We did it! Tomorrow is summer solstice, the longest day of the year. To celebrate our extra hours, sun-loving New Yorkers can soak up sizzling rays on Manhattan's new beach, party like a Swede, or (perhaps most enticing) sip the best margaritas in NYC.
If Kendal Jenner has her way, all the West Village girlies and their besties will flock to her tequila-fueled bar crawl across Lower Manhattan. Beginning Friday, June 20, the notorious star's liquor brand 818 Tequila will host a 'Sip Into Summer' series all weekend long, featuring notable watering holes like historic White Horse Tavern and full glam Sweet Linda, among others mapped below.
Slip out of the office early to toast the official start of summer with tequila cocktails like spicy watermelon margaritas and tequila mules — maybe encourage your coworkers to cut loose, too. Even St. Tropez Wine Bar, the Provençal grape destination, created a custom cocktail called Spicy Solstice to set your summer nights ablaze.
Of course, event organizers hope you hop across lower Manhattan to taste every agave concoction, but you could always park it at your favorite spot to take full advantage of happy hour drink specials. Downtown at Blue Haven South, the 818 Daisy (tequila, citrus, liqueur) is only $12, while White Horse Tavern will be slinging refreshing cucumber margaritas for $17. Most other drinks on the boozy path ring up between $19 and $22.

But unfortunately for those on a budget, it also boasts a VIP price tag of around £22.50 a bottle. However, luckily for those looking to cut costs on their alcohol stash, supermarkets have released a variety of similar styles that are much more cost-effective. So, with the weather heating up and picnic season in full swing, here, Fabulous' Senior Writer and self-proclaimed wine fanatic, Abby Wilson, tests out six of the high-street's best bottles. Breath of Paradise £10.99, Lidl 11 Lidl's offering scored a poor rating of 1 out of five Credit: George Keller I was excited to try the latest Whispering Angel dupe that hit Lidl shelves only recently, and while it looks practically the same, I have to say, I was thoroughly disappointed. Yes, it's a nice bottle, but this good-looking blush tribute is not getting a thumbs up from me. This Whispering wannabe might have the vibe of the real thing but unfortunately, it lacks the flavour. If you like wine that's bitter and vinegary, this Provençal tipple could be for you. Yes, it will keep your bank account in the pink, but it lacks depth and to be totally honest, has a nasty acidic taste that quite frankly, tastes cheap. 'Aldi, are you ok hun' wine pro exclaims as she calls store's £6.99 pink bubbles a 'crowd pleaser' you need to snap up For me, Lidl normally smash it out the park with their dupes, but in my opinion, this is simply style over substance. Unfortunately, it's not giving me a 'Breath of Paradise'. The only thing I'm noticing is a sigh of disappointment. There's not much of a fruity flavour and it definitely needs a bit of lemonade to sweeten it up. While aesthetically it looks the best of the bunch, the taste makes it the biggest loser in my books. But if you're wanting to scrimp on rosé, the Tesco Finest Provence Rosé may, or may not, be one to try. Where my taste buds are concerned, it's dry, weak and watery, with a somewhat tangy aftertaste. Or do you need something to go with a decadent dessert? The incredible value Andrew Peace Signature Black Label Chardonnay from Morrisons is hugely versatile. What's more, it's celebrated by critics and is only £5.50 a bottle making it instantly affordable. Eco friendly vegan wine for the planet lover Hidden Sea Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 (14.5% abv), Australia, Co-op, £10 Did you know there's a wine brand that actually saves the sea? Lush, black fruit with a touch of spicy oak, this ripe, dark berry-fruit Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon by Hidden Sea boasts supple tannins that add elegance and complexity. I'm normally a huge fan of the Tesco Finest range and can't get enough of their epic microwave meals that are perfect for lazy nights, but this own-brand buy hasn't cut the mustard for me. It's said to emit 'delicious stone fruit flavours' and has been hailed as 'crisp and delicate', but I'm not getting any of that with this beverage. The only upside is that it's cheap. You'll be able to enjoy a summer BBQ and toast to all the cash you've cashed with this, so I suppose if I had