Sabres avoid arbitration by signing defenseman Connor Timmins to 2-year, $4.4 million contract
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres avoided a salary arbitration hearing with Conor Timmins by signing the newly acquired defenseman to a two-year, $4.4 million contract on Sunday. The 26-year-old Timmins was a restricted free agent and acquired with defenseman Isaac Beliveau in a trade that sent blue-liner Connor Clifton to the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 28. The Sabres are Timmins' fifth team in six NHL seasons since the 2017 second-round draft pick broke into the league with Colorado in 2019-20. He finished last season with a career-high three goals and 15 points in 68 games split between Pittsburgh and Toronto. Overall, he has six goals and 46 points in 159 games. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor returns to practice as Chiefs put pads on for first time in training camp
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs right tackle Jawaan Taylor made his training camp debut after missing their first four practices because of a knee injury, and he was right in the mix with the starters Sunday as they put on pads for the first time. Backup tight end Tre Watson, who also had been out with a groin injury, passed his physical and joined Taylor on the field. Taylor has started all 33 regular-season games he has played for Kansas City over the past two seasons. But his blocking metrics coupled with a propensity for penalties mean his job is far from secure. The Chiefs signed backup 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal and used their first-round draft pick on Ohio State standout Josh Simmons. After the first week of camp, Simmons appears to have the inside track on the left tackle job, which was a problem position for the Chiefs all of last season. So when Taylor returned, it was in a rotation with Moore for first-team snaps on Sunday. 'We're getting back in the swing. He hasn't done anything," Chiefs coach Andy Reid said of Taylor, who showed up on the injury report with knee trouble much of last season and had offseason surgery. 'But all three are kind of competing there.' Reid said he was pleased with the way Simmons looked in his first padded practice. There was some question about whether he would even be ready for camp after tearing his patellar tendon in a game with the Buckeyes last season. 'He did some good things. I wasn't focusing on him the whole time, but I thought he did some good things,' Reid said. 'He's a work in progress. He has to keep working. Young guy.' Meanwhile, Reid said cornerback Kristian Fulton had a procedure to 'clean out' his knee in the spring, which is why he remains on the physically unable to perform list. The Chiefs gave him a two-year, $20 million deal in March. With Grant Holmes placed on 15-day IL, all 5 Braves opening day starters are out with injuries
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Grant Holmes on the 15-day injured list on Sunday, meaning all five of the club's starters on Opening Day are on the injured list. Holmes has elbow inflammation and was replaced on the active roster by Daysbel Hernández, recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett. Holmes pitched four innings Saturday in the Braves' 6-5 loss to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings. Hernández had been optioned to Gwinnett on July 13. The Braves' other Opening Day starters are all on the 60-day list. It began during the season's first week with right-hander Reynaldo López (placed on the list on March 29 with shoulder inflammation following one start, resulting in surgery), right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver (May 29, strained elbow, resulting in Tommy John surgery), left-hander Chris Sale (June 21, fractured rib cage diving to field a grounder in the ninth inning of a five-hit shutout of the New York Mets shortly after being selected to his ninth All-Star team) and right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach (July 2, fractured elbow).
