Can Unisys Capitalize Early With Looming Quantum Threats?

Yahoo3 days ago
As the specter of quantum computing edges closer to reality, cybersecurity has entered a new era—one where legacy encryption may soon be obsolete. Unisys Corporation UIS is betting on that future. In its first-quarter 2025 earnings call, the company introduced its first Post-Quantum Cryptography solution—a cryptographic posture assessment designed to help organizations identify vulnerabilities in their encryption frameworks ahead of the quantum curve. This strategic move aligns with Unisys' broader 'Clear Path Forward 2050' roadmap, which aims to modernize client infrastructure with future-proof solutions. The company's pivot toward quantum-resilient security, coupled with its growing presence in AI-enabled services, endpoint management, and data protection, could provide a differentiated edge as enterprises reassess their cybersecurity strategies. While revenue declined 11.4% year over year in the first quarter, Unisys grew new business total contract value (TCV) by 80%, highlighting strong forward momentum. Management reiterated full-year guidance and sees back-half tailwinds, especially in high-margin License & Support and infrastructure field services. Its balance sheet also remains robust, with $393 million in cash and improving free cash flow. The quantum race is still in early innings, but Unisys' proactive investments suggest it's trying to be more than a follower. Whether this niche play delivers meaningful upside depends on client adoption rates, the speed of quantum innovation, and execution across its diversified portfolio. With mounting cyber risk and rising demand for AI-ready infrastructure, Unisys may be positioning itself early—investors just have to decide if they believe it's early enough.
Rivals in the Quantum Race: How DXC Technology and Leidos Compare
As Unisys moves early on quantum-resilient cybersecurity, two key competitors—DXC Technology DXC and Leidos Holdings LDOS—are also accelerating their investments in post-quantum security and AI-driven defense solutions. DXC Technology has emphasized modernizing IT infrastructure and securing hybrid environments for large enterprises, with quantum-readiness emerging as a focal point in its recent federal and financial services contracts. DXC's positioning in digital transformation makes it a natural rival to Unisys in government and enterprise sectors, where data protection is paramount.Meanwhile, Leidos continues to expand its cybersecurity capabilities through government defense contracts, many of which now include quantum threat mitigation as a requirement. Leidos' focus on advanced threat intelligence and secure data transport challenges Unisys' ambitions, especially in public-sector security deployments. Both DXC Technology and Leidos boast stronger scale and federal exposure than Unisys, but UIS's focused innovation in quantum security could help it carve a niche if it executes ahead of DXC and Leidos.

Walmart launches plan to steal customers away from Target, Amazon

If you're looking for a deal, you probably think to wait until the holidays, when most retailers launch big Black Friday sales. This is a sound idea; the holiday shopping season remains the most lucrative time of the year for most retailers. Related: Walmart cracks down on a growing type of fraud But the back-to-school shopping season is kind of like Black Friday's little sister. "The back-to-school shopping period from July to mid-September is the second-biggest sales driver of the year after the holiday season," the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports. Every year, usually in the weeks that lead up to late August or early September, most big-box retail stores hold their own versions of back-to-school sales. It may seem gimmicky to celebrate a pretty routine part of the year to get shoppers through the door, but it works. "Americans are expected to spend $38.8 billion on clothes and supplies for children in grades K-12, and $86.6 billion on college students," the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said, per a 2024 National Retail Federation report. But tariffs, rising prices, and inflation complicate this picture. Many families have indicated they'll either slow their spending or specifically shop at discount retailers in search of deals. Some retailers, like Walmart (WMT) , are poised to win in such an environment. Image Source: Jones/Bloomberg via Getty Images The late summertime is typically a busy shopping period for Walmart. Customers are shopping for vacation, outdoor activities, picnics, and barbecues. And the most prepared ones begin to trickle in around mid-July for back-to-school shopping. More Retail: Walmart makes drastic change to fight theft amid worrying trendTarget has new plan to win back customers with big savingsHome Depot makes clear statement amid boycott threatsFamous retail chain makes two more alarming store closures So Walmart has decided to roll back the cost of some crucial items for families. The Arkansas-based retailer has cut the price of its top 14 most popular items to prices lower than they were one year prior. Some items are as low as $0.25, and its popular private brand Wonder Nation backpack is less than $5 at just $4.98. All told, Walmart says a student can get outfitted for the new year for just $65. But tariffs, which are duties on imported goods, have complicated the typically profitable back-to-school shopping period. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon explained the complication during the Q1 2026 earnings call. "We started to see increases happen in April and through May. We've been really focused on back-to-school receipts," McMillon explained. "When you have an imported item, you pay the tariff at the time it comes through customs. And so the cost is higher, even if the tariff rate comes down later, the cost has been elevated. McMillon added that tariffs could touch certain items, including back-to-school supplies, with an outsized effect. "So I wouldn't think of this as a moment in time necessarily, except when you think about seasonal things like back-to-school." Other top retailers, including Target (TGT) and Amazon (AMZN) , are also hosting early back-to-school promotions. Amazon's Prime Day served as its early back-to-school launch. It featured deals on books, notebooks, and pens for as low as $3. And Target announced it would put over 20 items on sale for back-to-school. The Minnesota-based retailer said it was freezing the prices of these items at 2024 prices. It claims students can bundle most of their school essentials for just around $20. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania--(Newsfile Corp. - July 27, 2025) - Berger Montague PC is investigating potential securities fraud claims on behalf of investors of Fiserv, Inc. (NYSE: FI) ('Fiserv' or the 'Company') following the filing of a securities class action lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Fiserv and certain executives overstated the Company's growth by failing to disclose, among other things, that its new payment platform, Clover, was experiencing a boost in revenue growth and gross payment volumes because the Company was forcing merchants to transition from its legacy Payeezy platform. Investors learned the Company's true financial picture following a series of disclosures which culminated on July 23, 2025, when Fiserv lowered its 2025 organic growth projections and confirmed that decelerated growth in its Merchant segment. On these announcements, Fiserv's share price declined dramatically.