to, I could force it down if it meant saving a few pounds. Ranking: 3/5 Château Roquefeuille Côtes de Provence St Victoire £14, Tesco 11 Things looked up with this Château Roquefeuille Credit: George Keller If you're after a full body rosé wine, this bottle of Château Roquefeuille Côtes de Provence St Victoire should be one to add to your shopping list. It's got good depth and a nice sweetness, with a fruity flavour of fresh nectarine. You'll now be able to nab it for just £12, making it over a tenner cheaper than the real deal Abby Wilson As well as having soaring character, with an intense, lasting taste, the expensive-looking bottle is sure to impress your dinner party guests. It's a gem of a wine that's spot on when paired with a summer salad or a creamy pasta for an alfresco meal on a balmy night. At £14, it's not the cheapest of the bunch - but if you've got a Clubcard, you'll need to move quickly, as you'll now be able to nab it for just £12, making it over a tenner cheaper than the real deal. Ranking: 3.5/5 Les Sarrins Côtes de Provence Rosé £15, Tesco 11 Another Tesco buy, Les Sarrins has a sharp but round flavour Credit: George Keller For those after a wonder-wine that screams liquid sunshine, look no further. Wine enthusiasts will need to get their hands on a bottle of Les Sarrins Côtes de Provence Rosé, which has a sharp but round flavour. It's more than just a copycat - its deep flavour almost gave me goosebumps (in a good way). It covers all bases - it's a brilliant all-rounder wine that is sure to be liked by many at your next outdoor function. It'll get you ahead of the A-list but that's not all, as it's also a lovely bottle that's perfect for picnics and pre-drinks in the garden. Yes, it's not a mega bargain, but it's refreshing, elegant and gluggable, making it brilliant for those looking for a luxury pale pink wine that will dance on your tastebuds. Ranking: 4/5 La Balconne Organic Provence Rosé £18, M&S 11 M&S scored highly with 4.5 out of five Credit: George Keller If you can't afford to splash the cash on Whispering Angel, here's a wannabe that is well worth raving about. The La Balconne Organic Provence Rosé has been hailed by M&S bosses as 'elegant' and 'charming', and I have to say, I agree. It reaches near the top of the dupe test with flying colours. It has a light but luscious flavour, with a nice tang that had me reaching for more. It's floral and fruity, with mouth-watering tastes of berries and wild herbs. Ranking: 4.5/5 Screaming Devil £12.97, Asda 11 But it was Asda's high-class rosé that took the top spot Credit: George Keller But if you're eager to nab a rosé that's bold but not too sharp, with a strong flavour that hits you straight away, look no further. This Screaming Devil Côtes de Provence not only has a great name, but is of great value too. It's just like the costly celestial sip, but thankfully, a lot cheaper. This high-class bottle will save you an impressive £9.53 and not only that, it's also sure to make summer picnics in the park much more straightforward too. This thirst slacker from Asda is sure to ruffle the feathers of the big-name bottle Abby Wilson Thanks to the handy glass stopper, there's no need for a corkscrew, so you'll never find yourself desperately Googling hacks to remove a cork again - phew. It's a lovely, modern bottle and has a sweet and refreshing flavour of white peach. As well as being vibrant, this thirst slacker from Asda is sure to ruffle the feathers of the big-name bottle, and has a tasty zest that left me pouring a second (and third) glass within a matter of minutes. So if you can't make it to the South of France this summer, this dupe-tastic buy is a real winner and one that you'll definitely want to stock up on this season. Zohran Mamdani's social media strategy was about more than viral videos

