LONDON : British pop star Ed Sheeran has swapped a microphone for paint brushes, with the fruits of his endeavours to go on display later this week, the London gallery exhibiting his works confirmed Wednesday.
The abstract pieces – colourful Jackson Pollock-esque paintings and prints – will be available to buy, with part of the proceeds going to the Ed Sheeran Foundation, which supports musical education in schools.
They are also set to be exhibited at Heni art gallery in central London from Friday until Aug 1, with the collection called 'Cosmic Carpark Paintings', the gallery said.
Sheeran, 34, behind smash hits like 'Shape of You' and 'Perfect', took to social media earlier this week to share the news, explaining he worked on the paintings last year in between shows.
He also shared a video of his painting process at work, showing him splashing large canvases with brightly coloured paint.
'I love painting, more for fun and to give to friends, but this time I was encouraged to do a show of them by @damienhirst and @heni,' he posted on Instagram.
'I paint when I'm not working on a record, just to do something creative with my brain. And it's mostly just splashing colours on canvases, think Jackson Pollock but with colourful house paint.'
Sheeran added that did not make him 'an artist' but noted that he loves 'making art' and that 'it makes me feel great, and I love the end result'.
Heni, which said Sheeran's 'painting journey' began in 2019 following his record-breaking Divide tour, noted he used one of his earlier creations as the official artwork for his single 'Afterglow' in 2020.
The colourful pieces in his debut collection were 'inspired by celestial patterns' and painted in a disused London carpark last year, it added.
Singer, songwriter, and performer Sheeran is one of the most listened to artists in the world.
He also makes the list of the 40 richest people under 40 in the UK, with a fortune estimated at £370 million, according to the Sunday Times' latest annual wealth rankings of Britons.

‘Menamakanmu Cinta': Siti Nurhaliza, Ade Govinda reunite for wedding-ready love ballad (VIDEO)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 — Renowned Malaysian singer Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza and celebrated Indonesian composer Ade Govinda have returned to captivate fans with their latest collaboration, Menamakanmu Cinta, an emotionally driven love song. In a statement today, Siti Nurhaliza said the new single carries a positive message about appreciating loved ones. 'I hope this song will be enjoyed by all listeners and become a love anthem that brings together memories and emotions. It is also a reminder to cherish love in our lives. 'It was created with deep emotion and intention, with each lyric reflecting the beauty of true love,' she said. This is not their first collaboration — Ade previously wrote three songs for the national songstress for her 2014 album Fragmen, namely Terbaik Bagimu, Engkau and Tak Pernah Ragu. Ade, meanwhile, said working with the mother of two was a truly special experience. 'The initial idea for this song came from my desire to create a love song that could be sung at any wedding by anyone celebrating love. Working with Datuk Seri Siti was fast and enjoyable, and allowed me to explore her vocal range in an extraordinary way in a short period of time,' he said in a statement. He also expressed hope that Menamakanmu Cinta would become the soundtrack of life for anyone in love. 'It's not just about melody or lyrics, but a heartfelt expression that touches the soul and captures the depth of emotion between couples,' he added. — Bernama

