Indian Navy's Next Generation Stealth Frigate INS Nilgiri Docks In Chennai
The Indian Navy's newest indigenously built stealth frigate INS Nilgiri, docked in Chennai on Thursday on her maiden visit, marking a momentous occasion as she touched the shore of the State which inspired her name.
The Navy's first of the seven next-generation stealth frigates, INS Nilgiri is now on a maiden homecoming to Chennai. Equipped with cutting-edge weapons and sensors, it multiplies India's operational might, according to a statement by the Defence Ministry public relations official.
The ship's name is inspired by the majestic Nilgiri Hills, also known as the Blue Mountains of Tamil Nadu, which embody the spirit of strength, courage, resilience, and a rich heritage.
Commissioned on January 15, 2025, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, INS Nilgiri is the lead vessel of the Project 17A (P 17A) class of stealth guided-missile frigates.
INS Nilgiri stands as a testament to India's growing prowess in shipbuilding and maritime capabilities, having been built indigenously under Project 17A.
"The maiden visit of INS Nilgiri to Chennai symbolises a proud homecoming, bridging the connection between the mountains and the seas. This visit highlights the ship's heritage and its role in safeguarding the nation's maritime interests," according to the press statement.
It is a shining example of the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence manufacturing and a proud representation of India's indigenous shipbuilding capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The ship is commanded by Captain Nitin Kapoor, the Commissioning Commanding Officer and the crew contains over 27 officers and 250 sailors. It was designed by the Warship Design Bureau and built indigenously at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata.
Measuring 149 metres in length with a displacement of around 6,670 tonnes, the vessel, locally designed by the Directorate of Naval Design, has reduced radar cross-section and infrared signatures.
The frigate has a capacity to accommodate 226 personnel. Its armaments include Barak-8 surface-to-air missiles, eight BrahMos anti-ship supersonic cruise missiles, along with close-in weapon systems and torpedo launchers. Propulsion is provided by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system, enabling speeds of up to 32 knots and offering a range exceeding 5,500 nautical miles at economical cruising speed.

All About The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple The Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple is located in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, in the town of the same name. The temple was built by the Chola emperor Rajendra I and completed in 1035 CE to commemorate his victorious northern expedition. It is an example of Dravidian architecture, featuring intricate carvings and sculptures from the Chola period. The principal deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped in the form of a 13-foot-tall Shiva Lingam. The temple tower, or vimana, rises to a height of 55 metres, making it one of the tallest in India. The temple stands on an elevated plinth and features a courtyard that measures 170 metres in length and 98 metres in width. The main structure of the temple is 341 feet long and 100 feet wide. The temple is part of the "Great Living Chola Temples", a group of UNESCO World Heritage Sites that also includes the Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur and the Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram. The name "Gangaikonda Cholapuram" means "the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga", referring to Rajendra I's military expedition to northern India, during which pots of Ganga water were brought back to the south. Rajendra I shifted the Chola capital from Thanjavur to Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which remained the imperial capital for over 250 years. The city was fortified with both inner and outer defensive walls, as revealed by archaeological excavations. The outer fortification was made of burnt bricks, measuring six to eight feet in width and filled with sand between two layers of brick walls. While the capital once housed many temples, most were destroyed in later centuries, and only the main Shiva temple survives today. The temple was re-consecrated in 2017, with the installation of a new dwajasthambam (flagstaff) and the performance of maha kumbhabhishekam rituals.

PM Modi expresses grief over loss of lives in Mansa Devi stampede
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the Mansa Devi stampede in Uttarakhand's Haridwar that claimed six lives. PM Modi extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished for a speedy recovery of the injured. He said that the local administration is assisting those affected, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a post on the social media platform X. "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a stampede on the route to Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected: PM @narendramodi," the post read. Expressing grief over the incident, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami earlier in the day said that extremely distressing news was received about the stampede. He said rescue and relief operations were underway, and he was closely monitoring the situation. "Extremely distressing news has been received about a stampede breaking out at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar. Uttarakhand SDRF, local police, and other rescue teams have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations, CM Dhami said in his post on X. "The death of six people in the heart-wrenching stampede at the Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar is deeply saddening. I pray to God that the souls of the departed find a place at His divine feet and that the grieving families are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow," the CM further said. CM Dhami announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Authorities confirmed that relief work is still underway, and the situation is being closely monitored. Further details regarding the Haridwar incident are still awaited as authorities continue to assess the situation. Every year, Haridwar sees a massive influx of pilgrims during the month of Shravan, especially at the revered Har Ki Pauri and Mansa Devi Temple.

Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi commends growth in space sector, ‘Over 200 startups have come up'
Praising astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's return from space, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that a new wave of interest in space is rising among children across India. He noted that over 200 startups have already emerged in the country's space sector. 1. During his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address, Modi said that the path to a developed India (Viksit Bharat) lies in self-reliance, adding that the 'Vocal for Local' initiative forms the strongest foundation of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. 2. "Recently, there was a lot of discussion in the country about the return of Shubhanshu Shukla from space. As soon as Shubhanshu landed safely on Earth, people jumped with joy, and a wave of happiness ran through every heart. The whole country was filled with pride," he said, adding, 'there were fewer than 50 startups five years ago. Today, there are more than 200 startups in the space sector alone.' 3. Stressing the 'Swadesh Movement', PM stated that a new revolution began on August 7, 1905. 'The Swadeshi Movement infused new energy into local products, particularly handlooms. In this memory, the country celebrates National Handloom Day on 7th August every textile sector is becoming a strength of the country. Kavita Dhawale from Maharashtra's Paithan village used to work in a small room with no space and facilities. He noted, 'Similarly, organic waste management is being done with the help of technology in Mangaluru. There is a small city called Roing in Arunachal. There was a time when waste management was a big challenge confronting the health of the people there. The people there took responsibility for it. 'Green Roing Initiative' was started and then an entire park was created from recycled waste. Similarly, many new examples of water management have been set in Karad and Vijayawada. The cleanliness at the River Front in Ahmedabad has also caught everyone's attention.' 8. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the 'Khelo Bharat Niti 2025' has received widespread appreciation, and added that its clear objective is to transform India into a global sporting superpower.
