Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final was a night to forget for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman and one that could define Brad Marchand's legacy with the Florida Panthers.

Marchand scored twice, with both goals coming at Walman's expense, in a 5-2 win in Edmonton to put the Panthers one victory away from back-to-back titles.
The second came on a brilliant solo effort capped with a five-hole finish, leaving Walman visibly frustrated, as he admitted in comments made to The Athletic after the game.
'That's a good player,' Walman said of Marchand. '(Expletive) feeling as a defenseman. I want to have that one back. I've just got to play everybody hard. It doesn't matter who they are.'
Marchand's addition at the trade deadline already looked like a coup for Florida. After Saturday's game, it may go down as one of the most impactful midseason moves in years.

The veteran has six goals in this series, the most in a Cup Final since Edmonton's Esa Tikkanen's six in 1988. Marchand's 13 career Cup Final goals are the most among active NHL players.

The Panthers acquired Marchand from Boston on March 7. In this year's playoffs, he has tallied 20 points in 22 games, including 10 goals.
Oilers superstar Connor McDavid, in contrast, found the net for the first time in the finals in Game 5, although that helped him make history once again.
McDavid's goal was his 150th career playoff point, a mark he reached in just 95 games, thus becoming the third-fastest player in NHL history to hit that figure.

Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final is set for 8 p.m. ET Tuesday in Sunrise, Florida.

Maple Leafs, Golden Knights discussing trade for Mitch Marner's rights: Sources

The Vegas Golden Knights are discussing a trade to acquire the rights of pending unrestricted free agent Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to league sources, which would allow them to sign the All-Star winger before he hits the open market on Tuesday. If they acquire Marner, the Golden Knights would gain the ability to sign Marner to a maximum-length eight-year contract. If they wait until Tuesday, when free agency opens, the longest term they could give him will be seven years. Advertisement TSN's Darren Dreger was the first to report the potential move. Marner is one of Toronto's most accomplished players, sitting fifth on the all-time scoring list with 741 points at age 28. He was drafted No. 4 by his hometown team in 2015 and became an immediate fan favorite because of his creativity and elite playmaking ability. However, Marner also drew sharp criticism for the team's inability to get over the hump in the playoffs and started to chafe under that scrutiny. It became clear he could be eyeing a departure in free agency when he refused to engage in discussions on a contract extension with the Leafs throughout last season. He also refused to waive his no-movement clause at the March 7 trade deadline for a deal that would have sent him to the Carolina Hurricanes. Earlier this week, Leafs general manager Brad Treliving acknowledged to reporters that Marner was going to test the free-agent market. A trade to Vegas would be similar to the one the Hurricanes made at last year's draft, when they sent Jake Guentzel's rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a third-round pick after failing to get him to sign a contract. That allowed Guentzel to ink an eight-year deal with the Lightning, carrying a $9 million AAV.

Justin Bieber Shares Photos of Son Jack Sporting a Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey on a Family Vacation — and the Team Reacts

Justin Bieber's son Jack Blues wore a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey in several recent Instagram posts from the singer The Canadian musician is a longtime fan of the NHL team, who commented on one of the posts The photos of Jack, 10 months, come amid Justin's lakeside family vacation with his son and wife, Hailey BieberJustin Bieber's mini-me may not be able to walk yet, but he's already following in his dad's hockey-loving footsteps! After debuting a new Instagram username, the 'Love Yourself' singer, 31, shared a dozen posts on Friday, June 27, including several from his lakeside family vacation with wife Hailey Bieber and son Jack Blues. In some of the snaps, the musician revealed that the couple's 10-month-old already has a sporty side. In several different posts, the Canadian musician, who now goes by @lilbieber on Instagram, showed off Jack wearing a jersey for the Toronto Maple Leafs — his longtime team — from a series of different angles. Specifically, the little one repped Auston Matthews — a center and captain for the NHL team — with the baby-size jersey, which he paired with some baggy jeans and matching blue socks. Matthews acknowledged the support, commenting '💙,' on one of the singer's posts. The Maple Leafs also recognized the shout-out, writing, '💙💙💙,' in the comments of another carousel of photos of Jack. Another snap of the 10-month-old revealed that hockey is not the only sport the proud parents have introduced to Jack. In the photo, the little one sits next to a soccer ball in a field, wearing a blue and gray hoodie and looking away from the camera. Justin adorned the picture with a fairy emoji and captioned it, '🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️🧍‍♂️.' This is almost identical to Justin's captions for the other posts, and appears to be a nod to his viral moment telling paparazzi that he is "standing on business." He used the person standing emojis alongside every recent post he shared of Jack, which also included snaps of him smiling down at his son, who sat in a delivery box. Justin also shared a solo shot of Hailey, 28, and a photo of their son next to what appeared to be the Rhode founder's hands. In line with Hailey and Justin's ongoing decision to keep Jack's face off of social media, the father of one cropped all of the pictures of the jersey-wearing baby — or shared a snap of the back of his head — so his face was not visible. Justin and Hailey got married in September 2018. Six years later, in May 2024, they renewed their wedding vows in Hawaii and revealed that they were expecting their first child together. Could Commanders' Jayden Daniels Suffer 'C.J. Stroud Effect' In Year 2?

Could Commanders' Jayden Daniels Suffer 'C.J. Stroud Effect' In Year 2? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There isn't too much the Washington Commanders have to "worry" about when it comes to Jayden Daniels in Year 2, but one thing is the dreaded sophomore slump. Advertisement Players who often have a stellar rookie season sometimes struggle to replicate it due to a variety of reasons, including teams figuring out their tendencies, roster changes, or a combination of both. But there doesn't seem to be much concern about that happening with Jayden. Although the Houston Texans thought that about C.J. Stroud, who did regress a little in Year 2. For Fox Sports' Henry McKenna, in a "What Could Go Right, Wrong for Every NFC QB" scenario for 2025, Daniels goes full Stroud. "After seeing what happened to Stroud in Year 2, there's a growing sense of anxiety for sophomore quarterbacks," McKenna writes. "So could Daniels be the latest QB to fall prey to that sophomore slump? Well, yeah, absolutely. Remember that star receiver Terry McLaurin is locked in a contract battle with Washington. We've seen negotiations influence training camp reps — and, in turn, negatively impact QB-WR rapport. It's hard to sustain success in the NFL. Daniels' second year might be yet another example of that." Advertisement Stroud actually won one more game in Year 2, still made the playoffs, and won a playoff game. Yes, his stats were down across the board, and his general play wasn't consistent, but we aren't sure if it was a "slump" of sorts. For Daniels, replicating his efforts from last year is going to be tough, after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year and making it to the NFC Championship game, so we have to be careful about expecting too much from a second-year quarterback. As bad as it sounds, a 10-7 season and making the playoffs is a "regression" for Daniels, but it would still be a good season, providing his level of play doesn't dip too much. Will Daniels be able to hold off the C.J. Stroud effect in 2025? That'll be the hope.
