Olympic Equestrian Heath Ryan Claims He Was Trying To Save Horse That He Whipped Continuously In Video
The resurfaced clip from a few years back caught the attention of Equestrian Australia's Integrity Unit, which said it is launching an investigation into the actions of Ryan, a dressage competitor at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He finished 34th in the individual event.
The disturbing footage shows Ryan continuously striking the horse as the smacking blows resonate. Nico was hit at least 40 times, according to outlets. At one point the horse begins to kick up a leg with every impact.
Ryan claimed he was trying to save the uncooperative horse from the 'Knackery,' where destroyed animals are processed.
On Facebook he said a friend had dropped off the horse after a serious accident riding the animal.
'I am so sad this was caught on video,' Ryan wrote on June 11. 'If I had been thinking of myself I would have immediately just gotten off and sent Nico to the Knackery. That video was a life or death moment for Nico and of that I was very aware. I felt I genuinely had to try my very hardest to see if Nico would consider other options.'
Ryan said the 'problem child' animal did eventually respond without 'excessive driving aids' and he was able to find Nico a new home where he is 'thriving' with 'an exciting future.'
'If you think I did that flippantly you are wrong,' Ryan continued. 'I hated reaching out in those moments to Nico and asking the hard questions. That was the last place I wanted to be. I have never before ridden a horse that reacted like that and I certainly will never do it again. Was it worth it?? Well not for me however I am very happy for Nico. I need to add that this happened about 2 years ago and the video has been posted by an unhappy ex employee. All I can say is that this awful video was collateral damage of me from the bottom of my heart launching a rescue mission.'
The sport's international body, Fédération Équestre Internationale, also suspended him.

HAVANA, Cuba (AP) — The Cuban women's national volleyball team was denied a chance to play in a tournament in Puerto Rico following the new visa restrictions imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The Cuban Volleyball Federation said last week that the team, comprising 12 athletes, a referee, and several coaches, had their visa request denied and will be unable to attend the tournament later this month. 'The disappointment is huge because I train every day, every hour of training is leading up to this and dedicate myself to it,' national team player Laura Suarez told The Associated Press. 'It's really disappointing not to be able to participate in the competition, which is what I've been preparing myself for.(asterisk) Cuba was scheduled to play in the NORCECA Women's Final Four tournament in Manatí, Puerto Rico. The tournament includes the host nation, Mexico and Costa Rica and it awards ranking points toward qualification for the Volleyball Nations League. 'We were focused on the competition because it's right there,' said Dayana Martínez, another player. 'Arriving at the embassy and being denied the visa affects us a lot because that competition gives us points to improve our ranking,' The Cuban team's coach, Wilfredo Robinson, said the decision means his team is likely to miss out on the Nations League. 'The competition grants points for each match and at the end it all adds up,' Robinson said. 'In September we have another tournament and if we get there needing to achieve 80 or 100 points we are not going to be able to do it.' The United States added Cuba to a list of 12 countries with restrictions for entering the U.S. or its territories, effective from early June. It includes nationals from Afghanistan, the Republic of Congo, Iran, Venezuela, and other nations. 'Denial of visas is part of a racist and xenophobic list of visa restrictions,' Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez wrote on his X account. In a message sent to The Associated Press, the U.S. Embassy in Cuba stated that, according to its privacy policies, it could not comment on specific cases but that directives were being implemented to secure the borders and protect U.S. communities and citizens. The Cuban women's national team won back-to-back world championships in 1994 and 1998. It also won three Olympic golds in a row in Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Chicago to retire Candace Parker's jersey number
Former Tennessee women's basketball player Candace Parker will become the second player to have her jersey retired by two WNBA franchises. She will join Lindsay Whalen who had her jersey retired by Connecticut and Minnesota. Chicago is slated to retire Parker's No. 3 jersey on Aug. 25 during the Sky's game against Las Vegas. Los Angeles retired Parker's No. 3 jersey at halftime of its, 92-85, loss to Chicago on Sunday at Arena in Los Angeles, California. She also played for the Sky and Aces, leading all three organizations to WNBA championships. Parker played in the WNBA from 2008-23. She was selected No. 1 overall in the 2008 WNBA draft by Los Angeles. Parker was a 2008 WNBA Rookie of the Year, seven-time WNBA All-Star, league MVP during her rookie season and named WNBA MVP in 2013. Parker was a seven-time First-Team All-WNBA player and WNBA Finals MVP in 2016. The two-time Olympic gold medalist played at Tennessee from 2006-08 under head coach Pat Summitt. Caitlin Clark is considered a game-time decision for the Indiana Fever ahead of Tuesday's matchup at the Minnesota Lynx after missing two games with a left groin injury. She was listed as questionable by the team Monday. Clark did not appear to be present during the team's shootaround Tuesday, though Fever coach Stephanie White deemed the second-year guard a game-time decision for the contest. The Fever (8-8) split the back-to-back games Clark missed, first losing to the Los Angeles Sparks. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 20 points in the 85-75 defeat. However, the Fever followed that up with an 94-86 win over the Dallas Wings.