Macron to rekindle relationship with Francophile King Charles on UK visit

Emmanuel Macron is the first European leader to be invited for a state visit since King Charles assumed the throne. (AP pic) LONDON : French-speaking King Charles III, who is hosting President Emmanuel Macron for a state visit starting on Tuesday, professes a long-standing love of France, describing it as 'an essential part' of his life. The visit, at the invitation of the monarch, is a rare privilege full of spectacular pomp and circumstance and an opportunity to strengthen a bilateral relationship which the king called 'indispensable' during his visit to France in September 2023. That visit, hailed as a symbol of 'cordial detente' after Brexit, demonstrated a closeness between the two heads of state on issues such as Ukraine, but also on a personal level. 'If you see their body language, and this was particularly noticeable during the state visit… it does seem that they get on tremendously well,' said monarchy expert Richard Fitzwilliams. Macron touched the monarch on the shoulder several times during the visit, a casual gesture unthinkable in the time of Elizabeth II, but the king took no offence. Brigitte Macron and Queen Camilla, who share a love of literature, exchange kisses whenever they meet, even though official protocol dictates a curtsy. As well as Ukraine, the two men also share common ground on topics such as the environment. 'Inspired and encouraged by my grandmother's and my late mother's example, France has been an essential part of the fabric of my own life for as long as I can remember,' Charles declared before the French Senate in September 2023, in a speech delivered largely in French, which earned him a standing ovation. Like his mother, Elizabeth II, who often visited France and met every French president from Vincent Auriol to Macron, Charles III learnt French from childhood. He reads it fluently and speaks it with a hint of an accent. La vie en rose He has made more than 35 official visits to France since the 1970s, and according to him, Edith Piaf's 'La Vie en rose' remains one of his favourite songs. Macron is the first European leader to be invited for a state visit since Charles III assumed the throne. The king's first state visit abroad was originally scheduled to also take place in France in March 2023 but was postponed due to social unrest. The French couple's state visit will take place at Windsor Castle, as Buckingham Palace is undergoing renovations, and will follow the standard schedule. There are on average two of these visits per year, and preparation for them generally takes around a year. The Prince and Princess of Wales will greet the French presidential couple on landing and accompany them on the journey to Windsor, west of London, where they will be officially welcomed by the King and Queen. They will join a carriage procession through the town, attend a military parade and take lunch with the royal family at the castle. Macron and his wife will visit the Palace of Westminster in London on Tuesday, where the French president will address parliamentarians for a 'very political' speech, according to the Elysee Palace. The day will end with a state dinner, including speeches by the King and the French leader in front of some 150 guests. On Wednesday, Emmanuel Macron will lay flowers on the grave of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September 2022, at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and will tour the gardens. He will attend Thursday's Franco-British summit, the second since they resumed in 2023 after being suspended due to Brexit, before leaving with his wife later in the day. US President Donald Trump has also been invited for a state visit this year and is expected in September, but no date has yet been officially announced.

Tiger comparisons ‘silly' for dominant Scheffler

Fans greet Scottie Scheffler as he approaches the 17th tee during the British Open's final round at the Royal Portrush Golf Club. (AP pic) PORTRUSH : Scottie Scheffler dismissed comparisons of his grip on golf to Tiger Woods' prime as 'silly' after storming to his first British Open on Sunday. The world No 1 took his overall major total to four, three of which have come in the past two years, as he moved to within a US Open victory of completing the career Grand Slam. Rory McIlroy said Scheffler's dominant run over the past two years, which includes 10 PGA Tour wins and an Olympic gold medal, has only been matched by 'two or three players in the history of the game.' However, the American said he has a long way to go to match the 15-time major champion. 'I still think they're a bit silly. Tiger won, what, 15 majors? This is my fourth. I just got one-fourth of the way there,' said Scheffler after lifting the Claret Jug. 'I think Tiger stands alone in the game of golf. He was inspirational for me growing up. He was a very, very talented guy, and he was a special person to be able to be as good as he was at the game of golf.' Scheffler began the week at Royal Portrush by surprising reporters with comments that his life is 'not a fulfilling one' despite his standing in the sport. He celebrated another dominant performance, which saw him cruise to victory by four shots after shooting 17 under par, with his wife Meredith and one-year-old son Bennett. And Scheffler doubled down that winning tournaments is not what defines him. 'Just because you win a golf tournament or accomplish something, it doesn't make you happy. Maybe for a few moments, maybe for a few days, but at the end of the day, there's more to life than playing golf,' he added. 'Am I grateful for it? Do I enjoy it? Oh, my gosh, yes, this is a cool feeling. I can't wait to get home and celebrate this championship with the people that have helped me along the way. 'But at the end of the day, it doesn't fulfill the deepest desires of my heart.' 'Hiccup' overcome Scheffler is making the extraordinary look serene as he won for the fourth time in his last 11 events. However, lifting the Claret Jug held a greater significance after his memories of waking up early to follow the British Open across the Atlantic Ocean as a child. 'I grew up waking up early to watch this tournament on TV, just hoping and dreaming I would get the chance to come play in this championship,' added Scheffler. He birdied three of his first five holes to snuff out any possibility that he would not convert his four-shot overnight lead into victory. Even an uncharacteristic misjudgement when he failed to get out of a fairway bunker at the eighth, which led to a double bogey, could derail Scheffler's charge. 'I felt a good amount of peace today. I felt very in control of how I was playing. I was very comfortable with my game,' he said. 'Even after the little hiccup there on the eighth hole, we bounced back really quick with a birdie on nine and got things back in gear pretty quick. 'Playing this game, it's a battle within yourself all the time to try and get the most out of your game and yourself. This week, I did a really good job of hanging in there mentally and playing some good golf.'
