Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, successfully concluded a series of high-level engagements in London, reinforcing Nigeria's commitment to fostering trade and investment partnerships with the UK. The visit, anchored around the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit held on 7-8 April, provided a vital platform to showcase Nigeria's strategic economic priorities and attract investment into key sectors.
During her visit, Dr. Oduwole participated in two exclusive events hosted by Invest Africa, engaging with top-tier stakeholders, business leaders, and investors. These engagements underscored Nigeria's dedication to economic diversification, investment mobilisation, and strengthening the London-Lagos investment corridor.
On 8 April, the Minister delivered a keynote address at an Invest Africa-hosted roundtable, where she outlined Nigeria's investment potential and strategic trade policies. The discussion focused on boosting non-oil sectors, promoting ease of doing business, and enhancing UK-Nigeria commercial ties. Senior executives from the UK business and investor community engaged directly with the Minister, fostering dialogue on new investment opportunities and partnerships that will contribute to Nigeria's long-term development goals.
Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, stated: 'Nigeria is open for business, and we are committed to creating an environment that fosters investment, innovation, and economic growth. Our engagements in London demonstrate our dedication to strengthening trade ties, supporting local and foreign investors, and ensuring that Nigeria remains a prime investment destination. The opportunities in Nigeria, particularly in non-oil sectors, are immense, and we invite investors to be part of this journey towards sustainable development.'
Additionally, the Minister participated in an exclusive event co-hosted by Invest Africa in partnership with Lagos Free Zone (LFZ). This strategic engagement positioned LFZ as a premier investment hub within Nigeria's manufacturing sector, showcasing its potential to attract global investors and support the country's industrialisation agenda. The event featured a presentation by Lagos Free Zone MD&CEO, Adesuwa Ladoja, and a dynamic panel discussion exploring Nigeria's industrial landscape and how LFZ can support UK businesses keen on exploring pathways for sustainable growth in Nigeria.
Karen Taylor, Chair of Invest Africa, commented: 'Invest Africa is proud to facilitate meaningful engagement between Nigerian leaders and the UK business community. The Minister's participation in our events underscores Nigeria's strategic importance as a trade and investment partner. We look forward to continuing to support initiatives that drive economic collaboration and unlock new business opportunities.'
Adesuwa Ladoja, MD&CEO of Lagos Free Zone, remarked: 'The Lagos Free Zone represents a game-changer for Nigeria's manufacturing and industrial sectors, offering world-class infrastructure and seamless business operations. This event provided a crucial platform to showcase how strategic investments in LFZ can unlock deeper penetration into the Nigerian market for UK businesses and drive Nigeria's industrialisation. We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to welcoming global investors.'
Dr. Oduwole's engagements in London aligned with Nigeria's four key strategic pillars: investment mobilisation, trade revenue growth, economic diversification, and strategic communications. Through these discussions, the Minister reinforced Nigeria's proactive approach to fostering international trade relations, unlocking new business opportunities, and strengthening economic ties between Nigeria and the UK.
As Nigeria continues its journey toward sustainable economic transformation, the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment remains committed to advancing strategic partnerships and positioning Nigeria as a top-tier investment destination on the global stage.

Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Discusses Future Economic, Trade, and Investment Relations with British Minister for International Development Between The Two Countries

