Virginia Beach school raises thousands for Operation Smile
'This is what I like to call it a passion project,' said Lizzie Meyers, a fourth-grade teacher at ODS. 'This has been a long time coming.'
Several years ago, Meyers created a club at the school to teach children about , which is based in Virginia Beach.
'They understand that the whole platform of Operation Smile is to improve lives of our children around the world who have [a] cleft palate and need the surgeries and don't have the means to do it themselves,' Meyers said.
That brings us to .
ODS held multiple fundraisers earning $6,000 to have a dolphin statue placed in their school. Meyers said the Operation Smile Club at ODS let students and staff know they wanted to earn the statue, but they needed the help of everyone, and everyone stepped up.
'We started fundraising early in the year,' Meyers said. 'Candy grams are a huge hit at our school. So, we did candy grams for Halloween, and then we did candy grams again right around winter break. Then, we had the highlight of their year, which is the middle school dance. We did candy grams again for Valentine's Day. So, candy crahams are a big hit.'
Funds raised go to programs at Operation Smile to provide leadership training for Hampton Roads students and to help with the costs of surgery for people born around the world with cleft palate conditions. Over the last three years, the Operation Smile Club at ODS has raised more than $14,000 for the organization.
'In years past. we've always done fundraising to just give to Operation Smile, and their goal has always been to try to beat the year before,' Meyers said. 'So, they know that a surgery is around $250. So they always try to breakdown our donation to see how many surgeries, and then we have morning announcements every morning, and that's a big highlight. They like to be able to tell everyone as a community we came together and we helped make this difference, so we can be proud of the fact that we earned this many surgeries this year.'
ODS seventh grader Peyton Smith won her school's design competition for the dolphin.
'It's just something that's really special to me,' Peyton said. 'We got an opportunity that we were able to design for Operation Smile how we could picture it in our mind and have it come to life, and for me, I feel like the ocean and the beach is like my house, and I feel like everyone at ODS should feel welcome in their own home, and you should be [at] a place where everyone feels comfortable. It's like a good learning environment, and since we represent, like, rising tide at each grade level, we have a different team of animals and stuff like that, I really thought that Virginia Beach should be represented by a home, like the beach. That was my inspiration.'
The details painted on the dolphin are vibrant. The mission is life changing, and ODS now, and forever, has a symbol of the difference the school community has made.
'We have been told that we are the first elementary and middle school, public school, in Virginia Beach to earn the dolphin statue,' Meyers said. 'So we're very proud of that.'

Heidi Klum is doing a ‘worm and parasite cleanse' — doc warns how it could do more harm than good
Auf Wiedersehen, creepy crawlers. Heidi Klum believes her body is infested with worms and parasites — and now the German supermodel and her husband Tom Kaulitz are embarking on a months-long cleanse to purge them from her system. 'I'm going to deworm and de-parasite for the first time,' Klum, 52, told the Wall Street Journal. 'I heard that you're supposed to do this once a year, and I've never done it. So I feel like I'm really behind. I don't know what the heck is going to come out.' Advertisement 3 While Heidi Klum doesn't follow any diets, she recently started a 'warm and parasite cleanse' with her husband. WireImage Asked whether she had any reason to believe her gut is infested, Klum didn't hesitate. 'Apparently, we all have parasites and worms,' the 'Project Runway' host said. 'If you are someone who eats raw things every now and then, like, for example, sushi.' While she didn't share specifics about her regimen, Klum said she's taking herb-packed pills to evict the freeloaders she believes are living inside her. Advertisement 'There's a lot of clove in there. The parasite hates clove. They also hate the seeds from a papaya,' she explained. 'We have all this metal inside of us, and it's also very important that you use this de-metaling stuff.' But should the rest of us be panicking about parasites — or is this just another celebrity wellness fad trending on TikTok? The Post spoke to Dr. David Purow, a gastroenterologist at Huntington Hospital, to find out. Do all of us really have parasites and worms? The human gut is teeming with trillions of microorganisms, including both beneficial and potentially harmful bacteria. But Purow said Klum's claims are a bit overblown. Advertisement 3 Common parasites found in human guts include roundworms, hookworms and pinworms. katestudio – 'Not all people have parasites and worms as part of their normal microbiome,' he said. While parasites in humans occurs more commonly in certain parts of the world, Purow said they're still considered infections — not a standard issue. Advertisement 'Types of protozoa, a different type of microorganism, are considered parasitic and can cause harm to the host. There are some types that can be found in the human body that don't appear to have harmful effects,' he explained. 