Ed Sheeran showcases his own artwork in London gallery
LONDON : British pop star Ed Sheeran has swapped a microphone for paint brushes, with the fruits of his endeavours to go on display later this week, the London gallery exhibiting his works confirmed Wednesday.
The abstract pieces – colourful Jackson Pollock-esque paintings and prints – will be available to buy, with part of the proceeds going to the Ed Sheeran Foundation, which supports musical education in schools.
They are also set to be exhibited at Heni art gallery in central London from Friday until Aug 1, with the collection called 'Cosmic Carpark Paintings', the gallery said.
Sheeran, 34, behind smash hits like 'Shape of You' and 'Perfect', took to social media earlier this week to share the news, explaining he worked on the paintings last year in between shows.
He also shared a video of his painting process at work, showing him splashing large canvases with brightly coloured paint.
'I love painting, more for fun and to give to friends, but this time I was encouraged to do a show of them by @damienhirst and @heni,' he posted on Instagram.
'I paint when I'm not working on a record, just to do something creative with my brain. And it's mostly just splashing colours on canvases, think Jackson Pollock but with colourful house paint.'
Sheeran added that did not make him 'an artist' but noted that he loves 'making art' and that 'it makes me feel great, and I love the end result'.
Heni, which said Sheeran's 'painting journey' began in 2019 following his record-breaking Divide tour, noted he used one of his earlier creations as the official artwork for his single 'Afterglow' in 2020.
The colourful pieces in his debut collection were 'inspired by celestial patterns' and painted in a disused London carpark last year, it added.
Singer, songwriter, and performer Sheeran is one of the most listened to artists in the world.
He also makes the list of the 40 richest people under 40 in the UK, with a fortune estimated at £370 million, according to the Sunday Times' latest annual wealth rankings of Britons.

Macron to rekindle relationship with Francophile King Charles on UK visit

(AP pic) LONDON : French-speaking King Charles III, who is hosting President Emmanuel Macron for a state visit starting on Tuesday, professes a long-standing love of France, describing it as 'an essential part' of his life. The visit, at the invitation of the monarch, is a rare privilege full of spectacular pomp and circumstance and an opportunity to strengthen a bilateral relationship which the king called 'indispensable' during his visit to France in September 2023. That visit, hailed as a symbol of 'cordial detente' after Brexit, demonstrated a closeness between the two heads of state on issues such as Ukraine, but also on a personal level. 'If you see their body language, and this was particularly noticeable during the state visit… it does seem that they get on tremendously well,' said monarchy expert Richard Fitzwilliams. Macron touched the monarch on the shoulder several times during the visit, a casual gesture unthinkable in the time of Elizabeth II, but the king took no offence. Macron and his wife will visit the Palace of Westminster in London on Tuesday, where the French president will address parliamentarians for a 'very political' speech, according to the Elysee Palace. On Wednesday, Emmanuel Macron will lay flowers on the grave of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022, at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and will tour the gardens. The world No 1 took his overall major total to four, three of which have come in the past two years, as he moved to within a US Open victory of completing the career Grand Slam. Rory McIlroy said Scheffler's dominant run over the past two years, which includes 10 PGA Tour wins and an Olympic gold medal, has only been matched by 'two or three players in the history of the game.' However, the American said he has a long way to go to match the 15-time major champion. 'I still think they're a bit silly. Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. I just got one-fourth of the way there,' said Scheffler after lifting the Claret Jug. 'I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf.' 'But at the end of the day, it doesn't fulfill the deepest desires of my heart.' 'Hiccup' overcome Scheffler is making the extraordinary look serene as he won for the fourth time in his last 11 events. 'I grew up waking up early to watch this tournament on TV, just hoping and dreaming I would get the chance to come play in this championship,' added Scheffler. 'Even after the little hiccup there on the eighth hole, we bounced back really quick with a birdie on nine and got things back in gear pretty quick. 'Playing this game, it's a battle within yourself all the time to try and get the most out of your game and yourself. This week, I did a really good job of hanging in there mentally and playing some good golf.'
