Man dies after being run over by his wife in car park
In a heart-wrenching incident, a man lost his life after being struck by his wife's car in what has been treated as a "tragic accident".
David Charles Seymour Chivers, aged 72, along with his wife Elaine Valentine, had made their way to Priorswell Road car park in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, on September 12, 2024. The couple was there to arrange details for an event at Bracebridge Recreation Ground that they were organising for the subsequent week.
However, upon their arrival at the car park, Mr Chivers stepped out of the vehicle to try and remove a height barrier at the rear of the car park, which led to the recreation ground, as was disclosed at an inquest into his death held at Nottingham Coroner's Court.
Initially, both Mr Chivers and Ms Valentine, who was present at the inquest, stood beside the barrier, but then Ms Valentine moved to the driver's seat, according to Nottinghamshire Live.
While Ms Valentine took her position in the car, Mr Chivers continued his attempts to unlock the padlock, which was positioned too high for easy access, coroner Sarah Wood noted.
Mr Chivers was next to the driver's side of the car, with the door open, when the automatic Vauxhall Insignia unexpectedly reversed, causing him to fall and subsequently be "suddenly run over".
The post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Chivers succumbed to a head injury, suffering severe brain trauma that was deemed "incompatible with life".
Coroner Wood recorded the death as accidental, stating: "Mr Chivers died of a head injury he sustained when the vehicle reversed, causing him to fall to the ground and suddenly ran over him.
"He placed himself in a vulnerable position and when Ms Valentine pressed the accelerator, the vehicle reacted abruptly and caused a sudden increase in speed. This left him with little time to react and knocked him to the ground.

"What happened next was a tragic event and I find it is more likely than not that Ms Valentine panicked in an attempt to move the car away from Mr Chivers. Due to the vehicle being in reverse, this led to the vehicle moving towards him and suddenly running over him, causing the head injury, which was his cause of death.
"This was a tragic accident which I'm sure Ms Valentine is very unlikely to recover from."
After the incident, emergency services were summoned by a bystander, but tragically, Mr Chivers was declared deceased at the scene.
PC Philip Broughton from Nottinghamshire Police commented that the emergency call came just after 10.50am and suggested that Ms Valentine may have experienced "sudden acceleration syndrome".
This phenomenon occurs when a motorist mistakenly hits the accelerator instead of the brake, leading to a state of panic and disarray.

Mercedes ‘ploughs into crowd' as two arrested after fight breaks out in pub car park
Two men have been arrested and a car park gate left in ruins after the shocking incident unfolded just before 11.20pm on Friday, August 1. A violent bust-up took place outside a pub before a Mercedes 'ploughed into a crowd'. Two men have been arrested and a car park gate left in ruins after the shocking incident unfolded just before 11.20pm on Friday, August 1. Police were called to the Oxton Bar and Kitchenon on Claughton Firs, Oxton, following reports of an 'ongoing disturbance'. Officers say two men had attempted to flee the pub's car park in a Mercedes, but not before the vehicle caused 'significant damage' to the exit gate. As reported by the Mirror, one of the men is then said to have got into a fight with another group, escalating the situation further. The car - with one of the suspects inside - was then reportedly driven away and is believed to have crashed into multiple members of the public. Officers say no injuries have been reported so far. The second man is thought to have fled the scene on foot and police have arrested two men, aged 21 and 26, both from Wirral and the car has also been recovered The 21-year-old is being held on suspicion of s18 grievous bodily harm with intent, five counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving, driving while unfit through drink, failing to stop after a road accident and affray. The 26-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of six counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, driving while unfit through drink, failing to stop after a road accident, criminal damage and affray. Detective Inspector Sarah Wilkinson said: 'We know the Oxton Bar and Kitchen would have been busy last night and believe a number of people would have witnessed or been involved in this incident. At this stage no-one has come forward to police to report they were injured. " Enquiries are also being carried out with hospitals in the local area but as yet we have not identified anyone who may have been involved. I would ask anyone who was at the bar last night and was either directly involved or witnessed the incident to come forward and speak to us.' Dangerous driver snared after eagle-eyed cops spot girlfriend's iPad screensaver
Brendon Walters, who evaded cops in a high-speed chase, was eventually caught by Nottinghamshire Police after they spotted his face on the screensaver of his girlfriend's iPad A dangerous driver was identified after police found a picture of him on his girlfriend's iPad. Brendon Walters had managed to shake off pursuing police in a high-speed chase through Bullwell, a suburb of Nottingham. A police check found a black Audi car belonging to Walters' girlfriend but noted that a male was driving it. After the car slipped away from the police, cops went to the woman's property in the Nottinghamshire town of Hucknall. An officer noticed the Audi was still warm, despite Walters' girlfriend saying it had not been driven. An iPad inside the car had a photo of Walters as the background image. It comes after a woman was found dead on a bus with 26 iPhones glued to her body. Police went back to the address to look for him on January 13 last year, but he refused to come out. One officer went into the property through the front door and found Walters on the stairs. He barged the officer aside and fled. Walters, who only had a provisional licence, has 20 previous convictions for 32 offences to his name. This includes taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, drugs, common assault and robbery according to Nottinghamshire Live. Walters, 31, now of High Close, Kirkby, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and escaping from lawful custody. Handing him a 12-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, Judge Julie Warburton said: 'You were driving your girlfriend's car and you knew you should not have been driving as you were disqualified and only have a provisional licence. 'When the police tried to stop you, you sped off at speed, ran a red light and went on the wrong side of the road. They went to your girlfriend's address and from an iPad which was left in the car you were identified.' Anthony Cheung, prosecuting, said police spotted the Audi on April 11, 2023. He said a check revealed it was registered to the defendant's partner but he was driving and so they indicated for it to pull over in Camberley Road, Snape Wood, by activating their blue lights. The prosecutor said: 'He drove off at speed and during the pursuit went on the wrong side of the road, ran a red light and went over the middle of a roundabout. The car then disappeared from view and so they went to her address and spoke to her. The bonnet was still hot and she said no-one had been driving it. 'But her iPad was inside the car and the defendant's face was on it.' Mr Cheung said in January 2024, the police again went to the same address looking for him and he was upstairs and looked out of a window and refused to come down. He said: 'The officer tried the door which was open and attempted to arrest the defendant who pulled away and was shouting at the officer. He pushed the officer off, managed to push past him and ran out of the property.' Dominic Shelley, mitigating, said his client was now working full time and has a family which is dependent on him. As part of the suspended sentence order, the judge handed the defendant 35 rehabilitation sessions and 100 hours unpaid work. She also disqualified him from driving for 12 months.