'However, more research needs to be done in this area.' Are there any benefits to a cleanse like this? 'There are no clear, proven benefits to these cleanses,' said Purow, who is also VP, Medicine Service Line for Northwell Health Eastern Region. Scientists rely on rigorous, placebo-controlled clinical trials to determine whether treatments work, but he noted that such research is lacking for cleanses like these. 'It is unlikely that we will ever see someone fund a study to see if these natural herbs and byproducts can be proven to be effective,' Purow said. 3 Klum sported a worm costume at her 2022 Halloween party. Getty Images for Heidi Klum In lab settings, many of the ingredients featured in these cleanses appear to have positive effects, but they haven't been well tested in humans. For example, research suggests clove may help kill worms, while turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. 'I truly believe that some of these are potentially helpful, but not enough research has been done for us to truly know which are best,' Purow said. Are there any downsides? Advertisement On day 10 of her parasite and worm cleanse, Klum shared an Instagram video stirring a beige liquid. 'This is yucky as hell,' she admitted. But beyond the unpleasant taste and the cost of unproven treatments, Purow cautioned that some herbal and alternative remedies carry some serious risks. Advertisement 'Wormwood can cause neurological damage, for example,' he said. 'High doses of turmeric and clove oil can cause liver damage.' In his practice, Purow has also seen patients who deliberately ingested pinworms in hopes of benefitting from their potentially anti-inflammatory effects. 'I have done colonoscopies on such patients and found pinworms living in their colons,' he said. 'Possible harmful effects of these worms include itching and genitourinary complications.' Advertisement Without specifics, Purow said it's hard to comment on the safety and effectiveness of Klum's particular cleanse. 'I definitely have concerns about many cleanses people choose to do, but when carefully researched, there are some that my patients have found helpful,' he said. But if you actually think you've been infected with a parasite, he urges you to see a doctor. 'It would be best to seek medical attention if one is concerned that they might have a parasite or a worm,' he said.

I have ‘Harlequin sign' — only half of my face sweats and gets red from exercise
Feeling flush? Harlequin sign might sound like a fun card game or Halloween outfit — but it's actually a rare nervous system condition characterized by asymmetrical sweating. Sydney Patrice, 26, a physical therapist from Baltimore, shared a video on TikTok in which she explained that only half her face turns red and sweaty during exercise — while the other side stays ghostly pale and completely dry. Harlequin sign might sound like a fun card game or Halloween outfit — but it's actually a rare nervous system condition characterized by asymmetrical sweating. SalmArina – 'One of the nerves got messed up in one of my neck surgeries last year,' she said. 'And so now, whenever I go running, only half my face gets red.' Neurosurgeon Dr. Betsy Grunch chimed in online to share how something like this can happen. 'There are two syndromes that could potentially happen after damage to your autonomic nervous system,' she said. 'If you're stressed out, your eyes get really big, your face gets flushed, you sweat, you get dry mouth — that's all part of our body's fight or flight mechanism and it travels through the sympathetic chain, which lies in front of the spine.' When that chain gets damaged, it can cause two conditions: Horner syndrome and Harlequin syndrome. 'Whenever I go running, only half my face gets red,' Sydney Patrice said on TikTok. TikTok/@sydneypatrice9 Horner syndrome is characterized by drooping eyelids, constricted pupils and a lack of sweating on one side of the face. Meanwhile, Harlequin syndrome causes only one side of the face to get flushed and sweaty, while the other remains completely dry. Why only one side? 'Because you have a sympathetic chain on either side and each supplies one side of your face,' Grunch noted. 'So if it's damaged on one side, it will affect that one side.' While it is a known risk with anterior cervical surgery — where doctors operate on the part of your spine that's in your neck by accessing it through the front — it's extremely rare. Though exact numbers are difficult to pin down, Harlequin syndrome is estimated to affect fewer than 1,000 people in the US, according to the Cleveland Clinic. It was first described in medical literature in 1988. Harlequin syndrome is generally a temporary and benign condition, but symptoms can become permanent in some situations, according to Grunch. While extraordinary, it is possible to have Horner syndrome and Harlequin syndrome — as Sydney appears to — since both involve injury to the sympathetic chain.
