Pakistan's energy sector challenges: Dar directs ministries to develop actionable solutions
ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has emphasised the need for reforms in the energy sector and directed relevant ministries to present concrete, actionable solutions to address these challenges while avoiding any increase in gas tariffs for the domestic consumers.
Deputy Prime Minister Dar chaired a high-level meeting to review critical challenges facing the energy sector.
The meeting was attended by the ministers for Petroleum, Power and Food; SAPM Tariq Bajwa; National Coordinator on Power reforms; secretaries Petroleum and Power, and other senior government officials.

Speaking at the Foundation Day ceremony of the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad, Dar warned New Delhi against unilateral actions and reiterated Pakistan's commitment to regional peace and sovereignty. He strongly criticised India's use of 'false flag operations' to justify aggression against Pakistan, particularly citing the Pulwama incident, which he said was used by India to stage a fabricated narrative. 'India must revisit its strategic choices and end its policy of coercion,' Dar stated. Tensions between Pakistan and India escalated on April 22, when an attack in Pahalgam killed 26 people. India blamed Pakistan for the incident. Pakistan has categorically rejected Indian accusations. India then undertook a series of hostile actions the next day on April 23, suspending the 65-year-old Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), cancelling visas for Pakistani citizens, closing the Wagah-Attari border crossing and ordering the shutdown of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, among others. Read: Pak IWT stance vindicated by arbitration court Both the countries subsequently reduced diplomatic staff at their respective embassies in the other's territory. Referring to water disputes, Dar asserted that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, accusing it of attempting to weaponise water against Pakistan. He reaffirmed Pakistan's resolve to safeguard its territorial integrity and uphold its sovereign rights. On the Kashmir issue, the DPM said the dispute is internationally recognised and its peaceful resolution is essential for regional stability. He accused India of openly violating international laws, while reiterating Pakistan's adherence to the principle of peaceful coexistence. Commenting on global affairs, Dar welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and Israel and reaffirmed Pakistan's longstanding support for Iran's legitimate stance. He called for dialogue-based resolution of Iran's nuclear issue and expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, condemning ongoing atrocities in the region. Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the Permanent Court of Arbitration's Supplemental Award on the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a major vindication of Pakistan's stance. In a statement on Sunday, the PM said water is vital for Pakistan and praised Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Attorney General Mansoor Awan for their legal efforts. The court stated that the Treaty remains binding unless terminated by mutual consent and does not allow one-sided suspension by either party. Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had said that Pakistan would consider war if India refused to honour the Indus Waters Treaty. 'India must choose between honouring the treaty or losing control of all six rivers,' Bilawal said, reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to protecting its share of water under the 1960 World Bank-brokered agreement. The comments followed an earlier statement made during a political rally in Sukkur, where Bilawal declared, 'Either the river will flow or their blood will.'

Security arrangements for Muharram: Two ministers visit key procession routes
LAHORE: On the special instructions of Chief Minister Punjab, provincial ministers conducted late-night visits to key mourning sites in Lahore to review the ongoing security arrangements for Muharram. Provincial Minister for Sports and Labour Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar, along with Provincial Minister for Food Bilal Yasin, Special Assistant to CM Sania Ashiq, CCPO Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana, Commissioner Lahore Zaid bin Maqsood, Deputy Commissioner Lahore Syed Musa Raza, and other senior officials, visited Nisar Haveli, Karbala Gamay Shah and Pando Street Imambargah. During the visits, the ministers thoroughly reviewed the security measures in place for the main Ashura procession routes and other significant locations. Police and district administration officials briefed the dignitaries on the overall security plan, deployment of volunteers, CCTV monitoring, security checks at entry and exit points, and contingency planning. Speaking on the occasion, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar issued instructions to ensure comprehensive security on procession routes and to immediately address any potential disruptions caused by rainfall. He emphasized the need for cleanliness, adequate lighting, provision of water, medical camps, and other essential facilities. He assured the organizers of the government's full cooperation and reiterated that maintaining peace and order during Muharram is a top priority for the Punjab government. The organizers expressed satisfaction over the arrangements and praised the inter-agency coordination. Furthermore, Faisal Ayub Khokhar appealed to the public, urging citizens of Lahore to fully cooperate with the police and administration during Muharram and demonstrate responsible citizenship. On this occasion, Bilal Yasin stated that the security has been placed on high alert at all procession routes and sensitive locations. Continuous monitoring is being carried out through CCTV cameras from central control rooms. He added that Section 144 is being strictly enforced and any unauthorized processions or gatherings will not be permitted. The ministers affirmed that, under the guidance of the Punjab government, all relevant departments are working round the clock to ensure a peaceful and dignified observance of Muharram. KP holds awareness session on e-vehicle policy
PESHAWAR: The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa organised an awareness session on National Electric Vehicle Policy (2025-30) here at Civil Secretariat. It was jointly presided over by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Industries, Abdul Karim Tordher, and Special Assistant for Transport, Rangez Khan, along with Federal Secretary for Industries and Production, Saif Anjum. Saif Anjum gave a detailed presentation aimed at promotion of electric mobility and eco-friendly transport across the country. The workshop was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Planning & Development Department Ikramullah, Secretary Planning and Development Department Adeel Shah, Secretary Transport Masood Younas, along with other senior officials, representatives from federal and provincial departments, industrialists, business leaders, President of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI), Fazal Muqeem, representatives from traders' associations and other key stakeholders. The workshop was organized to raise awareness about the new national policy and to strengthen coordination between federal and provincial governments. Participants actively contributed suggestions for further improving the policy. Under the new five-year policy, a target has been set to convert 30% of the country's vehicles to electric by 2030. To support this transition, 3,000 electric vehicle charging stations will be established nationwide. Addressing the participants, the Special Assistant Abdul Karim Tordher said that the world is moving towards environmentally friendly transport solutions and the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) is a significant step in this direction. He said that sincere policy-making efforts in Pakistan is a positive step in this regard, but emphasized the urgent need for a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure effective implementation. He stressed the importance of developing local manufacturing capabilities for electric vehicles, particularly in the production of lithium batteries.
