DICT to probe alleged ‘overstaying' 400 Chinese working for DITO
DICT spokesperson Assistant Secretary Renato 'Aboy' Paraiso admitted that the agency has 'no visibility on that particular issue' until columnist Ramon Tulfo posted on Facebook his claim that DITO Tel was allegedly employing Chinese nationals who 'have over-extended their tourist visas.'
'Now that we have [knowledge] we will investigate… The DICT-CICC (Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center) will formally do an investigation,' Paraiso said.
The post said the 400 allegedly 'overstaying' Chinese might be endangering our national security as they work for a telecom company.'
Paraiso said the DICT would reach out to the Bureau of Immigration 'because the first allegation is the over[staying] visas.'
'[But] since this is a telco that we are talking about, our attached agency which is the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) would also be an active partner in this investigation,' he said.
The DICT official said the investigation, to be led by CICC and NTC, 'would investigate as far as our ICT infrastructure and systems are being used illegally by overstaying foreigners.'
GMA News Online reached out to DITO Tel through its Viber media group.
In response, the telco's media communications team said, 'discussing internally and we will get back to you.'
DITO Tel is 60% owned by DITO CME Holdings Corp., a unit of Davao-based businessman Dennis Uy's conglomerate Udenna Group, while the remaining 40% is owned by state-owned China Telecommunications Corp.
DITO Tel, dubbed as the 'third telco' or new major player in the country's telecommunications space to disrupt the so-called duopoly of Globe and PLDT-Smart, has grown its subscriber base to 14 million as of end 2024 since its commercial launch in March 2021. –NB, GMA Integrated News

EGov PH app to add new features
The government's flagship super app, eGov PH, is set to have new features to further boost ease of access to bureaucratic services. This was announced by President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. in his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA), according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT). In particular, the eGov PH app will soon have additional features such as application and renewal of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearances, Beep Card integration for Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) commuters, and access to the Bureau of Internal Revenue's (BIR) electronic Taxpayer Identification Number (eTIN) system. The eGov app was developed to eliminate long-standing inefficiencies in public service—such as long lines, fixers, and repeat visits to multiple agencies—by delivering key government services through a single digital platform. Currently, the app allows users to renew driver's licenses, access PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG, and GSIS services, process immigration and customs documents for overseas Filipino workers, retrieve digital copies of the PhilSys National ID, create biodata for job applications and many more. The app also provides official government news and advisories to help Filipinos stay informed and avoid misinformation. Marcos has described the flagship app as a central pillar of his administration's efforts to bring government services closer to the people via digital transformation. Launched in 2023, the eGov PH app has so far recorded over 14 million registered users and facilitated over 200 million digital transactions nationwide. In his SONA, the President cited the app's growing global recognition, citing its receipt of the United Nations E-Government Award from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the 2025 GovMedia Digital Transformation of Year and E-Governance Project of the Year awards in Singapore—accolades that he said reinforce the Philippines' emergence as a regional leader in digital public service innovation. — RF, GMA Integrated News

AFP: 23 Chinese ships monitored in WPS amid bad weather

JUN VENERACION/GMA Int The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said that 23 Chinese vessels were monitored in key areas of the West Philippine Sea (WPS) last week amid the bad weather. Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, AFP spokesperson for the WPS, said a total of seven Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) and seven People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy ships were sighted in Bajo de Masinloc between July 21 and 27. Additional deployments included four CCG and two PLA Navy vessels in Ayungin Shoal, one PLA Navy ship in Sabina Shoal, and one CCG and one PLA Navy ship near Pag-asa Island. No aggressive acts by Chinese forces were recorded during the latest monitoring period, according to Trinidad. However, he stressed that the continued presence of foreign ships within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) remains a "concern." 'We will keep performing our mandate of securing our national territory and protecting our sovereignty and sovereign rights,' said Trinidad. 'The Department of National Defense has been very clear—we will be resistant and unwavering against the aggressive actions of the Chinese Communist Party. Your Armed Forces are prepared to sacrifice, pay even the ultimate sacrifice in furtherance of this mandate.' 'Steadfast' AFP officials said that under the Marcos administration, the defense sector has intensified both domestic preparedness and regional engagement with allies.
