In a breathtaking cosmic reveal, NASA has released a pair of contrasting images of the same region of deep space, captured by two of the most powerful telescopes ever built – the legendary Hubble and the revolutionary James Webb. The star clusters, NGC 460 and NGC 456, located in the Small Magellanic Cloud, have once again become the centre of scientific and public fascination, offering two very different views of the same universe.
At first glance, both sets of images are visually arresting, but look closer and the differences are stark. The question naturally arises: which telescope offers the better view of the cosmos?
NGC 456 and NGC 460 are open star clusters nestled inside the Small Magellanic Cloud, a dwarf galaxy orbiting our Milky Way. It is a dense zone filled with interstellar dust, gas, and billions of stars. The stars in these clusters are astonishingly young by cosmic standards; some are barely a million years old, while the oldest among them top out at just 10 million.
NASA's recent side-by-side comparison isn't just a showcase of technology, but a visual lesson in how we observe the universe.
The Hubble Space Telescope, operating primarily in visible light, presents the region as a glowing bluish mass, highlighting structures like gas bubbles and cavities formed by intense stellar radiation. These powerful emissions push away gas and dust, carving the interstellar medium into shapes that look like art etched in light.
But where Hubble stops, Webb begins.
The James Webb Space Telescope views the cosmos in infrared. It peels back the curtain of visible light to reveal delicate filaments of dust and gas that remain invisible to Hubble. Dust, which appears black and cold in Hubble's view due to its opacity, glows warmly in Webb's images as it absorbs and re-emits heat from nearby stars.
This shows that dust is not just an obstacle but is itself a part of the story of space, NASA said, underlining a shift in how astronomers understand the interstellar medium.

Where Stars Are Born And Die Fast
These particular clusters are of immense interest to astronomers due to the presence of O-type stars, the heavyweights of the stellar world. They are hot, massive, and live fast, dying young. Out of an estimated 400 billion stars in the Milky Way, only about 20,000 belong to this rare and short-lived category.
Such stars are considered 'nuclear factories", enriching the surrounding interstellar space with heavier elements when they explode as supernovae. Clusters rich in O-type stars serve as natural laboratories for scientists to study the birth and evolution of stars.
The Small Magellanic Cloud isn't just another dwarf galaxy; it offers a window into cosmic history. It has a significantly lower concentration of heavy elements (known as 'metals" in astrophysical terms) than our Milky Way. This mirrors conditions believed to have existed in the early universe, soon after the Big Bang, when only hydrogen and helium were abundant.
By studying how gas, dust, and young stars interact in this metal-poor environment, researchers hope to understand the early mechanisms of galaxy formation, the behaviour of interstellar matter, and the effects of galactic collisions.
So Which Telescope Wins?
From a scientific standpoint, both telescopes serve different, complementary purposes. Hubble captures the universe as we would see it with our own eyes – crisp, blue, and majestic. Webb digs deeper, revealing the secrets hidden behind curtains of dust, offering an infrared vision of space's architecture.
In other words, Hubble offers the poetry, and Webb brings the prose.

After two weeks of intense science experiments at the International Space Station (ISS), it is time for farewell and celebration for IAF Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three other astronauts from the Axiom-4 mission, who are set to begin their return journey to Earth on Monday. As the Axiom-4 mission neared its conclusion, astronauts aboard the ISS gathered for a feast featuring a diverse menu representing the six nations involved in the mission. Currently, there are 11 astronauts on the ISS—seven from Expedition 73 and four from the Axiom-4 commercial mission. saare jahan se achcha' from space. Shukla said that he would be carrying a lot of memories and learning from Axiom-4 mission. Crew To Undock On July 14 The four-member astronaut crew is expected to undock from the International Space Station on July 14, as announced by NASA. The crew will undock from the space-facing port of the station's Harmony module aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft at approximately 7:05 a.m. EDT on July 14 as per the weather conditions, to begin their return to Earth and splashdown off the coast of California. 'We are working with the station program, overseeing the Axiom-4 progress. I think we need to undock that mission and the current target to undock is July 14," said Steve Stitch, Manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, during a press conference. 'Arrival back to Earth… splashdown is scheduled for July 15th at 3:00 p.m. IST," Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The Axiom-4 mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 25, successfully docked at the ISS on June 26 following a 28-hour flight aboard the Dragon spacecraft. With over 60 experiments across biomedical science, advanced materials, neuroscience, agriculture, and space technology, the Axiom-4 mission includes the most research conducted on an Axiom Space private astronaut mission to date. Shukla Will Undergo Rehabilitation According to ISRO, post-splashdown, Shukla will undergo a rehabilitation program lasting about seven days under the supervision of a flight surgeon to help him readjust to Earth's gravity. On July 1, scientists using the ATLAS survey telescope in Chile reported they had discovered an object in space they called 3I/ATLAS, after tracking it since June 14 this year. They quickly recognised the object was interstellar: its highly elliptical orbit around the sun and how quickly it was moving through space, at about 57-68 km/s relative to the sun, were clear giveaways. In fact, its path was found to trace back to the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. NASA has already said 3I/ATLAS won't pose any threat to the earth. Its closest approach to our planet will be about 270 million km. Its closest approach to the sun itself will be on October 29-30, 2025, at about 210 million km, just inside Mars's orbit. After it swings past the sun in its hyperbolic orbit, it will exit the solar system never to return. Early observations have confirmed that 3I/ATLAS is an active comet, exhibiting a visible coma — the cloud of ice particles and dust that enshroud the nucleus as it nears a star — and likely developing a tail as it approaches the sun. Photometric measurements have revealed it has a reddish hue. Its spectral slope of about 1.3% per 100 nm suggested its surface is rich in complex organic compounds or water ice. The size of the nucleus of 3I/ATLAS itself is still uncertain thanks to the dust surrounding it. Current estimates nonetheless suggest it's about 10-30 km wide, which would make it larger than either of its interstellar predecessors, 1I/ʻOumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Its composition and rotation period are under active investigation by multiple international teams using ground-based telescopes. Indeed 3I/ATLAS is likely to be the oldest comet scientists have ever observed, possibly predating the solar system itself by more than 3 billion years. Computer simulations that physicists have run have indicated that it may have originated in the thin disk of the Milky Way, or even from an older, thick-disk star. This means studying 3I/ATLAS could reveal unique details from the Milky Way's galactic history. Its rich water ice content and ancient origin also offer a rare chance to study primordial material from another star system, providing insights into the building blocks of planets and the processes of star formation across the galaxy. A global campaign is currently underway to monitor 3I/ATLAS as it passes through the inner solar system. Astronomers at observatories are collecting data on its composition, activity, and trajectory, with the aim of learning as much as possible before it fades from view. The comet should be visible to amateur astronomers with modest telescopes in late 2025 and early 2026. In sum, the discovery of 3I/ATLAS has opened a new window into the study of interstellar objects, offering a wealth of data for planetary scientists and astronomers eager to learn about the distant origins of such cosmic wanderers.
