Malaysia Aims For 10,000 EV Charging Stations By 2025
By Kenny Teng
BANGKOK, May 22 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is targeting to establish 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations nationwide by the end of 2025, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
Fadillah, who also serves as the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Malaysia aspires to become a regional hub for EV production and innovation while strengthening the entire EV value chain.
"The government is focusing on improving and upgrading nationwide charging infrastructure to boost EV sales and attract potential investors to this growing segment.
"Our target is to have approximately 10,000 charging stations across Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak, by the end of this year," he said during an address at a dinner with the Malaysian diaspora in Thailand on Thursday.
Fadillah highlighted Malaysia's National Investment Aspirations, which aim to position the country as a global supply chain hub by attracting high-quality investments and enhancing the capabilities of local industries.
"I believe Malaysia has great potential in the EV segment. As EV sales increase, more investors will be drawn to the sector," he said.
However, Fadillah acknowledged the current challenges, particularly the demand for faster direct current (DC) chargers over alternating current (AC) chargers.
"We are working closely with Petronas and other industry players to address this issue. Our ministry is ensuring sufficient charging connectivity, including along highways, in rural areas, and across other parts of Malaysia," he explained.

Local authorities issue 14,834 compounds against foreign-owned businesses
KUALA LUMPUR: Local authorities have issued 14,834 compounds against business premises for offences, including illegal licence transfers to foreigners, since 2023, Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said. He added that 2,880 premises were sealed, and 23 business licences revoked. 'The Ministry and PBTs have never allowed foreign nationals to apply for or own hawker licences, grocery stores, eateries, or car workshops,' Nga stressed. Speaking in Parliament, he emphasised that hiring foreigners under hawker licences is prohibited, as the government prioritises Malaysian traders. The enforcement aligns with existing policies like the Hawkers By-Laws, which restrict business licence applications to citizens. Nga confirmed that PBTs conduct regular inspections, especially in areas with high foreigner presence, and confiscate goods from unlicensed foreign traders. Licences are revoked for misuse, with stricter application conditions imposed to curb foreign-owned businesses. Responding to concerns about Malaysians acting as proxies for foreign spouses, Nga urged citizens to uphold the Rukun Negara principles. 'Submit evidence to the ministry for action,' he said. - Bernama

Street protests risk Malaysia's tourism growth ahead of VM2026
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (MATA) has raised concerns over ongoing street protests, warning they could damage the country's reputation as a safe travel destination ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). With Malaysia actively promoting the tourism campaign to attract international visitors, large-scale demonstrations risk undermining economic recovery and public security. 'A tarnished national image can directly affect tourist arrivals and foreign investments,' MATA stated. The association highlighted that protests disrupt business operations, reduce job opportunities, and increase living costs, stressing that public safety must remain a priority. MATA cautioned that mass mobilisations could escalate into conflicts, further destabilising public order. Malaysia, known for Islamic and nature-based tourism, faces significant challenges if negative global media coverage persists. Datuk Sri Dr Mohd Khalid Harun, MATA president, noted Malaysia's post-pandemic recovery hinges on stability. 'Tourists seek safe destinations. Without peace, they will choose alternatives,' he said. While acknowledging the right to protest, he urged responsible actions to safeguard national harmony. 'Collective efforts are vital to ensure VM2026's success and sustained economic growth,' he added. - Bernama
