Iconic Youth Tradition Faces Collapse Amid Club's Worst League Finish in Decades Man United at Risk of Losing Historic Record Dating Back to 1937 Manchester United could be on the verge of ending one of the most iconic records in world football .. one that dates back to before World War II. What's the Record? Since Oct 1937 United've fielded at least one youth academy player in every single match across all competitions .. a run that now stands at 4321 consecutive game. But according to Spanish outlet Marca, this historic streak's in danger of collapsing this season especially after the club's worst Premier League finish in over 50 ye , ending 15th in the 2024 /25 table. Only One Hope Remains The only true academy presence expected in the squad's Kobbie Mainoo, the 20 year old midfield prodigy. However any injury to him could break the record. The only other youth eligible player's 3rd choice keeper Tom Heaton who hasn't featured under new manager Ruben Amorim. The report describes United's situation starkly: "The club's identity of nurturing homegrown talent's slowly vanishing" This youth policy helped United dominate English football for decades, most notably during the Sir Alex Ferguson era. During this legendary run, United won 18 of their 20 league titles and 3 Champions league crowns 1968 , 1999 , 2008. A Legacy in Jeopardy As United continue rebuilding their 12 year wait for Premier League title grows longer. Liverpool 'makes decision' on new Alexander Isak transfer bid after Newcastle rejection
Liverpool will not make another bid for Alexander Isak after their initial bid for the Swedish striker was rejected by Newcastle United. On Friday is was confirmed the Magpies had turned down Liverpool's $157.9 million offer for the 25-year-old, with Newcastle having no intention of selling the striker who has three years left on his deal. Isak, who did not travel on Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia, has made it clear he wants to leave St. James' Park this summer. However, it has now been reported that Liverpool will not, at this time, be going back in for the Swede. The Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle wrote on X: "#LFC indeed won't be making a second bid for Alexander Isak as things stand given the clarity of Newcastle's swift and emphatic response. The Reds offered £110m." He has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the Magpies, with 23 of those coming last term in the Premier League. Isak also netted the second goal for Newcastle during the Carabao Cup final earlier this year against Liverpool, helping the Magpies to their first silverware in 70 years. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has reiterated he wants to keep the Magpies star striker on Tyneside. "He is still our player," said Howe in Seoul, South Korea during Newcastle's pre-season tour. "He's contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. "My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control. We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year." With Newcastle having yet to bring in a striker this summer, losing Isak would mean they need to bring in a minimum of two forwards. They value Isak at just shy of $200M ($197.4M), meaning the Reds bid fell short by around $39M. While they did add Anthony Elanga, Newcastle's efforts to strengthen their squad this summer have been thwarted by a number of different Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, who brought in Hugo Ekitike, a player who Newcastle had held an interest in since 2022. They also have Champions League football this term to deal with, with the last time they featured in the competition seeing them finish bottom of their group behind Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan.