H.E. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, held a discussion session with Baroness Jenny Chapman, UK Minister of State for International Development, during the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting in South Africa. The meetings witnessed extensive discussions on the future of economic, trade, and investment relations between the two countries in light of their close partnership, as well as joint coordination in international forums to advance efforts to restructure the global financial system and review proposed efforts to restructure the working mechanisms of the United Nations, as well as discussing the outcomes of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development in Seville. During the meeting, both sides expressed their anticipation of the upcoming visit to Cairo announced by the UK Prime Minister's Office, which will represent a qualitative shift in bilateral Egyptian-British relations, elevating them to a strategic partnership level, in addition to its role in opening up avenues for cooperation across various levels between the two sides. It is also an extension of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union, which was announced in 2024. During the meeting, the two ministers agreed on the need to activate the recommendations issued by various international forums to restructure the global financial system, ensuring a more efficient and fair financial architecture, especially for developing countries, achieving greater transparency in financing mechanisms, and expanding concessional financing. They also discussed proposals for restructuring the working mechanisms of the United Nations system to make it more influential in the global economy, emphasizing the need to adopt comprehensive coordination and follow-up mechanisms to ensure sustainability and enhance national participation in UN efforts. The meeting witnessed extensive discussions on various aspects of the partnership between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United Kingdom, particularly in terms of trade exchange, British investments in Egypt, economic relations, and development cooperation. H.E. Dr. Al-Mashat reaffirmed Egypt's keenness to develop these relations and build on the pioneering results achieved over the past years, particularly in food security, support for start-ups, and small and medium enterprises. The two sides reviewed frameworks for bilateral cooperation in the field of development finance, the UK's contribution to financing development policies through the World Bank, as well as the role of UK Export Finance (UKEF) which supports project financing in Egypt, and the financing mechanisms provided by British International Investment (BII), which considers Egypt one of its priority markets. In this context, the Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation reviewed preparations for launching the 'National Narrative for Economic Development,' which is an executive program to promote structural transformation in the Egyptian economy toward tradable sectors, encourage foreign direct investment, industrial development, and support labor market and employment. H.E. noted that since March 2024, the government has implemented economic and structural reforms that have contributed to macroeconomic stability and created a favorable investment climate and business environment. The two sides also discussed close cooperation within the framework of the Egyptian National Platform for Green Projects, the 'NWFE' program, which focuses on linking water, food, and energy nexus, particularly through BII and its financing to support energy and green hydrogen projects. In addition to the UK's role in providing support and assistance to global climate funds, represented by the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Additionally, the meeting highlighted the launch of the 'Green Growth: Egypt–UK' campaign in June 2025, which will continue until COP30 Climate Conference to accelerate green economy partnerships. Given that the UK is one of the largest investors in Egypt in sectors in the energy, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods, and in light of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024 between the Egyptian General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) and UKEF to strengthen investment relations, the two ministers explored the significant role of the Egyptian-British Business Association (BEBA) and the Egyptian-British Chamber of Commerce (EBCC) in connecting companies, facilitating investment, and enhancing trade exchange between the two countries. For her part, the British Minister emphasized the diverse historical relations between the two countries, which share close ties and cooperation across various fields. H.E. also praised Egypt's significant efforts in addressing the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians in Gaza and the role of the Egyptian leadership in delivering humanitarian aid to the Strip, affirming her country's full support for these efforts. She expressed her hope for reaching an immediate and sustainable ceasefire that would allow safe and regular delivery of aid. London hosts the Gulf-British Arbitration Forum with participation of prominent international experts