Sitting on the subway and holding a MetroCard as a microphone, Zohran Mamdani had a hot take for New York City: that he should be its next mayor. The scene was from a June ' Subway Takes ' TikTok video that amassed more than 3 million views — part of a broader push by Mamdani to meet voters where they lived online. By the time his grassroots campaign reached primary day, he had won the backing of major social media figures like Emily Ratajkowski and engaged with voters through popular accounts like Pop Crave. Thousands expressed enthusiasm for his candidacy in comments on his dozens of social media videos, which experts say pitched his platform and personality to voters so convincingly that he outpaced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in polls before beating him in a sweeping primary win. When the 33-year-old state lawmaker, then little known, first announced his mayoral candidacy last fall, he was considered a long shot. Mamdani was a self-described democratic socialist and deeply critical of Israel's actions in Gaza — factors that made him an unlikely Democratic candidate at a time when the party has been veering away from left-leaning values. But in the months leading up to Tuesday's election, Mamdani had skyrocketed from obscurity to internet fame, amassing more than 1 million followers on Instagram, as well as hundreds of thousands on TikTok and X. Though his viral social media campaign has echoes of Kamala Harris' own meme-filled run, analysts say Mamdani's exhibited key differences that helped usher him to real victory. 'If you ask voters, 'Why did you vote for Mamdani?' ... I don't think they're going to tell us, 'Oh, because I saw some cute thing on social media,'' said Jonathan Nagler, a politics professor at New York University and the co-director of its Center for Social Media and Politics. 'I think they're going to say what actually influenced them is because they learned something on social media about policies he had that mattered to them.' In his viral videos, Mamdani makes his hopes for the city clear: to lower the cost of living by raising taxes on the richest New Yorkers. His core campaign promises — rent freezes, fast and free buses, universal child care — have been the bedrock of his online platform. The more policy-focused online discussion stands apart from the content that defined Harris' online campaign, which included the aesthetics of Charli XCX's Brat and viral nonpolicy soundbites like Harris' reference to falling out of a 'coconut tree.' But along with policy, Mamdani also added personal flair to his online campaigning. In one recent video, Mamdani dapped up New Yorkers as he walked Manhattan from tip to tip, saying that residents 'deserve a mayor they can see, they can hear, they can even yell at.' He explained ranked-choice voting while speaking fluent Hindi in another video, complete with playful South Asian pop culture references. And when his campaign became the first to reach the $8 million spending cap in this year's mayoral race, Mamdani posted a video urging viewers to stop donating and volunteer to canvass instead. Anthony DiMieri, a filmmaker who works on Mamdani's campaign videos, said part of the mayoral candidate's popularity comes from the consistency of his character on and off camera. Mamdani is also highly involved in the video ideation process, he said, and will often add in spontaneous jokes or ideas during shooting. 'We met people on the campaign trail who said they joined because of the videos. We were like, 'What brought you here?' and they're like, 'I just loved his videos' and 'I haven't seen anybody like this,'' DiMieri said. 'We've all had a lot of fun doing this work, and I think the fun we're having is translating to audiences.' The momentum grew offline, too, as tens of thousands of volunteers showed up to door-knock for Mamdani in their neighborhoods. Online, his supporters shared stories of how they convinced their family, friends and neighbors to rank him first. Pranjal Jain, a digital strategist who worked on influencer strategy for Harris' vice presidential campaign in 2020, said Mamdani's social presence 'dismantles the ivory tower' that so many politicians keep themselves in. He's meeting New Yorkers on the streets with a warm smile, she said, and speaking to them like they're his peers. 'He is so smiley, he's so giggly. He's always hugging people,' Jain said. 'He's just running a grassroots and community-driven campaign, and I think his body language embodies that. Like, I've never seen Cuomo hug anyone in my entire life.' Experts agreed that the personality that shone through in Mamdani's videos effectively captured his audience in a way that Cuomo couldn't. 'It's not only about online or social media presence and filming spectacular actions,' said Magdalena Wojcieszak, a communication professor at the University of California Davis. 