Teen troubles rising: Malaysia sees alarming spike in rape, incest & depression
He said that based on last year's statistics, rape and incest cases involving adolescents had increased, with 252 cases reported compared to 206 in 2023.
"Even more worrying is that nearly 91 per cent of these cases occurred with mutual consent between underage teenagers.
"The sharp rise in rape and incest cases among minors is very alarming. If left unchecked, the country may face a severe social emergency that could destroy the future of the younger generation," he said here today.
Mohd Na'im said this at the launch of the 2025 national-level Social Awareness Roadshow (J-KIS), which was also attended by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) director-general Datuk Dr Sirajuddin Suhaimee.
On the issue of depression among youths, Mohd Na'im said that if not addressed, it could lead to serious consequences, including contributing to suicide cases.
He said records showed that such cases increased to 1,087 in 2023 from 981 in the previous year.
At the same time, Mohd Na'im expressed hope that the J-KIS programme launched today, and similar initiatives, could be expanded to create a lasting impact on society.
Meanwhile, Sirajuddin said the J-KIS programme is aimed at enhancing knowledge and awareness among youths on social issues through engaging sessions.
Among the sessions organised were 'Jiwa Kacau: Kongsi atau Pendam?','Mengurus Medsos', 'Anda, Dakwah & LGBT' as well as 'Pengantunan Seksual (Sexual Grooming)', presented by experts and experienced speakers to over 800 participants.
"This programme is in line with the government's aspirations through the Islam Mekar di Bumi Malaysia (Islam flourishes in Malaysia) framework, which emphasises holistic, integrity-driven, and responsible human development in driving the country's progress," he said.
The J-KIS programme is organised by Jakim in collaboration with several agencies, including the Education Ministry, Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya) and Selangor Education Departments, and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). – BERNAMA

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The education ministry and public services department have been urged to review the implementation of a new 25km 'straight-line' travel allowance rule for teachers in Sabah. The allowance for teachers travelling from their home to their schools is capped at a travel distance of 25km, measured as a straight line on a map rather than the actual distance covered by road. The Sabah government teachers' union (KGKS) said this rule cannot be implemented rigidly in Sabah given the state's hilly terrain and lack of infrastructure, like roads. KGKS president Gundohing Murkam Hussien cited the example of teachers working at SK Penimbawan Tuaran, which can be reached by boat or road, The Borneo Post reported. 'The first way is by boat along the river, which takes between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on weather conditions. The second is to use a car and drive for 78km. 'This means that strictly enforcing the 25km requirement is not appropriate. After considering the views of all KGKS members, the union has agreed to appeal to the ministry to review this issue,' he said. Gundohing said several teachers under KGKS were taking home lower salaries now because of this rule. Previously, they were given the travel allowance after it had been verified by the district education office. Gundohing also said some teachers were ordered to repay the allowances they had 'wrongly' received, forcing a few of them to apply for bank loans or sell their cars to pay off the amount. 'Of course, the teachers involved have been badly affected, leading to a decrease in their enthusiasm for work. 'All those involved in the process (of approving the allowances for the teachers) should by right be held responsible and share the cost of these claims,' he said.

Education Ministry to take stern action over upside-down Jalur Gemilang incident in PD school
KOTA BARU: The Education Ministry will take firm action once it receives the full investigation report on the incident where the Jalur Gemilang flag was flown upside down at a vernacular school in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, on Friday (Aug 1). Its Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the incident was a serious issue, as all parties had been repeatedly reminded of the importance and sensitivity of the national flag. "We are currently awaiting the result of the full investigation. I want to stress that once we receive the complete report, we will take stern action. "The Education Ministry has repeatedly reminded everyone about the sensitivity, responsibility, and commitment involved in displaying the Jalur Gemilang. Study needed before implementing early education for five-year-olds, says Fadhlina
KOTA BARU: The Education Ministry is examining the technical and operational aspects before the implementation of early childhood education starting at the age of five under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the move is important to ensure the implementation of the policy runs smoothly and meets the objective of strengthening the country's early education foundation. She said the policy is ready and is being examined by her ministry in depth to ensure the implementation will bring a positive impact.
