Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith makes a major award watch list
Four Ohio State players have taken home the award that is handed out by the Maxwell Football Club since its inception. Howard "Hopalong" Cassidy won it in 1955, fullback Bob Ferguson took it home in 1961, Heisman winner Archie Griffin won in 1975, and Eddie George was the last to hold the Maxwell in 1995.
Obviously, being on the preseason watch list means little because names can be added and culled down as the season goes on, but you have to be on the list at some point to win it, so Smith has that going for him.
The superstar wide receiver hauled in 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns last season and had some of his biggest moments during the College Football Playoff national championship run. He should be poised to have another phenomenal year this fall as well as appointment television.

Ohio State announces its Iron Buckeye Awards for the 2025 season
The offseason is over, and Ohio State football practice has officially begun. Heading into fall camp, the Buckeyes have been working hard all summer to improve their physical and mental strength to prepare for the season ahead. Ohio State has long been known for awarding accolades, most notably the Buckeye Leaves added to players' helmets for outstanding play, a tradition started by none other than Woody Hayes himself. More recently, OSU has handed out the Iron Buckeye award, given in recognition of players who exhibit 'unquestionable training, dedication, determination, discipline, toughness and leadership' during offseason workouts. This year, the honor went to a total of eight players, two of whom were given the award last season. Sonny Style and Jeremiah Smith were the only two repeat honorees joining first timers Austin Siereveld, Kenyatta Jackson Jr., Lincoln Kienholz, Payton Pierce, Carnell Tate, and Jaylen McClain. It's nice to see Tate join Smith as part of the receiving unit. It was also interesting to see Lincoln Kienholz on the list. It's clear that he has his eyes set on making a run at being the starting quarterback and won't back down from competition. Julian Sayin may be the presumed starter, but Kienholz is going to force Ryan Day to think long and hard. The Buckeyes open the season in less than a month when Texas comes to Columbus for a rematch of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl. Iowa Hawkeyes QB Lands Major College Football Honor Before Season

Photo byTo start the season Cade McNamara was Iowa's starter. He turned in a brutal season, completing 60.5 percent of his pass attempts for 1,017 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. He suffered an injury that hampered his ability and availability, but he completed 71.7 percent of his passes for 475 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 150 yards and four scores. Heading into the college football offseason, adding help at the quarterback position was a clear priority for Ferentz and the Hawkeyes. They were able to do just that. Hank Brown was one addition in the transfer portal from the Auburn Tigers, giving the team a potential starting quarterback next season and the following year. However, it was another transfer portal addition that brought in Iowa's starting quarterback. Ferentz was able to land a transfer commitment from former South Dakota State quarterback Mark Gronowski. He is coming off of a 2024 season with the Jackrabbits that saw him throw for 2,721 yards, 23 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while completing 60.9 percent of his passes. With that being said, Gronowski has received a major honor before the start of the 2025 season. He was named to the Maxwell Award watchlist, which is an award that is given yearly to college football's most outstanding player. Simply being included on the watchlist is a big deal. Should he be able to play up to the level that seems to be expected of him, Iowa could be a team to watch in the Big Ten.
