Kevin Lerena has seldom tasted defeat in his boxing career, but in July 'Two Guns' was left bitterly disappointed after his loss to Lawrence Okolie for the WBC Silver Heavyweight title at a packed Wembley Stadium in London.
At 33, the loss may limit Lerena's future and immediate prospects.
With 35 pro fights to his name, Lerena has come away victorious in 31 of those bouts.
The worrying stat for Lerena though, is that three of his four losses have come in his last six fights.

Lerena Reflects on Performance and Embraces Future Opportunities
'It didn't go my way, it wasn't my best performance, but it is what it is. At the end of the day I don't mope about my losses, I move forward and at the end of the day I went out there representing my country,' Lerena told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview.
'The opportunity will come around full 360 again and when it presents itself, we'll have another go. You can't win them all, and sometimes you look good, sometimes you don't look so good, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.'
Lerena's Strategic Approach
Lerena's previous fight was against Ukrainian Serhiy Radchenko in May in a WBC Bridgerweight bout. It was a clear mismatch as Lerena floored his opponent more than once in a fight which lasted just seconds into the third round before Radchenko's camp threw in the towel.
It's not been revealed what Lerena would have earned in that headline fight at 'The Reckoning' at home in Pretoria, but it would likely have not been close to the amount he received for the Okolie fight or his high-profile loss to Daniel Dubois at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in 2022.
Without admitting how much the loss will have hindered his career path in what should already be the twilight of his career, Lerena acknowledged how he will have to be careful about who he fights next, and when.
'That's so important, you've got to be smart when the fights are coming up, to take the right fight, but I'm at the point in my career now, it's about making the most monetary and official gains as well as the best fight on the biggest stages," Lerena told SportsBoom.co.za.
'That's the direction we're heading in.'

Marchand, McIntosh rampant as US end turbulent worlds with record

SINGAPORE - Leon Marchand and Summer McIntosh sealed their golden swimming world championships with rampant victories on Sunday's final day of competition as the United States signed off with a relay record. Eight days of competition in Singapore wrapped up in style with French superstar Marchand and 18-year-old Canadian sensation McIntosh underlining their dominance. Marchand, who won four golds and was the face of his home Paris Olympics a year ago, added the 400m individual medley crown to his 200m medley title this week. The 23-year-old arrived in Singapore with a lighter programme in an effort to smash Ryan Lochte's 2011 200m IM world record -- and he did just that. Marchand on Sunday cruised to victory in the 400IM, powering to the wall in 4min 04.73sec, more than three seconds ahead of Japan's Tomoyuki Matsushita (4:08.32), with Russian Ilia Borodin (4:09.16) third. AFP | François-Xavier MARIT Not to be outdone, McIntosh was similarly emphatic in winning the women's 400IM for her fourth gold in Singapore, to go with triumphs in the 200m medley, 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle. The world record holder led from start to finish to romp to victory in a championships-record 4:25.78, with Australia's Jenna Forrester and Japan's Mio Narita sharing silver (4:33.26). McIntosh's only defeat of the championships came on Saturday when she finished third in the 800m freestyle, with the American Katie Ledecky dominating that event once more to underline her enduring quality aged 28. The US team were battling acute gastroenteritis all week and faced criticism from Olympic greats Michael Phelps and Lochte. AFP | Manan VATSYAYANA But they silenced the doubters by breaking their own world record in winning the women's 4x100m medley relay. The Americans were victorious in 3:49.34, beating their previous record of 3:49.63 from Paris a year ago. They also set a mixed 4x100m freestyle world record on Saturday. The US ended a turbulent week top of the pile with nine golds, ahead of Australia with eight and France and Canada on four -- all by McIntosh. - Dream gold - Australia's Meg Harris beamed from ear to ear after joining compatriot Cam McEvoy as a 50m freestyle champion. A day after McEvoy won the men's sprint, Paris Olympics silver medallist Harris powered home in 24.02sec to beat Chinese pair Wu Qingfeng (24.26) and Cheng Yujie (24.28). Harris said becoming an individual world champion was "the dream I have been dreaming of the whole time". "This is why I swim," said the 23-year-old. Tunisia's Ahmed Jaouadi added the 1,500m freestyle world title to his 800m crown, with two-time Olympic champion Bobby Finke only third. Jaouadi won a thriller to grab gold in 14min 34.41sec, ahead of Germany's Sven Schwarz (14:35.69) and the American world record holder Finke (14:36.60). There was a Russian victory in the men's 50m backstroke, with world record holder Kliment Kolesnikov dominating for gold in a championships-record 23.68sec. Fellow Russian Pavel Samusenko and South Africa's Pieter Coetze shared silver, 0.49sec behind. AFP | François-Xavier MARIT Russian swimmers are competing as neutrals because of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte sealed a career fourth women's 50m breaststroke world crown. Siraj strikes for India as England's Brook rides his luck in Oval thriller

