Bengali Freedom Fighters Have Been Insulted In The Film: TMC Leader Kunal Ghosh On Kesari Chapter 2
Ghosh claimed that the film "insulted" Bengal's iconic freedom fighters by misrepresenting key historical facts.
The controversy began after a scene in the film allegedly changed the name of revolutionary Khudiram Bose to "Khudiram Singh", which sparked outrage. Ghosh did not hold back his anger, calling the portrayal a serious mistake. He said the film had "insulted" legendary revolutionaries like Khudiram Bose and Barindra Kumar Ghosh.
"Bengali freedom fighters have been insulted in the film. Khudiram Bose has been changed to Khudiram Singh. What is this? The basic facts and names have been distorted. Bengal's history of the freedom struggle and the history of its freedom fighters have been insulted in a planned manner," Ghosh said.
Calling for accountability, Ghosh demanded an apology from Akshay Kumar and the film's team. "We strongly oppose and condemn this. Akshay Kumar and the unit should apologise for this... Some people are talking about taking legal action. This is a normal thing; it will happen," he added.
Kesari Chapter 2 is based on the book The Case That Shook The Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat. It focuses on the story of lawyer C Sankaran Nair, played by Akshay Kumar, and events following the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The film also stars R. Madhavan and Ananya Panday.
The film, produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, performed well at the box office and is currently streaming on JioHotstar.

Bihar SIR: Day ahead of publication of draft roll, CEC assures voters on claims of inclusion and exclusion
A day ahead of the publication of draft electoral rolls in Bihar following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar assured voters in the State that all electors and political parties would be invited to give claims and objections from August 1 to September 1. 'The draft electoral rolls of Bihar are being published on Friday, August 1, at the CEC said in a message to voters. 'Physical as well as digital copies will also be given to all recognised political parties in Bihar in all 38 Districts by all the 38 District Election Officers (DEOs) of Bihar.' The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Bihar and 243 Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) will also be inviting electors or any recognised political parties in Bihar to come forward and give claims and objections from August 1 to September 1 for adding and removing names and correction of entries in the draft electoral rolls, the CEC added. The final electoral roll after the SIR exercise, which began on June 24, would be published on September 30. Of the 7.89 crore electors as on June 24, 2025, over 7.24 crore electors had submitted enumeration forms, indicating overwhelming participation, the poll body said in a statement. This, in effect, means that the names of 65 lakh voters would not make it to the August 1 draft roll. The EC said the reasons for names not being found in the rolls include death, permanent relocation and being enrolled at multiple places. The poll body said young electors, who have attained 18 years of age on July 1, 2025, or would be attaining 18 years on or before October 1, 2025, are being encouraged to file their application in Form 6, along with the prescribed Declaration Form. The commission said it would conduct special campaigns across Bihar from August 1 to September 1 to enrol such young electors, so that all eligible electors can be enrolled, and no one is left out. The SIR order on June 24 had said that the exercise would be carried out across the country beginning with Bihar. The contentious exercise has also been challenged in the Supreme Court. Opposition parties have branded it as National Register of Citizens (NRC) 'through backdoor'.

Mamata Banerjee announces hike in grant for Durga Puja committees to Rs 1.10 Lakh this year, over Rs 500 crore to be spent from exchequer
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced an allowance of Rupees 1.1 lakhs for each Durga Puja committee of the state. The government also spent more than Rupees 350 crores from the exchequer to this allowance last year. According to the state administration sources, the total number of enlisted Durga Puja committees in West Bengal is more than 45,000 and the state government will have to pay more than Rupees 500 crores for this allowance from the exchequer. Addressing a meeting of Durga Puja organisers, Banerjee said the decision aims to support the committees in organising Bengal's biggest festival and to acknowledge their contribution to cultural and community life. 'The government stands by the people. Durga Puja is not just a religious celebration; it is a cultural festival that unites everyone. We want to ensure the organisers can manage expenses without stress,' Banerjee said. The chief minister also announced, that like other years, Durga Puja Carnival will be held on October 5. Before that, on October 2, 3 and 4, immersion of the Durga idol should be completed. Last year, the Mamata Banerjee government gave Rupees 85,000 to each Puja committee and the amount was increased from 75,000 to 85,000. 'This year also, we got nothing in the budget (Central Budget). We are a poor state. However, we have decided to increase the allowance to 85 thousand. Next year will make it one lakh,' the chief minister said. However, this year she increased the allowance by Rupees 10,000 more, a cost of Rupees 50 crore more for the exchequer. The Chief Minister on Thursday also announced that like other years, this year also the Puja committees will have to pay nothing for any licenses including for a fire license. Last year, the puja committees got 75 per cent discount on electricity bill. This year, CM Banerjee said, electricity will be discounted to 80 per cent. A senior official of the Finance Department said, 'This is the last Durga Puja before the scheduled Assembly election in 2026. So, the ruling party wanted to attract Puja committees, to give them a hike of 25,000 from last year.' The allowance was Rupees 50,000 in 2021, which increased by Rupees 10,000 each in 2022 and 2023. Last year in 2024, it increased Rupees 15,000 and this year it increased Rupees 25,000. The Chief Minister also highlighted the hardships faced by Bengali-speaking individuals in various states across the country. My request to all Puja committees is that they should provide new garments to those who faced atrocities in different states for speaking in Bengali,' CM Banerjee said.
