AIIMS Raipur nurse develops patented respiratory device to curb airborne infections
The Indian Patent Office in New Delhi granted a utility patent for the device.
The HOAC Combo is a closed-system respiratory support unit designed to reduce the risk of airborne infections during nebulisation, sputum sampling, incentive spirometry, and low-flow oxygen therapy. It offers protection to both patients and healthcare workers.
The HOAC device is currently in the functional prototype development phase, with efforts underway to secure funding.
This will be followed by pilot studies and clinical validation, paving the way for its large-scale implementation in India and globally.
Arokiaraj U showcased this device at the India Innovation Summit 2025, held on March 18–19 at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, New Delhi. The Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) organised the summit.
The device has also been published on the ATLAS of Innovation platform, a research platform supporting the development of new technologies for TB elimination.
Lt. Gen. Ashok Jindal (Retd), Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Raipur, congratulated Arokiaraj, calling the development a significant achievement for AIIMS Raipur. AIIMS Raipur nominated Arokiaraj for the National Florence Nightingale Award and the National Science Award 2025 in recognition of his contribution.
Arokiaraj expressed gratitude to the Medical Superintendent, the CTVS department, and the AIIMS administration for their support and guidance.

Professor (Dr) Abhiruchi Galhotra, Dean (Research), said the partnership would encourage faculty and residents to take part in advanced research that combines healthcare and digital technology to improve services. The masterclass featured talks on emerging topics such as the evolution of healthcare through data and AI, neural networks and AI applications, and using AI and machine learning to reduce ventilator alarm fatigue in critical care. Experts also gave live demonstrations on 3D modelling from radiology images, digital prescriptions using optical character recognition and voice-to-text tools, clinical decision support systems, and the use of augmented and virtual reality in healthcare. Faculty from various departments presented their AI-based projects and sought technical and financial support from IIT Indore. Scientists from the DRISHTI Foundation acknowledged these proposals and agreed to take them forward. The conference focused on "Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality, and Robotics in Healthcare: Emerging Pathways from Diagnosis to Therapy" and brought together around 40 global leaders and domain experts. Automated Triage in Emergency Room (ER): Another collaboration between AIIMS Raipur and IIT Bhilai, this system uses predictive models to categorise patients based on potential adverse outcomes, improving operational efficiency and patient safety in the emergency department. Lt Gen Jindal also emphasised the role of AI-powered remote monitoring in strengthening public health systems, especially in rural and underserved regions. He stated that these systems are not just technological upgrades but equity-driven interventions that enable scalable, inclusive, and preventive care across India. Rare heart surgery on 6-month-old gets medical journal entry honour
Kolkata: The case of a rare and complex heart surgery on a six-month-old girl in a Kolkata hospital was published by the World Journal of Paediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery due to the rarity of the procedure on such a young child. Conducted a few months ago, doctors kept following the case up till they were satisfied with the recovery for presenting the case to the international journal. According to the parents, the baby struggled to breathe, did not feed properly, and was always tired. She was not gaining weight either. They brought her to BM Birla Heart Hospital in Kolkata, where doctors found the infant suffering from left main coronary artery stenosis, a rare congenital heart defect. In this condition, the main artery that supplies blood to the heart is dangerously narrow, which can lead to heart failure if not treated properly. Investigation reports revealed that her heart was working at only 20% capacity, and she needed urgent surgery. The congenital heart condition of the child itself is rare," said Daga. Despite the challenges, the procedure went smoothly. During multiple follow-ups, doctors found significant improvement in the baby's heart function. During the latest check-up, her heart was pumping with 55% efficiency, which is close to normal. It is expected to improve further. "We are happy that the child is doing well. She will grow up like any other child. We will still be following up on her periodically," said Daga. "To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of off-pump CABG performed in an infant with congenital LM coronary artery stenosis. The success of this technique highlights off-pump CABG as a feasible, less invasive option for revascularisation in select cases of paediatric coronary artery disease," concluded the case report in the journal co-authored by doctors Daga, Nitish Kumar, Subhendu Mandal, Gaur Hari Das, Pravir Kumar Das, Anurag Agarwal, and Madhurima Ghosh. A CTVS professor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata said that the CABG procedure in a child as young as six months old was rare and challenging.
