JOHOR BARU: Johor contributed the highest value of agricultural output nationwide, with sales reaching RM27.2bil last year, says a state executive councillor.
Johor agriculture, agro-based industry and rural development committee chairman Datuk Zahari Sarip (pic) said the figure was based on the 2024 Agriculture Census presented by the Statistics Department.
He said the data was shared during the National Agriculture Exco meeting, which was chaired by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu in Putrajaya recently.
'The meeting served as an important platform to align key policies and proposals to advance the agricultural and agri-food sector across the country,' he said in a statement yesterday.
The Buloh Kasap assemblyman said Johor's strong performance reaffirmed its position as a national agriculture powerhouse and a critical contributor to food production and food security in Malaysia.
Zahari also said the state government would remain committed to ensuring that the agriculture sector continues to grow.
He added that Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has repeatedly stressed the need for continuous efforts to boost the sector as a key part of the state's development plan.
'As part of the Johor Budget 2026, we will focus on empowering the target groups involved, such as farmers, livestock breeders, fishermen and agri-entrepreneurs,' he said.
Zahari also said that during the meeting, he had raised the importance of food security within the broader framework of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) development.
Zahari said food security was a key focus area under the JS-SEZ initiative, adding that efforts would include promoting high-tech agricultural practices.
'Our goal is to scale up the production of quality and competitive agri-food products by embracing innovation and sustainable methods,' he said.
In recognition of Johor's role, Zahari said the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has approved a special allocation of RM23.4mil for the state.
'The funds will be used to implement 20 programmes and agricultural projects throughout 2025, with the aim of accelerating development and improving farmers' livelihoods.
'The state government is grateful for the support and will ensure the effective and smooth implementation of all initiatives under this collaboration,' he said.
Zahari also said that he had called for improvements in disaster assistance management, especially for farmers, breeders and fishermen affected by floods and other natural disasters during the meeting.
He said that faster aid delivery would enable them to resume affected projects quickly and safeguard their income sources and output capacity.
'The state government will continue giving its full commitment to elevating the agriculture sector in line with the Maju Johor agenda,' he added.

Farmers' incentives to be paid out by July 31

PUTRAJAYA: The government will ensure that all payments for the ploughing and harvesting incentives to farmers are completed by July 31, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu (pic). He said the total amount of the incentive was RM210, comprising RM160 for ploughing and RM50 for harvesting. He added that the matter had been discussed at the Cabinet Committee on National Food Security Policy (FSCC) Meeting 1/2025, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 16. 'The meeting focused on strategic initiatives to strengthen the country's food security and boost the growth of the agriculture and agro-food sectors. 'Various other initiatives were also discussed, including strategies to increase the country's self-sufficiency rate (SSR) for beef and buffalo meat to ensure sustainability of the nation's food supply,' he said in a statement, Bernama reported. On June 11, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry (KPKM) announced an increase in the ploughing incentive rate and introduced a harvesting incentive, providing total cash assistance of RM210 per hectare to padi farmers each season, benefiting around 130,000 farmers across the peninsula. Mohamad also said the government welcomed the development of the Malaysian Food Composition Database as a strategic component of the National Food Security Policy. He said the meeting had also agreed in principle to explore effective strategies to reduce dependence on grain corn imports to ensure the industry's sustainability and growth. 'In addition, the proposed amendment to the Protection of New Plant Varieties Act 2004 (Act 634) will be implemented to provide more comprehensive protection for new plant varieties.' Mohamad said policy planning would continue to be strengthened based on the findings of the 2024 Agricultural Census Interim Report for the agricultural sector's growth. He said that as part of efforts to modernise the agricultural sector, the strategic cooperation between KPKM and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia will be enhanced with the introduction of the Remote Pilot Certificate of Competency – Agriculture Light syllabus for private unmanned aircraft systems.

Durian frenzy: Over 3 tonnes sold in 12 hours at Domestic Trade southern zone carnival

ISKANDAR PUTERI: More than three tonnes of durian, equivalent to about 2,000 fruits were sold out in 12 hours on the first day of the Rahmah Madani Sale in conjunction with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry 2025 Southern Zone Carnival held at Puteri Harbour yesterday. Durian trader Mohd Hairul Mohd Aziz, 43, from Batu Pahat, said the affordable promotional prices ranging from RM25 to RM35 per kg for the premium Musang King variety, compared to the market price of RM40 to RM60 was the main reason for the overwhelming response from visitors. "From 10am to 10pm yesterday alone, we managed to sell almost three tonnes of durian. "Today, we're targeting to sell another four tonnes, insya-Allah," he told Bernama when met at his sales tent at the carnival today. Commenting on the Eat Local Fruits campaign launched yesterday by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, he described the initiative as a timely move to bring Malaysia's agricultural produce into the spotlight. "Malaysian durians are among the best in the world. "If events like this are organised more often, locals can enjoy premium durians that are usually exported," he said. Mohd Hairul also expressed his support for the expansion of the Rahmah Madani Sale and campaigns to promote local fruits, especially now that some imported fruits are subject to Sales and Services Tax (SST). "This is the best time for us to aggressively promote local fruits. "The quality is excellent and should be the rakyat's first choice," he said. Visitors also welcomed the campaign which offers affordable prices while boosting demand for local agricultural produce. Siti Rubiah Manshor, 51, said local fruits should be the people's top pick, especially in the current economic climate. "It's a shame if local fruits aren't our first choice, while foreigners are scrambling to buy them. "This campaign to eat local fruits is great, but it needs to be implemented consistently," she said. Yesterday, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali launched the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) 2025, themed 'Jom Beli Lokal' (Let's Buy Local), aimed at expanding the reach of local products and reducing dependence on imported goods. – Bernama

Losses Incurred By Pineapple Farmers Dropped To RM1.02 Mln Last Year

JOHOR BAHRU, June 28 (Bernama) -- Losses incurred by pineapple farmers nationwide due to unpredictable weather and natural disasters dropped significantly from RM7 million in 2021 to RM1.02 million last year. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the decline was partly attributed to research outcomes, infrastructure development and innovations by the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM). 'For example, in 2021, the recorded losses amounted to RM7 million, which then dropped to RM2 million in 2022, RM1.8 million in 2023 and RM1.02 million last year,' he told a press conference after launching the 2025 International Pineapple Industry Seminar here today.
