Perak authorities probe Sungai Bidor pollution, pig and duck farms inspected

IPOH, April 25 — The Perak Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) and the Department of Environment (DOE) have launched a probe into the alleged Sungai Bidor water pollution.
State Human Resources, Health, Indian Community Affairs, and Integration Committee Chairman A Sivanesan said that the agencies conducted an on-site check yesterday and collected water samples from strategic locations for laboratory analysis.
'Samples were collected from a pig farm and a duck farm at Batu 2 1/2, Jalan Bruseh, near Bidor. Inspections revealed that the pig farm is in compliance with the required regulations. However, effluent samples were taken from both the discharge end of the farm and the discharge pipe in the river area, and these samples have been sent for testing of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).
'A probe into the duck farm revealed that it does not use ponds for rearing ducks. Therefore, no pond wastewater is being discharged into the river,' he said in a press conference alongside state Science, Environment, and Green Technology Committee Chairman Teh Kok Lim at Perak Darul Ridzuan Building yesterday.
PAS Vice President Datuk Idris Ahmad on Wednesday urged the state government to investigate a pig farm in Kampung Poh, which he claims contributes to pollution in Sungai Bidor.
Sivanesan said the analysis results are expected next week, as specified under the Pig Farming Control Enactment 1992.
'Based on sampling records conducted in 2024 and this January, the BOD readings for the farm in question complied with the minimum permitted level. Wastewater discharge should not exceed 50 parts per million. — Bernama

Also recording unhealthy air quality were Johan Setia, Selangor (153) and Putrajaya with API reading of 152. Meanwhile, Alor Gajah, Melaka with an API reading of 120. Meanwhile, a total of 57 stations showed moderate API readings, including Kuala Lumpur (95), Bukit Rambai, Melaka (95), and Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan (94). Six stations, namely Sarikei, Sibu, Samarahan and Sri Aman in Sarawak; and Tawau and Kimanis in Sabah, recorded good API readings between 40 and 50. An API reading of zero to 50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 moderate, 101-200 unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and an API above 300 is hazardous. The API data is released hourly, based on 68 air quality monitoring stations nationwide.

PETALING JAYA: Air quality in several parts of Peninsular Malaysia remains concerning, with the Department of Environment (DOE) website reporting unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in multiple locations as of 11 am on Sunday (July 20). Nilai in Negri Sembilan recorded the highest API at 160, placing it firmly in the "unhealthy" category. This was followed by Banting in Selangor, with an API of 153, also categorised as unhealthy. Putrajaya recorded an API of 111, while Temerloh in Pahang posted a reading of 104. Both areas fall within the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" category, indicating that individuals with respiratory issues, the elderly, and young children may face adverse effects. In the Klang Valley and surrounding areas, air quality remained moderate. Kuala Lumpur recorded an API of 96, followed by Alor Gajah in Melaka at 94. Port Dickson and Seremban, both in Negri Sembilan, recorded readings of 92 and 91, respectively. Bukit Rambai and Bandaraya Melaka followed closely with API readings of 89 and 88. Over in East Malaysia, air quality remained moderate as well. In Sabah, Kota Kinabalu recorded an API of 59, while Keningau posted 58. In Sarawak, Miri recorded a reading of 62, Bintulu 61, and Kuching 55. According to the DOE, an API reading of 0–50 is considered "good", 51–100 is "moderate", 101–200 is "unhealthy", 201–300 is "very unhealthy", and anything above 300 is categorised as "hazardous".

Six stations, namely IPD Serian, Sibu, Samarahan and Sri Aman in Sarawak, as well as Tawau and Kimanis in Sabah, recorded good API readings between 37 and 49. An API reading of zero to 50 indicates good air quality, 51-100 moderate, 101-200 unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and an API above 300 is hazardous.