Dr. Kamal Al-Hamad, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council Commercial Arbitration Centre (GCCCAC), inaugurated the Gulf-British Arbitration Forum held at the Arab-British Chamber of Commerce in the UK capital, London. The forum attracted significant attention, with over 100 distinguished leaders from the Gulf, Arab countries, and the United Kingdom, alongside a number of international legal, judicial, and commercial arbitration experts. The forum addressed several key topics, most notably international commercial arbitration, and introduced the upcoming Second Gulf Law and Arbitration Week, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Bahrain in January next year. The event served as a platform for knowledge exchange and the strengthening of legal cooperation among relevant institutions. Mr. Abdullah Al-Omair, Director General of International Agreements at the Saudi Ministry of Investment, delivered a keynote presentation highlighting the legal environment for investment in Saudi Arabia in light of the Ministry's strategies and Vision 2030. The audience praised the Kingdom's achievements in attracting foreign investment and fostering investor confidence. A delegation from the Supreme Judiciary Council of Qatar also participated, presenting the status of commercial courts and investment-related judicial structures in Qatar, with a particular focus on initiatives supporting and empowering women in the legal sector as part of the country's judicial system. On the sidelines of the forum, Dr. Kamal Al-Hamad held a series of coordination meetings with several UK arbitration institutions, accompanied by members of the GCCCAC Advisory Committee. These meetings included discussions on exchanging rosters of arbitrators and experts, as well as exploring cooperation mechanisms for training and certifying legal arbitrators and specialists. These visits are part of a broader series of international Gulf forums organized by the GCCCAC, aimed at enhancing engagement and experience exchange with leading legal and arbitration bodies worldwide. The series began in the United States in May, followed by the UK forum, and will continue in Paris this September, where meetings are scheduled with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Sorbonne University, under the patronage of the Arab-French Chamber of Commerce. The forum concluded with a special tribute to Queen Mary University of London, one of the UK's prestigious academic institutions. Dr. Peter Cameron, Professor of Law at the university, delivered a speech discussing specialized academic programs in legal training and the importance of preparing legal professionals to meet the evolving demands of international arbitration. It is worth noting that the Gulf Cooperation Council Commercial Arbitration Centre is an international regional arbitration body with legal personality, established by a resolution of the GCC heads of state during the 14th GCC Summit in Riyadh in 1993. The centre's operational framework was approved by all GCC Council of Ministers, with the aim of promoting arbitration as an independent system for resolving commercial and investment disputes. The Centre also works to train and certify arbitrators, experts, and case managers across various specialties through high-quality accreditation programs, thereby fostering a culture of justice and fairness in arbitration across the Gulf region.

West African advisers to boost agribusiness e-commerce

Small agribusinesses in Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire are eager to tap into regional markets, but limited digital skills and poor access to online platforms hold them back. Without targeted support, these businesses struggle to embrace e-commerce and expand beyond their local base. To close this gap, the International Trade Centre trained national advisors and support institutions to help agribusinesses go digital and sell across borders. Many small agribusinesses in West Africa face barriers to reaching broader markets due to poor digital skills, low online visibility, and little access to e-commerce. These challenges hold back their potential to scale and engage in regional trade. To help close this gap, the International Trade Centre (ITC), under its ECOWAS Agricultural Trade (EAT) programme, organized a regional training of trainers in April in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. The five-day workshop brought together six newly appointed e-commerce advisors (three from each country) and eight representatives from business support organizations in Nigeria and Côte d'Ivoire. They received the tools and knowledge to support 30 agribusinesses—15 in each country—to trade online across the region. The participating advisors were selected for their potential to act as national champions for e-commerce capacity building. They were joined by eight representatives from four partner business support organizations: the National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Côte d'Ivoire (CCI-CI) and the National Chamber of Agriculture of Côte d'Ivoire (CNA-CI). This diverse mix fostered strong cross-border peer learning and established the foundation for sustained collaboration between national institutions. 'In my view, agro-processors will need this hands-on training to increase their visibility," said Ibrahima Bamba, Agricultural Advisor at the National Chamber of Agriculture of Côte d'Ivoire. Anuoluwapo Odubanjo, e-commerce Advisor for Nigeria added: 'Thanks to this training, I'm ready to support agribusinesses in developing tailored e-commerce strategies—from choosing the right platforms to managing online sales—so they can scale up their operations." The training covered digital marketing, online payment systems, shipping logistics, and customer service. Using interactive tools such as real-life case studies and peer learning, the sessions fostered collaboration and built confidence among participants. The impact is evident: 11 participants reported a significant improvement in their skills, and many left with action plans to support small businesses in their communities. From training rural entrepreneurs to helping businesses list on e-commerce platforms, the new advisors are ready to make a tangible impact. Since its launch in 2018, the programme has worked to bridge digital gaps and promote trade-ready agribusinesses in West Africa. By investing in local expertise, ITC's EAT programme is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive and digitally connected agricultural economy in West Africa.
