Oman targets 5,380 jobs for citizens in key sectors in 2025

Muscat – Oman's Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has reported notable progress in its 2025 drive to boost employment of nationals in the transport, logistics, and information technology sectors.
In the first quarter of the year, 1,450 Omanis secured jobs in the transport and logistics sector, while 236 found employment in the IT sector. The ministry is targeting a total of 4,950 jobs in transport and logistics and 430 in IT by the end of 2025.
A ministry official confirmed that the 21% Omanisation target in the transport and logistics sectors was achieved in the first quarter. The ministry is also aiming to reach 10% Omanisation in technical, specialised and leadership roles in both sectors, and an overall Omanisation rate of 63%, with 41% specifically in technical and leadership positions.
To meet these goals, the ministry has introduced several policies and regulations. These include mandatory Omanisation quotas for consulting firms contracted by the ministry and a 20% Omanisation requirement for supervisory roles in the last-mile delivery sector.
Efforts to build workforce readiness are also underway. Around 210 Omanis are currently participating in training programmes that include classroom instruction linked to employment. In collaboration with the Oman Logistics Association, 52 Omanis are undergoing training to become qualified heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
In the IT sector, the ministry is promoting both structured employment and freelance work. As part of its Freelance Work Initiative, a contract has been signed with Awasr to provide 58 freelance opportunities for Omanis. Additionally, 50 nationals received hands-on training and job placements in semiconductor-related investment projects through the ministry's On-the-Job Training Initiative in Q1.
The Makeen Initiative, aimed at equipping youth with digital skills to support entry into the digital economy, benefitted 990 Omanis during the same period.
The ministry stated these initiatives reflect its commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities for citizens.

From online to onstage: Attending an international Trade Fair in The Gambia for the first time

Participating in trade shows is crucial for the growth of small businesses. It provides them opportunities to sell, network and enhance their visibility. Yet, many entrepreneurs, especially in least developed countries, struggle to participate in trade fairs due to high costs. That was the case for Mariama S. Ceesay, founder of Her Sacred Veil, a bespoke fashion brand in The Gambia. 'I had never participated in a trade show before because I did not have the financial means to cover the cost of a stall,' says Mariama. 'As a small business owner, most of my resources focus on production and fulfilling customer orders.' This changed when the European Union Youth Empowerment Project – Tourism and Creative Industries, funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Trade Centre (ITC), stepped in. The project covered 90% of her stall fee, provided training and visibility products. 'I received training, help with my branding and an e-business card. Additionally, the project organized engaging activities around our stalls to attract more visitors and increase visibility for our businesses,' Mariama says said. Before the fair, Her Sacred Veil operated mostly online. 'I was mainly selling my products online through TikTok and WhatsApp. I used TikTok to showcase my products and reach a wider audience, while WhatsApp helped me manage orders and communicate directly with customers. Now at the trade fair, I was able to show the quality, creativity and craftsmanship that go into every outfit I design,' explains Mariama. The experience was a breakthrough. Mariama made several sales and gained a new customer base. 'I was happy about the orders I received during and after the trade fair. I also made some useful business contacts that will hopefully lead to future opportunities,' she says. Mariama's highlight was connecting directly with new customers and hearing their positive feedback about her bespoke outfits. 'It was exciting that people appreciated my designs and placed orders on the spot.' She did not hit her target in terms of sales, but for Mariama, the trade fair was much more than that. `Sales were lower than expected, but I learned a lot, especially about converting interest into purchases.' Now, the business owner is thinking bigger. She plans to attend more fairs and seek for support to acquire equipment and a showroom. 'I'm currently working with one sewing machine. I dream of getting an overlock machine and creating a space that truly reflects my brand.' Distributed by APO Group on behalf of International Trade Centre.

Saudi Arabia and UK explore collaboration on LEO satellite connectivity

Saudi tech delegation in UK explored high-speed connectivity and partnerships to advance communication in key sectors like transport, energy, industry and education. A high-level Saudi Arabian delegation, led by Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha, visited leading British technology companies and research centres during an official tour of the United Kingdom, focusing on advancing deep tech, digital innovation and satellite communications, according to a report by Saudi Press Agency. The delegation began its tour at Wayve, a company focused on AI-driven autonomous driving technologies, where they were introduced to AV2.0, the company’s latest generation of smart mobility solutions. They later visited Automata Technologies, a company specialising in laboratory automation through robotics. Here, they explored the LINQ platform, which integrates AI to accelerate diagnostics and biomedical research, highlighting new collaboration opportunities in digital health and life sciences. To support tech entrepreneurship and deep technology adoption, the Saudi representatives held talks with leaders from Catapult, a UK organisation focused on scaling innovative businesses. Discussions centred around potential partnerships to help foster startup ecosystems and facilitate the integration of cutting-edge technologies across sectors. The delegation also engaged with executives from OneWeb, a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite company, to explore joint initiatives for high-speed connectivity solutions. Oman's transport sector advances sustainable trade, connectivity goals

Muscat – Oman's transport and logistics sector is playing a central role in the country's economic transformation under Vision 2040, supported by large-scale investment, policy development and digital integration. A new Growth Perspectives video produced by global research and advisory firm Oxford Business Group (OBG), in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT), examines how infrastructure upgrades and sustainability initiatives are reinforcing Oman's role as a strategic trade and logistics hub. The video, titled Oman's transport sector seeks to drive sustainable trade, highlights the sector's contribution of 7% to GDP in 2023, with aims to surpass 10% by 2040. Backed by RO2.5bn in targeted investment from 2021 to 2025, Oman is enhancing efficiency, boosting non-oil exports and improving multimodal connectivity. Particular focus is placed on the role of the country's deepwater ports – Sohar, Duqm and Salalah – which are positioned to support industrial development, energy production and international trans-shipment. These ports, together with improved road and airport access, are enabling Oman to expand its logistics footprint regionally and globally. The video also outlines the country's efforts to advance green and digital logistics solutions in support of its target of net-zero emissions by 2050. New initiatives include incentives for electric vehicles, adoption of blockchain and e-seal technologies, and the development of green trade corridors. The Oman Logistics Centre, a directorate under MTCIT, is leading the National Logistics Strategy and overseeing the sector's digital transformation. Key projects include Customs streamlining, last-mile delivery improvements and measures to increase transparency and efficiency across the logistics value chain. H E Eng Said bin Hamoud al Ma'awali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said Oman's investment in infrastructure and innovation is enabling the country to strengthen its position as a regional gateway for trade. 'The transport and logistics sector is a vital enabler of Oman Vision 2040. Through integrated planning, policy development and advanced infrastructure, we are supporting economic growth while aligning with the country's broader sustainability objectives.' Dana Carmen Agarbicean, OBG's Country Director for Oman, said the sector's performance reflects Oman's ability to align long-term strategic goals with implementation. 'Oman's logistics sector is making significant strides in infrastructure development, trade facilitation and digitalisation. These efforts are establishing a foundation for sustainable growth and enhancing the country's competitiveness as a trade and investment destination.' © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