LONDON - Mohammed Siraj struck again for India before England's Harry Brook counter-attacked in style as a dramatic fifth and deciding Test at the Oval remained in the balance on Sunday. England were 164-3 at lunch on the fourth day, still needing a further 210 runs to reach a huge victory target of 374 that would give them a 3-1 series win. Joe Root, the world's top-ranked Test batsman, was 23 not out, with Yorkshire teammate Brook riding his luck during an unbeaten 38 featuring four fours and two sixes. Brook struck 27 runs in the space of eight balls, having come in with England 106-3 after Siraj had stand-in England captain Ollie Pope lbw for 27. AFP | HENRY NICHOLLS The talented Brook charged down the pitch to loft Akash Deep for an extraordinary six over cover despite heavy cloud cover in London favouring India's quicks. But he almost holed out to fine leg off Prasidh Krishna only for Siraj, right back on the boundary, unable to stop himself taking a pace backwards when completing the catch. By stepping onto the rope, Siraj transformed a dismissal into another six. England resumed on 50-1 after Siraj yorked Zak Crawley with the last ball of Saturday's play. Ben Duckett was 34 not out and Pope, leading England in place of the injured Ben Stokes, yet to face. Left-hander Duckett was repeatedly beaten by fast bowler Siraj, who has appeared in every match of a gruelling series. He continued to fend outside off stump and it was no surprise when he fell for 54 after edging an intended drive off Krishna to second slip, with KL Rahul holding a sharp catch to leave England 82-2. But Pope hit three fours in one Krishna over with an on-drive followed by a clip through midwicket and a forceful pull. Siraj, however, had Pope plumb lbw for 27 with a ball that kept a touch low and nipped back. Siraj's 20th wicket of the series made him the leading bowler on either side. India posted 396 in their second innings on Saturday. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a sparkling 118 and Washington Sundar smashed a quickfire 53 late in the day. History is against the hosts as no side have made more to win in the fourth innings of a Test at the Oval than England's 263 in a one-wicket victory over Australia in 1902. But England chased down 371 for a five-wicket win in the opener at Headingley. By Julian Guyer

Ferrari boss backs ‘useless' Hamilton

Sir Lewis Hamilton has declared himself 'useless' after failing to reach Q3 in Hungary. The Briton's torrid transition to Ferrari was compounded by the fact his teammate Charles Leclerc put the same vehicle on pole position. The seven-time world champion then proceeded to have a full-on tantrum in the F1 media pen. 'The team, they have no problem – they've seen the car is on pole. So, they probably need to change the driver,' said Hamilton. Ferrari's Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc claimed his first pole position in Budapest and the 27th of his career. Image: Attila KISBENEDEK/AFP The 40-year-old Briton's comments have reignited speculation about possible retirement, just months after switching from Mercedes. 'That's a tendency. It happens very, very quickly. I personally experienced the same thing in my own career,' said former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher. But Schumacher believes Leclerc's current form and the team's technical focus around him may be compounding Hamilton's difficulties. 'If things continue like this, Ferrari will have to choose, because he (Hamilton) is starting to doubt himself more and more,' Schumacher said. The arrival of Lewis Hamilton at Maranello made headlines around the world but his speed on track has failed to materialise. Image: Ferrari Press Hamilton said just last week that he didn't want to repeat the fate of Alonso or Vettel at Ferrari (never winning a title again). However, he may now be confronting that very same scenario and more or less asking team bosses to fire him. 'His words after qualifying are almost a sign of surrender. Especially at a track he loves, and with his teammate on pole,' said Former Ferrari driver Ivan Capelli. However, Ferrari team boss, Frederic Vasseur, defended Hamilton's performance. 'The window is tight, and the car can't cope with his driving style. We underestimated Lewis' challenges at the start of the season,' he said. Meanwhile, Vasseur was also thankful for Ferrari renewing his own contract. 'You don't win overnight. It takes years. Ferrari hasn't won a constructors' title since 2008 and we want to win again. We've made progress, but we need time to put everything together. 2026 will be a great opportunity,' concluded Vasseur – with GMM Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
