hills are safe, clean: Local "Even though during the Aaashada (celebrations) single-use plastic was banned atop the hills, no action was taken near the steps. It resulted in a flood of waste. The temple authorities must ensure that the steps are safe and clean. Using the steps for consuming alcohol will be a shame for the entire shrine," said Lingaraju, a local resident.
