Trump says 'very wealthy' group found to buy TikTok
President Donald Trump said Sunday a group of buyers had been found for TikTok, which faces a looming ban in the United States due to its China ties, adding he could name the purchasers in two weeks.
"We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way," Trump said in an interview on Fox's Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo.
"Very wealthy people. It's a group of wealthy people," the president said, without revealing more except to say he would make their identities known "in about two weeks."
The president also said he would likely need "China approval" for the sale, "and I think President Xi (Jinping) will probably do it."
TikTok is owned by China-based internet company ByteDance.
A federal law requiring TikTok's sale or ban on national security grounds was due to take effect the day before Trump's inauguration on January 20. But the Republican, whose 2024 election campaign relied heavily on social media and who has said he is fond of TikTok, put the ban on pause.
In mid-June Trump extended a deadline for the popular video-sharing app by another 90 days to find a non-Chinese buyer or be banned in the United States.
Tech experts quickly described the TikTok kerfuffle as a symbol of the heated US-China tech rivalry.
While Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, he reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform -- which boasts almost two billion global users -- after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election.
"I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok," Trump told NBC News in early May. "If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension."
Now after two extensions pushed the deadline to June 19, Trump has extended it for a third time.
He said in May that a group of purchasers was ready to pay ByteDance "a lot of money" for TikTok's US operations.
The previous month he said China would have agreed to a deal on the sale of TikTok if it were not for a dispute over Trump's tariffs on Beijing.
ByteDance has confirmed talks with the US government, saying key matters needed to be resolved and that any deal would be "subject to approval under Chinese law."

US lawmakers recently proposed a ban on government agencies using Chinese AI models such as DeepSeek. The 'No Adversarial AI Act' was introduced to the House of Representatives by two members of the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. It proposes the creation of a permanent framework for barring the use of all Chinese models from US executive agencies, in addition to those from Russia, Iran and North Korea. The framework would include a list, created by the Federal Acquisition Security Council, with the names of AI models created in the countries in question and be regularly updated. US government agencies would not be able to access the models or use the AI technologies without an exemption, such as for research. John Moolenaar, who chairs the Select Committee, stated 'the US must draw a hard line: hostile AI systems have no business operating inside our government'. He continued: 'This legislation creates a permanent firewall to keep adversary AI out of our most sensitive networks – where the cost of compromise is simply too high'. The move comes after a senior State Department official told Reuters DeepSeek was aiding China's military and intelligence operations, while having access to large volumes of Nvidia chips. AI: A game-changer for researchers and innovators
Scientific research, in all fields, is vitally important for finding answers to solutions and for living on this planet a better experience. While research is an intellectually rewarding experience, it can sometimes be a tedious and time-consuming process. AI has many applications that can provide assistance to researchers, in all fields, and at all stages of the research process, from identifying research gaps to preparing the slides for presentations. This article will discuss some of these research-oriented applications. One of these AI applications is Consensus, which helps in the literature review as it offers quick answers to research-related questions by reviewing existing relevant studies and articles and drafting research outlines. A similar tool is Elicit, which serves the same purpose, but is a more comprehensive and advanced application. Another research assistant is NotebookLM, which helps with immediate summarisation and note-taking. It also serves as a personalised assistant, allowing users to upload their own sources and ask questions to receive simple explanations. Johnson (2024) states, 'Within seconds, NotebookLM becomes a virtual research assistant, capable of answering questions or tracking down references based entirely on the source materials you've supplied.' The most well-known AI-powered tool is ChatGPT. It is a significant tool for researchers since it is used for many purposes, such as drafting and editing academic writings, scanning and summarising articles, and responding to different questions that researchers ask for. Another application is Gemini, which is great for multi-modal processing, real-time research, analysing articles and academic papers, and could be used for scripting too. The Visily application is also helpful in data analysis and helps users prototype digital tools and present visual ideas (AI tools); researchers may also use it for quick and creative designs. Another very useful tool is Research Rabbit, in which researchers can discover various research papers and find connections between different authors and their works. James Cook University maintains that Research Rabbit is a 'citation-based literature mapping tool,' which also helps in organising the collections of papers based on the researchers' interests. All the aforementioned applications are useful throughout the whole research process, starting from planning to writing and data analysis. A single researcher might take months to find and analyse data, whereas, with the help of AI, these tasks could be performed in a short time frame. AI can discover relationships that may not be immediately obvious to the human mind and can help researchers draw more penetrating and impactful conclusions. AI reduces human capacity to think, says research
It was only a matter of time, but it did come too soon. A study by MIT's Research Lab recently conducted a study on 54 individuals who were between 18 and 39 years old. Each was asked to write a couple of essays in the style of the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), a common exam in the United States. Some randomly selected subjects were asked to write without access to the Internet, others using only the Google search engine, and the rest using OpenAI's ChatGPT. The researchers used EEG to record brain activity across 32 regions of the brain. Unsurprisingly, they found that those who were using GhatGPT got lazier as the study went on, using cut-and-paste tactics more often. Those who had limited access to the Internet were more engaged with the essay, thought about it more, deliberated on the ideas and even took ownership of the arguments presented. Those who used ChatGPT almost stopped caring for the ideas they were generating by the end of the study. When asked to re-write their essay, this group did not remember most of the ideas which they had previously used. This is a preliminary study with few participants but the head researcher, Nataliya Kosmyna, went ahead to share the findings. According to her, 'Developing brains are at their highest risk'. She meant that the younger the learners are, the more dangerous the implications of continuous use of Artificial Intelligence. The findings seem intuitive after all. Continuously using generative AI to do all our tasks, from answering all our queries on trivia to planning out budgeted holidays, can only make us think less. It is not only that we are resorting to the easiest option but that these choices are making our capacity to make any choice seem redundant. This could be the end of critical thinking as we know it. Arguments against this scenario have already filled the research space. The most common argument is that everything depends on how we use AI – whether is it used as a supplement to just help with our work but not replace it, or even show us alternatives from which we could choose. But there are also other concerns. Beyond making us 'lazier', using generative AI has already indicated other social implications. For one, it is making people lonelier. There is very little use for companionship if the screen is fulfilling most of our needs, especially for youngsters who are already comfortable growing up with screens of different sizes. So common is the use of AI for personal needs that it is also replacing counselling, whether academic or personal, for students. Although this may sound like a good option, as it makes counselling free and always available, it does not give advice on individual situations and priorities. Depending on AI for life decisions may take more time. We cannot wish AI away, but we can learn more about it and its judicious use.