'It's also the fact that Mamdani is a very young 'digital native' outsider who has the charisma, humor, and personable nature that many politicians across the political aisle lack partly due to their age, political experience, and being seen as part of the 'establishment.'' Similar to Harris and President Donald Trump during their presidential campaigns, Mamdani has also been backed by online influencers and celebrities, appearing in videos with personalities ranging from Saturday Night Live cast member Sarah Sherman to left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. But Jain said Mamdani's influencer collaborations worked because these videos still incorporated talk of his policies and positions as opposed to relying on 'fluff.' He took a different approach to Harris' campaign, which she said failed despite being backed by ' Brat summer ' and celebrity appearances because those partnerships didn't meaningfully showcase why they aligned with Harris as a candidate. Throughout his campaign, clips of his mayoral debates, including his handling of questions pressing him on his opinions on Israel and his searing critiques of Cuomo, also became fodder for memes and discourse that propelled him further into online popularity. Meanwhile, Mamdani has remained firm on some of the most controversial stances in establishment American politics: He has characterized Israel's actions in Gaza as 'genocide' and described the phrase 'globalize the intifada' as capturing 'a desperate desire for equality and equal rights in standing up for Palestinian human rights' — positions that have garnered him accusations of antisemitism. 'It pains me to be painted as if I am somehow in opposition to the very Jewish New Yorkers that I know and love and that are such a key part of this city,' Mamdani said last week at an event in Manhattan, where he also shared that he has gotten anti-Muslim death threats to himself and his family. Online, Mamdani has also faced increasing Islamophobic rhetoric from right-wing commentators and politicians. After his victory Tuesday, X was inundated with posts calling him a ' Muslim jihadist ' and comparing his win to the 9/11 terror attacks. To Jain, Tuesday's election was proof that Mamdani's viability as a candidate didn't hinge on his willingness to budge on his beliefs, such as his democratic socialist agenda and his support for Palestinians. 'I think it's really admirable that he stuck to his values. And I think that's what people want to see. No more of this centrist bulls---, right? It's important that we are able to see our politicians' opinions so we know if they're reflected in us or not,' Jain said. 'I feel like he ran a campaign because he believes that he as his most authentic self, really following his values, can help New York, rather than just pandering to try to get in office.'

From Neapolitan-style rounds to classic dollar slices, New Yorkers take pizza very seriously. And, thankfully, so do the folks over at the Best Pizza Awards, a Europe-based awards body founded in 2015 by a Polish neuroscientist and an Italian gastronomist, which celebrates the "sacred" art of pizza-making and recognizes the world's top pizza chefs. Back for the third year, the 2025 awards ceremony took place yesterday, June 25 in Milan, Italy, with a global voting panel of 512 experts from 60 countries to "ensure transparency and eliminate commercial influence." And proving that said panel has exceptionally good taste, those 'za experts highlighted six New York pizza joints as some of the best in the world. Though the top three was, unsurprisingly, dominated by Italian pizzaiolos—Francesco Martucci of I Masanielli, Franco Pepe of Pepe in Grani and Gabriele Bonci of Pizzarium in Rome—this year's tasty selection also spotlighted NYC chefs like Anthony Mangieri of Una Pizza Napoletana (who previously appeared in the 2023 and 2024 installments, but hit a high of No. 17 this year), Mark Iacono of Lucali (No. 25), Wylie Dufresne of Stretch Pizza (No. 27), Massimo Laveglia of L'Industrie Pizza (No. 34), Giorgia Caporuscio of Don Antonio (No. 52) and Frank Tuttolomondo of Mama's TOO! (No. 95). L'Industrie's Massimo Laveglia was also singled out for a special award, for those who have excelled in specific areas of the craft: "The Best Street Pizza" in the world. Other specialty winners include Isabella De Cham for "The Best Fried Pizza," Ciccio Vitiello for "The Best Science Pizza" and Pier Daniele Seu for "The Best Pastry Pizza," all hailing from Italy. "This year's The Best Pizza Awards has captured the true spirit of pizza: timeless, yet constantly evolving; deeply rooted in tradition, yet always open to new ideas and innovations.
