Zelenskiy says deputy PM Stefanishyna to become new envoy to US

Yahoo17-07-2025
KYIV (Reuters) -Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday Olha Stefanishyna, a deputy prime minister responsible for Euro-Atlantic integration, would become the country's new ambassador to the United States.
Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram that he had appointed her as the special presidential representative to the U.S. so that she could develop relations with Washington while the procedures necessary for her appointment took place.
Ukraine is seeking to mend frayed ties with the U.S. after Zelenskiy and U.S. President Donald Trump clashed publicly at the White House in February.
Stefanishyna has served as Ukraine's minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration since 2020, during which time Ukraine began its accession process to the EU.
Ukraine's current ambassador to the U.S., Oksana Markarova, incurred the wrath of Trump's incoming administration during the 2024 election battle with his predecessor Joe Biden.
Markarova was accused by Republicans of helping Biden's Democratic Party by organising Zelenskiy's visit to a Pennsylvania ammunition factory in autumn 2024, which was attended by Democratic politicians but not by Republicans.
The incident was brought up by Vice President J.D. Vance during his spat with Zelenskiy in the disastrous Oval Office meeting, at which Markarova was present.

Trump says he's going to reduce Putin's 50 day deadline to end Ukraine war

WASHINGTON — President Trump said Monday he's looking to reduce the 50-day deadline he gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine. 'I'm disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed at him,' the president said ahead of his meeting with UK President Keir Starmer in Scotland. 'So we're going to have to look, and I'm going to reduce that 50 days — that I gave him — to a lesser number, because I think I already know the answer what's going to happen.' 3 Donald Trump speaks during a meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at Trump Turnberry golf club on July 27, 2025 in Turnberry, Scotland. AFP via Getty Images Trump had threatened Putin on July 14 to negotiate a cease-fire with Ukraine in 50 days — or face brutal secondary sanctions that could ravage Russia's economy even more. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been open to meeting Putin to negotiate the end of the three-year war, but the Kremlin has been tepid about sending the Russian president to meet for direct talks, choosing to engage with lower staff first. The three Ukraine-Russia delegation meetings held in Turkey in the past few months have not successfully established a cease-fire, but have led to prisoner swaps. 3 Russian President Vladimir Putin, left, speaks with Vladimir Vladimirov, the governor of Stavropol Territory, during their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Monday, July 28, 2025. He's said that Putin tells him he wants to end the war, only to go on directing missiles strikes on Ukraine. 'We thought we had that settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever. You have bodies lying all over the street,' Trump went on in Scotland. 'And I say that's not the way to do it. So we'll see what happens with that.

Trump Says He'll Reduce 50-Day Deadline He Gave Putin For Truce

US President Donald Trump said he would reduce the 50-day deadline he gave Russian leader Vladimir Putin to reach a truce with Ukraine, saying he was disappointed in his counterpart over the continuation of the war.
